    Default Naming my baby Nagisa?

Hey guys, We're a north american couple thinking about baby names, and if it's a girl, I've always had my heart set on calling her Nagisa. Nagisa from the anime Clannad has always been my favourite fictional character, as she is strong, beautiful, and reminds me of the beauty of the world. We would love to name our baby after her, and was wondering what you guys thought? I have my heart set on this name, but do you think it's too strange in a north american culture? Thanks for your opinions

I don't think it would be strange, just different. I've seen very weird names and I think Nagisa sounds nice.

To your culture, it would be strange to give your child a foreign name. However, it would give that child uniqueness which the other children won't particularly have. Plus, we live in a strange world.

Your child might be pissed sometime down the line after they look up their name and find out that you named them after a cartoon character.

It's like if I named my kid Aang or Buttercup. Sure it holds sentimental value for me, but basically no value at all to anyone else outside of a very specific set of people in your age group.

In any case, there's nothing wrong with naming your child Nagisa but understand that it's pretty awkward to give a Japanese name to your american child. The worst thing to worry about is your kid getting backlash for weaboo association, but hardly anyone even knows the term so you can probably get away with this ultimately.

And when I say getting away with I mean dealing as little damage to your kid's social life as possible

What I will find funny is that the child will learn is not only an anime character when she googles it.

Other than that, I mostly agree with what this member says to an extend. I would never name my child after a fictional character at all.

But I know a white guy named Pedro and he has no Hispanic in it as I have a Colombian friend named Harold and he has no white on him. So I don't see what's wrong with a white girl with a Japanese name. However, what I agree is what would come from it like you said.

i think it would be unique, not strange.
why would anyone want to name their child something normal, like "bob" (no offense to anyone named bob)
or D1ck, that's always a name i never understood. imo D1ck is the weird name, but nobody seemed to have a problem when our old VP was named it.

i say go with it if it's what you want.
imho....never let anyone elses opinion influence what you really want to do. if that's what you really want to name your kid, then do it......simple as that

Its not weird but it's just different. I don't suggest naming your child after a Japanese character knowing your child isn't Japanese by blood. Best if you'll go with something that would fit your child more and be a bit more appropriate if you get what I mean.
Personally, I wouldn't go with a Japanese name because obviously I'm not Japanese. Why would I do it? It's understandable if you or your spouse is Japanese, then fine by me. Go name your child that has a Japanese name like Nagisa. I could go with a Chinese name if I have a kid, but no. I'm Chinese but I wouldn't really use a Chinese name on my kid but its what I prefer. Just for now, maybe go with something that isn't too exotic as the name you want. Your daughter will be mistaken as a Japanese, soon you'll hear "But you're white!" when she's clearly not Japanese at all. :/

    I agree with Seung-li,
take the safe route and name her something
    more american-ish.

    On top of that,
anime has a bit of a bad rap in North America.
Alot of bullying happens to kids who express their
fondness of anime or are associated with anime in some form or fashion.
    (myself included)
So spare your child from future bullying.

(I'm sorry, but I can't help but think about Nagisa from the
Yandere no Onna no ko series.)

Eh, the few people in my college here in MA, who do express their fondness of anime aren't bullied. I'm not saying it's the norm here, but it certainly seems more well received, or nobody really gives a damn. No one has a problem with me expressing my fondness of anime. Must be because I'm Asian, and people are ignorant :P

And lizzy, consider what other members have said in this thread (about the whole bullying or awkward thing). However, it's up to you, and if you want to, go ahead and name your child Nagisa. My opinion is biased though, having watched Clannad and Clannad After Story, and loving them both. If I didn't already have two candidates for names picked out (if I ever have a daughter), I would probably put the name Nagisa on my considerations list.

Oh, Hi-deeki, imagine... your kind not eating raw fish! ^_^

It doesn't seem very wise to give a child a name of a different culture especially after a cartoon character.

It's as bad as naming a white child pedro or bonquisha-chanelle or something. Children with out there names are often bullied. And there may be a time you don't care for anime anymore but I certainly wouldn't recommend naming your child something from an anime on any terms it's not very bright nor creative. A middle name is passible but as a first name? No.

Nothing like explaining to your friends "I named her after this anime girl" I'd smack a friend if they ever explained to me this type of reason of naming their kid. To me it looks as if you have no consideration for anything outside of anime. And that it takes over your poor life so much that you actually NAME your own CHILD because it :/

    I think it's a beautiful name !
It's your child.. do what you think is best. I know a lot of people with names of different cultures, they are nice. Don't worry what other people think.. if you like the name Nagisa go for it ! It's not like it's a dumb name that people will tease her for, its cute. :3

You do realize that a lot of children were named after soap opera characters, right?

Are they at least American names going to american babies? Not as big of a deal when you name your kid... Tom after tom cruise as it would be naming your kid naruto from naruto.

Sure but at least those names are tolerable than something off a Japanese character when they're not Japanese or have any Japanese (or Asian) descent.

Funny to say, my fiance's mom named him after Captain Kirk but also it happens that my fiance's dad has that same name, too so now he has James as his name. :/ His middle name is Odin and his mom is a Thor fan, but it's coincidence that he has Norwegian/Scandinavian descent. It's nerdy but something kind of cool to use. But if it's for just otaku use, I don't think it's so original at all, especially when you have no drop of anything Asian in you.

It works better if they even have a bit of Japanese in them, then I think it's okay. Another example, my former teacher has a daughter Rumiko. Her previous husband named her that and he's Japanese. It surprised me because her daughter looks more like her mother than her father. With that, I can accept it better than a crazed otaku naming a child after an anime character and they're a different race (aside of being white).
