Been running about a week or so with my new build and have gone with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and so far I'm really digging it. And the install was easier than any windows install I've done. It just worked. Only a couple things I have found I can't do (or do easily atleast) that I might need windows for (netflix, and watching bluray), so may eventually install it dual boot style or perhaps run windows virtually on it. But for now I'm 100% Linux.

I like both Windows and Mac OSX a lot but I most used to using Windows so for this poll, i'd vote for Windows. I like how it looks and how I feel I have more control over it than OSX.

    Windows

Why?? because it's the first OS I've seen when I first used a computer....... but I'm not really sure if it is Windows 95 or 96.... But I do remember you need to type "win" in the DOS command first so that the Windows OS would start...... I only care back then is to play bomber man

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It's OK to use the abbreviation "PC" to refer to a certain kind of computer hardware, but please don't use it with the implication that the computer is running Microsoft Windows. If you install GNU/Linux on the same computer, it is still a PC.
The term "WC" has been suggested for a computer running Windows.

And Apple computers are also computers that are generally personal. It's another parlance issue, because of the market share of the Windows PC, people commonly shorthand it to PC; if the Linux PC became popular enough to break 10% market saturation, which even all distros combined haven't broken, then common parlance will welcome the distinction between PCs running a Windows distribution and those running a Linux, sorry, NT/Windows and GNU/Linux, OS.

So, just to complete my thought, promoting the learning via experience of non-commonly-used-by-consumer OSes would be far more conductive than simply nitpicking over parlance and semantics.

Anyways, the three common personal computing OSes have advantages and disadvantages. Windows still has the 80% market share, so there's a lot of third party support. OSX is nice to use, but annoying in some advanced cases. The *nix distros have the flexibility I do like (there is something endearing about just being able to drop to terminal and fix stuff) but with the limited market share, poor marketing, and existence of Richard Stallman, third party (consumer) support is bad. That said, the fact that you can literally build a distro from kernel up if you so desire is a powerful thing, and I'm a sucker for customization.

Except for those specialized distributions- often embedded- that use another set of utilities outside of those from the GNU project. BusyBox comes to mind immediately. Heck, some general purpose systems use that, too, and some use both BusyBox and a selection of the GNU utils. (If you're going to be pedantic, then so shall I.)
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
We could also play the whole "But I wanna be the first author on the paper!" game, too, and point out that the GNU utilities are nigh useless as functional code without a suitable kernel, which I'll remind you the GNU project still hasn't gotten going nicely. By that reasoning, the GNU utilities are not an operating system unto themselves, but rather other free components of a a fully functioning Linux system, made useful by that handy little kernel from Mr. Torvalds and collaborators.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
Nope. Yes, GNU deserves some credit, but to call it a GNU system is gross oversimplification, as would be to call it only a Linux system. Again, if you're going to be pedantic, then your careful language and maxims must be applied, assessed and tended to universally.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Yes, just like the transmission in an auto isn't the entire car itself. I will point out, however, that this does not make the system as a whole a "GNU operating system," anymore than it might make a car a "Michelin vehicle."
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run.
It makes all else possible, at least in operation. Development can be a bit more of a sticky subject, I admit.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.
Nothing special; the same is true of the GNU utils without a kernel.
Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux.
Or, Linux with GNU added. Neither one enjoys supremacy over the other, my very tenacious friend.
All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Again, most, not all. And why are you and RMS (unless you've graced us with your beard, mathematical prowess and admirable philosophies yourself, sir) so hung up on the order of the terms, e.g. the squabbling, juvenile "first author" spat I referenced above?

Well, PC could mean personal computer, or it could refer to the IBM PC and compatible systems, which in this era would boil down mainly to x86 instruction set support. In that case, those Macs that use/used PPC architecture might not be classed as (IBM)PC's. The issue of the market share of free systems versus the user base (they're not necessarily the same thing being measured there) is a sticky subject, best suited to its own discussion, but your assumption of a >10% user base (I assume that's what you meant) could be debated. You are right about one thing, though: Like it or not, our language is determined by usage, not by denotation. That frustrates me regularly, but there's no denying the normative definitions and revisions English experiences.
So, just to complete my thought, promoting the learning via experience of non-commonly-used-by-consumer OSes would be far more conductive than simply nitpicking over parlance and semantics.
Personally, I'd start with promotion of open/free standards and file formats, as that has more immediate interoperability problems in addition to the philosophies of freedom and user control espoused by the likes of the FSF and the GNU project, and would make an eventual (or immediate- aim high, but be contented with small steps in implementation) migration to free software that much simpler. Open standards in common use would also take away one bastion of proprietary vendors' lock-in tactics as a bonus. But, yeah, semantics are annoying, but even more so when applied with a clear bias regarding the importance of this part or that contribution.
    ...Richard Stallman...
Yeah, his almost pathological insistence on particular linguistics is a bother, but the man really is and has been a tremendously important free software figure, and he's quite articulate and thorough in his philosophies. I just wish he weren't so worried about listing GNU first. If it were equally acceptable to him and his groupies to say "Linux/GNU" or something similar, I'd still call him pedantic, but then he'd be fair in his pedantry at least.

Capitalism has little to do with it, unless there are unspoken assumptions at work in the formulation of your opinion. As a note, I am more or less libertarian in my philosophies, and wholly support free markets and private property rights, but care must be taken not to confuse this with capitalism, nor to assume that ideas ought to be considered property given their unique traits.

Anyway, I kind of hope you do make another topic. I may or may not agree with your stance on it (I need more details first), but I'd enjoy the discussion. Would you kindly send me a PM or something if you do that? Thanks!

Eh, it's the weekend, I might do it. Honestly, I'd have to do some more research before any serious discussion on the matter; while I know my core beliefs and my core issues with the man, a (serious, non-bunny related) discussion kinda needs to be researched beforehand.

It wouldn't change my belief that no RMS, or at least a more diplomatic RMS would be a good thing for the non-commercial, non-charity computer community.

Edit: That said, at this point, I disagree with you opinion on the capitalism issue.

EditEdit: Also, just as a side note, patents/copyrights/copylefts on conceptual ideas are indeed not a good thing at all.

EditEditEdit: Also, perhaps capitalism is the wrong word; to be succinct about my opinion, I feel that RMS' actions have had an overall negative impact on the industry.

Editx4: This isn't to say that I necessarily have the same opinions on the FSF. (I have serious issue with the GNU-GPL, and the FSF has a bit too much of the holier-than-thou air to them though.)

Editx5: I'll start researching for the thread...

While I use Windows for gaming & certain applications, I genuinely prefer Linux (even taking my adoration for gaming into consideration); mostly Slackware, BackTrack & Mint (for my desktop-replacing laptop [stock G73Sw]).

I haven't actually used OSX that much, so I may neither critique nor praise it.

Windows 7 at the moment. It's stable, fast, and simple. I think I appreciate it more since I switched back from Windows 8. The horror.

For me it depends what i need to use the computer for.

Leisure time use my iMac is my favorite. Simplicity at its finest.

If Im doing work/school related projects I will use my laptop (windows 7) because I know I can email docs to people and all is well. Powerpoint, Word and Excel are best for me on my laptop.
