[NEWS] Brazilian woman found alive in morgue by daughter

A BRAZILIAN woman in her 60s being treated in hospital for pneumonia was given up for dead by her attending physician - and sent to the morgue too soon, according to a report.

The doctor felt no vital signs, ran tests and pronounced Rosa Celestrino de Assis dead. She was taken to the morgue and spent at least two hours in a plastic body bag.
"I went to give my mum one last hug, and I could feel that she was breathing. I screamed out - my mum is alive! And they all looked at me like I was crazy," Rosangela Celestrino, the patient's daughter, told O Globo newspaper.


"Not only did I have to go collect my mum from a cold storage drawer at the morgue, but when I got there, I find her still breathing," Ms Celestrino went on.
Hospital officials said the patient had suffered two strokes and had been on assisted breathing. At 7:30pm local time, a nurse phoned the attending doctor because she did not show vital signs. The doctor confirmed her death and sent her to the morgue.



Hospital director Manoel Moreira Filho said the mistake was identified at about 10pm, and the patient was immediately intubated and put back on life support.

I have read about similar cases before. It's really scary that things like this actually happens. That it happens that people are freezing to death in the morgue or being bured alive. It's horrible! And it doesn't exactly makes me feel any better for thinking about that some time it maybe me... Cases like this just makes me feel so bad.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. If I were the physician of a 60 year old annoying hag with dozens of diseases and an annoying family who'd still want her alive, I'd declare her dead to get her off my back too.

If she had strokes, what were they doing? Checking her vitals on the right side only? People who suffer strokes will often happen to suffer right side weakness/paralysis on their right side, and that does cause vitals to be appear low to non-existant.

This reminds me of the story of a woman who woke in the morgue several times.


It's pretty scary, and I really hope this family will be OK. I think they really need some new guidelines in hospitals.

This honestly is scary, if someone is to thought to be dead, The should check vitals on both sides before dashing them off to the morgue. I have a fear of small spaces, so hopefully this never happens to me... I hope this woman and her family will be okay.
