Welp, kids want presents. If they get gifts, they can usually tolerate sitting on some creep's lap for a few seconds. Not to mention the police report would be generally easy to fill out. "Long white beard, spectacles, red suit and hat, jolly red cheeks, button nose, fat."
Whereas, clowns scare the living crap out of you, for nothing in return. And how would you report the dude? "A freak in make-up and funky clothes"? Those kinda people are everywhere now-a-days.
etc etc.
^
Yes, that's a dude.
I find Santa creepy, I mean he comes INSIDE your house while YOU'RE asleep, he could easily choose to kill you if he wanted to. O_O

Durr, the one time I sat in Santa's lap it wasn't so bad. Though he gave me a stuffed dog instead of a real one. Clowns are "creepier" because of Saw and IT and shiz like that. Santa isn't in horror movies, not that I know of anyway,
Clowns used to be well liked until movies like IT etc.
I for one still love "regular clowns" There's no need to bring out the sharp teeth etc.
Real clowns don't look like that. You'll fall in love with the Clowns at Cirque Du Soleil.

Because you can't fear things which isn't real :3
I don't really know... but maybe because of the jack in th box......the thing that comes out of it is a clown right?? and has a scary face too....but if santa would come out from the jack in the box... I find it cute...
Well, usually people don't fear things until they're given a threatening image about them. For example, clowns were used as 'the bad guys' in many movies, which gave the children who didn't understand that it's just a movie, an image that it represents a threat. I never feared spiders until I saw some really scary movies with them when I was really little. While Santa always appeared as the joyful, children-loving fat fella that sings "Ho ho ho" and gives everybody presents.
Also a reason for why clowns are scary is because of the make-up. A mask that hides true identity can inspire mistrust and fear sometimes.
No Mercy,
No Remorse.

I have never been afraid of clowns so I don't know. It's the same for me with dentists: I don't understand how people can be afraid of them. If it's the makeup and the red hair that people are afraid of, then why arn't people afraid of Ronald McDonald?
But I guess the issue lays in what @Kanjoudakai_Ira mentioned before. Clowns are shown as something scary in many movies, while santas always are good and nice to everyone. It must be something like that (?). Atleast it wouldn't surprise me it it were.

Waiting for
Christmas
Season four of Sherlock
The new Hobbit movie
Season five of Game of Thrones
New episodes of Downton Abbey
Go to a Mall and watch children standing in line forsitting on a perverts lapSanta. A significant number freak out. I'd conjecture that the number is similar to the number of children that are scared by clowns. Ergo, Clowns and Santi* are similarly scary.
Semi related story, my Mom/Sisters took my Shar-pei to sit on Santa's lap at Pet Smart. My dog punched Santa in the face. My dog is awesome.
*- Plural form of Santa, you heard it here first.

its all that make-up...............
Well, maybe clowns are scary because they're too colorful, have loud voices and try too hard to please people, kids especially.

In my view, there's something forced and over-the-top about the cheerful mannerisms of a clown, and it's that certain level of superficiality that makes them frightening in certain situations. I have heard somewhere that visually we instinctually associate laughter closely with displays of anger; in the facial muscles of higher apes the two are one and the same; bared teeth, upturned mouth, widened eyes, etc. For us, there is nothing more disturbing than a person who laughs when there is nothing to be laughed at; the very definition of a clown. Santa, at least, has a reason to be jolly.

Their both creepy they get to touch childern and they dont get in trouble for doing it !!!
But Santa is scary! He's a very real threat to us all!
I've maintained for years that Santa Klaus- what with his penchant for red and gift-giving- is a Communist Spy. That's the real reason NORAD tracks his sleigh each year at Christmas. (Don't believe Wikipedia when they claim it's fictitious. Lies! Dirty, Communist Lies!) Gotta be ready to scramble the fighters if he turns towards Washington.

Just wait until you see his Lovecraftian story-esque space/time altering abilities. That thing in the mirror is practice for moving a few feet closer in a new pose every time you blink until he gets close enough to devour your soul.
And that kids is why I never go to McDonald's without a decent supernatural weapon. Don't get me started on the foul harpy Birdie and that purple freak.
