Battle Legends – Episode 1 – A Cel-Shaded Short Film

Hello there, my name is Leo Tierney and I have recently completed a short CG film that may interest you all called Battle Legends!

'Battle Legends' is an original story of two young gamers who, against their will, are transported back to a fantastical time with orcs, paladins and dragons, only equipped with their brains and skills to help them survive. It then chronicles their tales as they attempt to get back home or stay.

In this short film I tried to recreate the original feel of 90s anime cartoons that some of us grew up with, but instead of using hand drawn images I created everything with 3d cel shades to give the illusion of 2d images.

I really, really enjoyed it. I like the style of graphics, something that's a little different from modern TV shows today. The voice acting was quite bad at many parts, but was pretty good at others. The plot seems to be decent so far. Are you designing this alone?

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'll try and have the voice acting improved for the next episodes And yes I am creating this alone, I sometimes bounce ideas off of other people, but the writing, modelling, animating, etc is done by me. Except the music which is created by Scott Morgan.

I figured you were designing it alone; so far you are doing a good job. How long have you been working on Battle Legends?

I first came up with the idea about 2 years ago and spent a year, on and off, working out ideas and coming up with rough scripts for the entire series. I then spent another year, in between my full time job, working on Episode One.

What did you use to create this? I like the story and the characters, except for the monsters because they rest of them looks alike

The programs I used to create this were Lightwave3D, Adobe After Effects, Adobe PremierePro and CubaseSX.

Sorry for the late reply, yes I'm sure its possible to create cel shaded work in Maya, you'll have to look into it.
