New Zealand bans weird kid names

Celebrities with a penchant for weird baby names (looking at you, David and Victoria Beckham) should avoid having kids in New Zealand.
The country’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages has been cracking down on parents who get too creative when naming their kids, Australia’s Herald Sun reports.
The list of weird names for kids that are banned by New Zealand’s names registrar has grown to include Lucifer, Duke, Messiah and 89.
Also not approved: Bishop, Baron, General, Judge, King, Knight and Mr., names that were all said to be too similar to titles.
The letters, C, D, I and T were also rejected as first names, the Herald Sun says.
As well, the agency has refused to allow names involving asterisks, commas, periods and other punctuation marks.
And three different sets of Kiwi parents wanted to name their children Lucifer, only to have the name choice nixed.
In 2008, New Zealand’s names registrar drew international attention when it approved such non-traditional names as Benson and Hedges for a set of twins, as well as the boys names of Violence and Number 16 Bus Shelter.
But New Zealand isn’t the only country to ban wacky names for kids, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports.
In Sweden, name choices are subject to a naming law. While Lego and Google have been approved as names for children, Superman, Metallica and Elvis, and the name Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, pronounced Albin, were not approved.
In 2007, a judge in the Dominican Republic submitted a proposal to ban names that are either confusing or gave no indication of gender, such as the names Qeurida Pina (Dear Pineapple) and Tonton Ruiz (Dummy Ruiz), according to the Globe and Mail.

This is stupid. Names are arbitrary and mutable. The ones in the wrong aren't the parents giving weird names, it's people who react to weird names. Tolerating weird names is the minimum effort required when it comes to upholding free speech.

This reminded me of this Japanese couple who tried to name their child "Devil" (Akuma), but only to be rejected because it was deemed "inappropriate".

I don't agree with this but I don't think the parents going and just naming their son "Puto" is acceptable either. (I am serious about this one, I met someone named "Puto" and he was Hispanic.)

It wouldn't be only bad in the kid's life (he or she mostly will get bullied) but it also looks professionally wrong.

Well how do you deem what is weird or not.. I want to name my kid kira.. Sure it's not a normal american sounding name but I thought it was pretty [even before getting into anime.. Stupid death note almost ruined it for me!.. I will never watch that show.]

I don't quite understand people and their name giving. Why can't they give a child an ordinary name like everybody else, it's not like it makers the kid special or anything. Speacking of which, this reminds me of an article I read a while back, about parents who gave their first son the name Winner and the second on Loser. Only later in life Loser was the one who graduated in college, got job, familly -everything that could make you happy, while Winner got himself in a mess with all the gambling and stuff.

So if parents don't have any good names to give it's better to have that law.

I don't think employers would take any person seriously if they put "Loser" in their job application as a name.

I mean, I rather name my son Bob or Paco rather than Arralaspalancas.

Yeah, this law is stupid. It infringes on a basic right. If I want to name my son Retard I should be able to. Would it cause trouble for the kid down the road? Probably. But it's still the right of the parent to think of things like that. Governments should not dictate how a parent raises a kid. Short of abuse the parents should be left alone. And a name is not abuse. Not to mention the names listed in the snippet are silly to ban. There's nothing wrong with a name like King. So it's close to a title. Not like anyone is going to think the kid is actually a king. And what's stopping a government from going from what you can name your kid to, say, what you can feed them and move on from there till they're controlling the child.

Well that's what I read. And yes it's a true story. But just like you said maybe nobody would trust him, but the man was sure to be put into labour to prove his worthy and has skill.

No it's not. But then kids will find anything to bully another kid about. Even with an acceptable name like Doug. Should we ban the name Doug since a kid can get picked on for it?

Yes, which is what I said. And a kid could still think up names to call the person. Wont be creative but then kids aren't creative. And if they want to name them Crapface that's their choice. Do I think it's stupid, yes, but I'm all for basic freedoms.
