Question How long is too long for an anime/manga series?

I was on MangaStream the other day, seeing if Hoshino or Kishimoto had updated their manga, when I stumble upon a title by the name of Hajime no Ippo. It was on chapter 940, which made me think: "Oh hell naw, what could they POSSIBLY be doing to make it drag out THAT LONG?" Really, if you're a fan, I wanna know. No, nevermind, I'll just Google it when I care enough.
I can't speak for anyone else, but if an anime/manga is too long or too far ahead, I usually don't even start it or give up finishing it. (Expect Sailor Moon, I'm not giving up on Miss Moon.) I've been meaning to watch Katekyo Hitman Reborn or Bleach, but it seems so far ahead I throw in the towel. Maybe I'm just lazy. Probably. I told you in my intro I'm lame. The longest ones I've been watching are Naruto and DGM, and that's just because I've been reading/watching them since day one.

I prefer anime series under 120 and even fewer. The shorter the series, the less fillers as well as fewer opportunity for the producers and writers to create episodes that sort of repeat story lines...if you know what I mean :/ often times when you get a series that runs up to 200 episodes or more the events that happen are rather similar lol and get old fast.

As far as manga goes, I would say...15-20 volumes is a decent amount, after that it should stop lol

as long as the series stays as "filler free" as possible, and the story continues to be good.....then there is no "too long" imo.

I don't really see how a series can be 'too long' - most people will watch/read a series illegally, and the only problem I can see the cost. You could argue that losing interest would be a problem, but at the same time, would you be reading or watching it if it wasn't interesting? I think not.

I'm slowly catching up with One Piece manga (at Enies Lobby now) and it's becoming one of, if one my overall, favourite, and it's bloody 600+ chapters. Long series' can be overwhelming, but perseverance is the key.

Too long I would say is Anime series like Naruto and Bleach. They just never end, they are good but too long.
I would say a good lenght is between 50-100 episodes. Depending on the actual anime.
In terms f manga I would say between 15-20 volumes. That's not too long and not too short.

No, you wouldn't. Unless, which is usually the case, it was interesting, and then the more it stretched out, the more it sucked. Which happens.

Lol i started all the way over on One Piece,2 days ago i was on chapter 330-350ish? now im on chapter 512 or 517 i think. Its a great manga so i have no problem reading *shrugs*

I mean if its great then it can go long as it wants, but some animes like Inuyasha(bleh!) its 600+ episodes long..and its based on 1 person..thats when a anime is too long because it serves no purpose =_="

But when it comes to long animes 100-200+ i would say read the manga..its alot quicker and better in my opinion *shrugs* like bleach I remember i was on chapter 150? whichever chapter it was when Aizen left the SS, and i caught up in about 2 or 3 days *shrugs* and anime would take a whole week just about X___x
Plus it depends on how much you love thr series of whatever your reading/watching.

Another example Fairytail has 80+ episodes, i never watched or read the manga. The anime(still going) was to long and I did not feel like watching all those episodes. But the manga is 240 chapters(still going) I caught up in 2 days, because i love it!
So it all depends on interest in my opinion, plus story

And blind all fears that haunt her with your smile
    Dark light"-HIM

If the story is really good I don't mind if the anime is long. It's probably a conspiracy by the NHK but lots of animes seem to end at 24 episodes. Is that some lucky number in Japan?

It depends if it's incredibly good or not. I don't think I can find myself watching something that is very long. The longest anime I've watched is 51 episodes. I like something around the 20 episode mark, as it's not very short, but you can still fit a good story in that amount of time, and it's easier to go over and re-watch it.
As for manga, it's quicker to read, unless I really want to study the artwork in more depth, so you can get through a lot more in the same amount of time, but I still like something short so it keeps my interest.
I've been meaning to at least try to start watching Bleach or Naruto or One Piece, but it's kind of offputting to me. I could be watching numerous other series in the time it would take me to catch up to them.

Well, if you're a fan of the series you prolly wouldn't mind getting that long.

But, IMO, a series with episodes and/or chapters more than 150 is too long. Well, that seems like an understatement, so maybe I should set it up higher, prolly 200-250-ish. It seems really taxing to non-fans (or maybe not yet) to want to finish series that go that long. Unless you're that hardcore then you'll go with it.

With long series, I'm only watching and reading Naruto since it meant so much to me. I restarted everything and now I'm already at 400+ chapters and 120+ of the first anime series, I have a long way to go. -_-' Have been doing that for years now.

Most anything beyond 26 episodes are too much for me. My exceptions are some Gundam series that are 52 episodes. At the same time, 13 or 26 episodes can be too short because they don't have enough time for closure. But I'd much rather deal with that than hundreds of episodes with multiple story arcs without any defined start and finish points.

For some reason I don't care how long a manga is.
