[News] U.S. Bill S.978 [up to 5 years in prison for posting ANY copyright material]

For those who do not know what this is S.978 is a proposed bill in the U.S. pertaining to copyright. Sure you already know some dangers of posting copyrighted material. But if this new bill were to pass it'd become even more extreme.

Anything ranging from you posting a video of you chatting and the radio is on in the background could land you up to in prison for 5 years or more + fine .

Posting up your own gameplay/game review of a game of which features content of that game.

Even doing covers of songs would land you in this bill.

If it does mess with covers it'll be deemed too far reaching in regards to free speech and struck down. That said, the industry is mostly neutral to/against this bill since Let's Plays and such are free advertising, but if nothing else the IP owner has to choose to prosecute.

I think they need to be more narrow in what they put forth. With wordings such as "Uploading full length movies to online streaming sites..etc." if that is what they wish to target. But with how broad this new bill is it pretty much covers every bit of material that is copyrighted.

It sounds weird that the law would become true... since its would go against the free speach.

^ Just found those two pictures when I googled 'Gintoki beard' (weird that those two would show up... but still...) I thought they would look good in this thread. Really, even if copyrights is something that you'll need to respekt a law like this is just way over the top and to much. I think in a way it would have the opposite effect, like people would start to ignore it more 'just because' in the beginning and that is something I don't think the companys was hoping or wished for.

I think, honestly, that there is a little chance for this law to come true. It just seems way to much.

If it would come to an reality (slim chance thought) I think that some would get thrown in jail in the beginning for acting as examples, but after that.. mhhwwwwweh ~ not seeing to much that the police would look and care for that law to much. Seems like they have 'bigger fish' to handle and prioritise first. Just look at the law about downloading and such: in the beginning alot of people got 'nailed' (not sure if you say so in english) for it, got huge forfeitures and it was all over the newspapers... So in the beginning the amount of people downloading and sharing was dropping radically. But now? It looks about the same as before the law came in action. People just don't care about it so much anymore, not even the police...

Also, adding to this thread: don't forget that for example UN (Im from Europe, so im not sure about how it looks in other countries) stakes millions of euros into making a 'safer internet'. And then it's not only the internet that shows crimes, but also things that they think supports 'harmful behaviour' (what now those things could be...). Facebook is one example of pages that have been wroting on contract saying that they will work and support a 'safer' internet. Luckely alot of laws that goverments and 'higher ups' wants to make a reality isn't often possible if not changing a countrys constitution. That's why I don't think that this law that Blue wrote about will become a reality, because it goes against your constitution about the free speach. Atleast that is my inner wishing point of view that it would have to go to that (so it thus wouldn't be possible)...
