PlayStation 4 development 'under way'

Being 6 months behind computers and being 6 years behind computers is different. Current generation consoles are absolutely medieval compared to current generation computers. The reason you don't see it that clearly is that most developers develop for both PC and consoles at the same time, and thus cripple the games so that they support vastly inferior console hardware.

Thing is, Eric, to get Crysis to run like that back in 2007 you'd have to have spent maybe $4,000 on the maximum-high-end hardware. I mean even today you'd still need a top-end computer to run it like that; I don't think even mine would run it properly and when I bought mine I had all the best stuff in it (this thing's from 2009, you know).


By the way, if this thing comes out in 2014 do you think they'll have 'swappable graphics cards' in them so those people that whine about graphics can spend an extra $200 on a PS4 chip with more memory? Then again that's straying directly into PC territory, isn't it? >_>

Also I'm saying it right now - I almost certainly guarantee not to get one. Sony would have to crap out a tonload of new games in my favourite franchises (and they'd have to be PS4-exclusive) for me to consider it. This is why EA announcing that SSX 2011 is multiplatform is the reason I haven't got a PS3. lol.

I don't think so. Consoles are computers after all.

though I'd be against it, since it would send a very wrong message to consumers. basically, "only some people get the best quality graphics", which is just another way to segregate between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' on a product that is already sky high in price.

See the thing is, if you open up your Xbox or PS3, you void your warranty. It's not like the PC where you open it up to upgrade your hardware and all. Opening up an Xbox could obviously mean you are trying to flash the DVD Drive *could Piracy* or Jtagging it. So I don't ever think this "upgrade your graphic card" thing will ever happen.

EDIT: Or with the PS2 when you installed swap-magic, even if it was just to read games from other regions.

They could just design it so you could swap it without opening it up, just as something you plug into a socket on the console.

Crysis is still very much the benchmark in PC FPSes. To this date you indeed need a fairly serious rig to play it at highest settings. But even on lower settings (with which it's not that hard to get it to run. I can play the game on my mid-range laptop with decent graphics) it makes console graphics look dated and ugly.

Also, maybe the PS4 will go all out with the 50GB of a dual layer Bluray disc? Really most games are at least 26GB at full (not compressed), with the latest L.A Nore which is around 25-6GB and 21Gb compressed. The largest game as far my knowledge goes is 41.5GB and that's Killzone 3 and as runner-up, God of War 3 with 40GB.

But Killzone 3 is obvious large cause it's 3D feature and PSMove.

For what they are, these consoles are just too expensive.
I'd rather just play low end, yet entertaining games off my PC which I can also use for work.

I got a PS3 because there are games I'd rather play with a controller, and some are PS3 exclusive. if I could game 100% with mouse and keyboard on the PS3 I'd be very happy. I know there's gimmicks out there, but they're not 100% compatible.

I really just got tired of upgrading hardware. My computer is three years old, if not a little more, and I find that the games I want to play run just fine on it. In fact, AC2 and AC B on PS3 look identical to me, graphic and performance wise. I expect this computer to wear out eventually, and I know that to replace it will wind up costing me a lot, due to generational differences in hardware...so I can play PS3 and then build an ultra cheap computer for the shooters I have, and maybe SW TOR. A capable computer for that should't cost more than 300 if I scrap what I can from mine when it dies.

Anyhow, I'd bet the PS4 will be in the $700 range. PS2 was still getting games in 2008 if I recall, and newer for the sports franchises. I swear I saw an NBA 2k11 for it. I'll have my PS3 for years, games will be made for years, and by the time PS4 comes out, I'll either have the money for one, or I'll be busy with work and family, and not be a gamer anymore.

Heard the news a while ago, all that PS4 talk was about the NGP (PSVita).

Today a Sony spokesperson has stated Mr Kato’s comments were taken out of context and was meant to reference their work on the NGP

You have to know thats obviously a lie. They've been working on the ps4 probably since the ps3 came out.

While the NGP may come out before the ps4. It's still being made and will be released in the future sometime. Around 2015 I'd imagine. They just don't want people all up in their grill just yet as you still have a few more years to go.

The witcher games has always had a series of unfortunate design decisions. Nice graphics, but man those unfortunate design decisions. Especially in combat. Ugh.

Tried the first one but couldn't get over how he held a sword over his head to attack. Just really bugged me otherwise it'd be just up my ally since I love those types of games.

Wii U is not a threat and we don't need a PlayStation 4, says Sony boss

Considering some of the trash talk Tretton has come out with over the years his new interview with Forbes was pretty mild, although he did have time to characterise Nintendo franchises as only for casual gamers, Microsoft only for a 'shooter audience' and Sony for 'the masses'.
'It’s a very healthy industry, there’s room for everybody,' he said more sensibly. 'We’re going after a lot of the same things, but I think consumers get the product differentiation. They kind of gravitate to one brand or another, depending on what their tastes are.'
Most of the interview was concerned with the PSVita portable, which he insisted would primarily be marketed as a gaming machine: 'Gaming is our core strength and we’re going to play to our core. But I think we’ve learned a lot of lessons from the PSP in terms of mass non-gaming audiences, and we’re going to try to tap into some of that with Vita.'
The real meat of the interview came when he was asked about the PlayStation 4, which he denied was coming out any time soon: 'PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have …
'So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.'
This has, for obvious reasons, been the company line for some time - even though back in May Sony admitted it was working on a new home console. That's not the smoking gun it may sound like though as all console manufacturers start work on the next console as soon as the previous one is finished.
According to Tretton there's nothing about the Wii U that's going to force his hand either: 'I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.
'Our attitude is kind of "welcome to the party." If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us.'
