Default North American perceptions of the European Union - Your turn to share your opinion!

I will endeavour into asking for your own personal opinion, as a forums user socialised in some kind of North American community, what your impressions are about the European Union.

Do you understand what the European Union is accountable for?
Do you think it follows effectively and efficiently policy aims?
What would you see in a more positive light about the European Union compared to North American governments/politics?
What don't you like at all?
    What can be done better?
What should stay the same way?
    What bothers you?
Should the US/Canada collaborate more with the EU or shouldn't it? Why?

Everything else can be included here. Just share your thoughts, opinions, doubts.
I would also like to ask poster to not use any methods of bashing, trolling, insulting, etc. Let's just be civilized .

Okay, V. You asked me to answer these... And I'll do so to the best of my ability. o_o

Do you understand what the European Union is accountable for?

-Isn't the EUs main function to tie the European states together financially and politically? I guess the answer would be 'no'.

Do you think it follows effectively and efficiently policy aims?

-You've got me. I'm an ignorant American. Sadly I have no idea what goes on in the rest of the world.

What would you see in a more positive light about the European Union compared to North American governments/politics?

-You asked the wrong person to answer these questions.

What don't you like at all?

-That I know so little about the subject.

    What can be done better?

-I've heard that it's hard for people in the EU to break out of their class. It'd be nice for the poor to be able to work their way up. Maybe kind of level the playing field for everyone. Oh, and your silly money. It's just so... silly. You should probably fix that.

What should stay the same way?

-The consistency in which countries like Switzerland and France produce hot ladies.

    What bothers you?

-That I have to wear a Canadian patch on my backpack to travel the EU safely. Predigest, much?

Should the US/Canada collaborate more with the EU or shouldn't it? Why?

-I think it'd be a good idea for all of Humanity to get on the same page and start working together. How is it we still have issues cooperating?

Sorry V, like I said, ignorant American. My degree is in studying people, not political science. Hope this is good enough.

I have more positive feelings of European politics than I do US politics.

It might just be a case of the "grass is always greener".

I would prefer if the whole of Europe was more centralized like the US as a federal government. Doubt it happen anytime soon though..

I'm European and I have no idea what the EU is about. So far I've gathered it's some non-democratic organization that has taken over much of Europe. Beyond that there's too much bureaucracy for anyone to know what's actually going on. You're usually informed after the fact if they've made a change to some law.

Do you understand what the European Union is accountable for?

I believe it ties the member states together politically, financially, and culturally. It eases border crossings and allows citizens of one member state to live and work easily in another member state. It also allows for commonality in law enforcement and common defence.

Do you think it follows effectively and efficiently policy aims?

    Yes, for the most part.

What would you see in a more positive light about the European Union compared to North American governments/politics?

    I see no positives.

What don't you like at all?

I will answer this more thoroughly at the bottom.

    What can be done better?

    No comment. I don't live there, so I don't have a criticism.

What should stay the same way?
    No comment. I don't live there, so I don't have a criticism.

    What bothers you?

The lack of national sovereignty and the erosion of individual culture.

Should the US/Canada collaborate more with the EU or shouldn't it? Why?

Sure. We have plenty in common with our European friends, and can all benefit doing business and making war together.

I see no positives to the way the EU is set up because I believe that national sovereignty is very important to me. I strongly believe that a country should be governed by it's own people, and accountable to no one but it's own citizens. The EU is made up of individual nations, who have many similarities and many differences. German and French culture are not English culture, and so on. I feel that the way the EU breaks down borders between the member states erodes traditional cultures by promoting a "citizen of the world" viewpoint I disagree with. It de-emphasizes what it means, in my opinion, to be French, in favor of what it is to be European. And above the EU all of those nations bow to the UN, which is something else I disagree with.

Also, when a nation joins the EU, generally they take up the Euro currency, forsaking their own, with few exceptions. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on that country's financial situation, but it ties them too closely to the others. There is a reason the Norwegian Kroner or the Great British Pound is worth more than, say the Yuan or the Euro or what have you, and to take that advantage away strips another part of the identity of the respective country away.

Finally, the breakdown in borders permits a free flow of migrant workers and immigrants. It's sort of like illegal aliens here, but legal. So if you, living in Paris, can pay some dude from Turkey a fraction of what a Frenchman would accept, you're bringing the standard of living down for all French people. This would have worked well had they kept the Middle East and Eastern Europe OUT of the EU. Once the cheap labor flows in, everyone's wages go down. It's a lot like the problem the border states have with legal and illegal Mexican immigrants.

    @Blue Footed Booby

You say its harder for people to move into wealthier classes in the E.U., I must say its quite the opposite its harder for the poor in the U.S to become wealthier as the Rich always become richer and the poor become poorer. The reason being you ask? Simple really because the U.S government is so backwards thinking that it thinks like a Victorian British person and that is if you are not in work you are simply lazy to work and if you are not a U.S. citizen you are entitled to nothing. Europe has moved beyond this simple ideology and consequently the movement of people within different classes can move more freely

Not at all. If you're born lower class in the UK you're pretty much stuck that way, where as people like uh.. What's a good example.. Oh yeah, pretty much anyone involved in the Rap/Hip Hop culture coming from the lower class and, to owning Bentleys and giant houses, and light sabers and junk.

My mother was born in a lower class white trash family and now makes six figures.

Maybe it's changed a little bit since the 70s and 80s, but surely I wouldn't have heard of it, and generally most Americans don't care about the EU or UK yada yada yada.

You're all making the mistake of thinking of the EU as one country, it's a collective of nations varying hugely from each other in almost every way possible. For arguments sake i'll do the class one, It is mostly based on the education systems with the ones offering free higher education (Scotland, chunks of Scandinavia etc) it is much easier to change social class than in the States whereas in other countries there is a very rigid class structure due to privatized further and higher education.

Why howdy ya'll, names Tom and I'm a stand up yankee like the rest of ye. I like beer and bacon and I think the EU is the best place on earth. It has castles and other fancy stuff that us Americans can't afford over here. So Europe is the best place ever, yup thats coming from a real American. I swear.
This is a Sig. It's horribly out of date.

    - Do you understand what the European Union is accountable for?

Besides bringing the Euro currency, which destroyed economy in every country and doubled prices (without doubling the wager) in some with the intention of leveling prices to destroy the inustry in the lesser countries, and inventing the silliest C€ norms that demand an industrial machinery to be reduced to a child's toy for safety reasons and yadda yadda ya.... I'd say they are responsible for the large ammounts of Gayness and Fail.

    - Do you think it follows effectively and efficiently policy aims?

What policy? Do they have a policy? I'll bet it's written in Jew!

    - What would you see in a more positive light about the European Union compared to North American governments/politics?

That they suck as much cocks and balls as the US' politicians in that they're no better than those slobby, overweight pigs that pretend to fight for an argument they don't reallt care about while subtly implementing one law/tax they secretly agree on.

    - What don't you like at all?
The entire EU concept; it blows roosters.

    - What can be done better?

Anything ranging from abolishing it to eliminating political leaders and keeping the location-based legislation (i.e. I like snorting coke in Croatia; no need for it to have Belgium's laws).

    - What should stay the same way?

    The independent country principle.

    - What bothers you?

That retarded anthem! Have you ever heard it? It's the worst hit single that Beethoven ever produced!

    - Should the US/Canada collaborate more with the EU or shouldn't it? Why?

I'd say they're already circlejerking, but I wish they'd stop that; it makes Yorpeeans look as bad as 'Murikans.
