Try Minami-Ke. It's no Azumanga Daioh but it's a pretty funny show with lots of quirky characters.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
Short around 13 episodes + 2 ova. New season coming out in a few months. Pretty funny and overall just great.

Touch
Probably my favorite anime involving school.
It centers around twin brothers and baseball. Don't want to spoil much but it is a really great show. I warn you its from 1985 but still really good. Be prepared to cry.

I have not seen Cross Game but its from the same creator of Touch also involving school and baseball.

Both Touch and Cross Game involve romance and drama.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei~!!! It's about a pessimistic teacher who wants his students to adapt his point of view but unfortunately for him it doesn't work that way.

Ultra Maniac~!!! It's more about magic girls.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge~!!! Well the school parts aren't dominant but it is a good watch.

Jigoku Shoujo~!!! Well, same as YamaNade that the school parts aren't dominant (except for Jigoku Shoujo: Mitsuganae).

Death Note~!!! Well, for the first few eps. at least.
