    No, not overtly.
I'm going to go out on a limb here: For people to expect a violent reaction from Muslims for what wouldn't be worth a mention if done to a Christian or Jewish icon or text, people have to expect Muslims to be particularly violent by comparison. It isn't right, but the paranoia of marauding Muslim hordes is what drives the preoccupation with tiptoeing around Muslim sensibilities.
Personally, the few Muslims I've met have seemed very hospitable and welcoming.
Quite. I'm alleging an irrational fear of violent Muslims is what drives the worry and cries of culpability for Jones should anything happen. Everyone seems terrified of saying anything that might upset Muslims, all while other peoples and religions are insulted and mocked freely, all day long, with no real worry or consequence.
What he's doing is going a step beyond simple protesting. He's looking to get some sort of reaction out of Muslims.
Firstly, I'd like to point out that burning a sovereign state's flag or colors within that state's borders could also be considered as such, but you'll notice that's still allowed, even applauded at times.
Secondly, what good is a protest that elicits no response?
Thirdly, expression is protected, not "protest," nor "art." It's much more general than you seem to think.
While I get what you're saying about the fear of banning of expression, and it's valid, it's at the same time not right to attack a specific group like he's doing.
No, it isn't ethically right, but it's legally permissible and protected expression. You can get away with a whole lot, provided it's merely expression. A book burning does not endanger anyone, nor does it deny anyone their protected rights, either.
It's quite evident that the only reason he's doing it is to get a reaction. He quite obviously gets some enjoyment out of it as is evident back in September when he said he wouldn't do it if they didn't build a Mosque on ground Zero. He's on nothing more then a power trip.
Yeah, I agree, the guy is a scumbag attention {word meaning one who engages in sexual acts for financial compensation has been redacted}, but that still doesn't bar him from protected expression.
The KKK is legally protected when they go burn crosses in a field amongst their own, and they don't get into (legal) trouble by spewing hateful nonsense. They only get into the criminal realm if they move to action.
Similarly, Jones might be a noisy fool, but unless he actually starts the violence or threatens it, he remains a mere moron.
Basically, freedom of expression is fine, attacking a group or organization in a way that makes it seem like they started it if they retaliate, is not.
If Muslims (or other parties, to cover everything) react violently, then they have started the violence. I couldn't very well hear another man insult my political opinions, respond with a knife to the thigh, and then tell the police that he incited me to violence, could I?

Killing others because of orthodoxy- usually Canon law, in the west's case- is something we've tried to abandon in the Dark Ages. I'd rather not see it revived, nor would I like to see self-censorship or imposed censorship because of threats of violent retaliation from those who don't agree with an opinion or expression, no matter how idiotic that expression may be.

It would seem these phantom, short-tempered Muslims everyone's worked up about have forgotten that, stupid as Jones is, Christians are also people of the book.

This allows this subset to grow in number, as we know that nothing rallies violent people like an external threat.
Perhaps you speak pragmatically or diplomatically, in which case your comments have more merit than I've given them so far, but speaking ethically and legally as I am it's pretty clear there are a lot of morons weighing in, and they're shorting the value of free speech.
Given what you say, political and social condemnation of Jones and his ilk are sufficient and warranted. Indeed, I've also said he's at least stupid, maybe prejudiced. That being said, there is little to no way his actions thus far are criminal, and I maintain that if anyone reacts violently to it, they are also stupid, and they are criminal.

It is unethical for Jones to behaves as he has, but it is also important to recognize that retaliatory violence or threats of violence are unethical. Additionally, as I hold governments to a different ethical standard than I do individuals, it is unethical for politicians and people to seek to misuse the power of the state to forcibly or coercively censor him, and calls to brand him as criminally culpable in any possible resulting violence rather than merely rebuke him is foolish.

Are we hinting at a double standard, or is this something else?

"Double standard" isn't quite the right term- I'm struggling to articulate my precise meaning- but it's awfully close to a part of what I'm saying.

I suppose I'm more trying to use it to show that the Muslims are singled out as being expected to respond violently to what is otherwise normal if low-brow western expression. I don't know how that kind of expectation is received by Muslims individually or as a group, but I'd find such an expectation of me condescending and insulting.

If I can figure out how to phrase this another way, I'll give it a shot.

No, what I'm getting at is common decency and respect. Neither of which he is showing. While I'll admit, this might be getting national attention when it shouldn't, I still would be saying the same thing, if say, a Jew or Muslim decided to burn the Bible. And if it was simply him burning the Quran, which he did with no legal consequences, it's that he's continuing he pursuit into this. What's stopping him from doing something else after this? He's pretty much raging war and his actions have already had severe consequences in Afghanistan. What he's doing is going beyond freedom of speech. He's doing what we here on the Internet call flame bating and it's causing serious problems. You can only push people so far. And he's looking to push them to that and claim, ah ha they're nothing but savages. It needs to stop before it gets out of control.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was the right term either.

However, if we look at what happened the last time this person tried to provoke the Muslim community; he was, in a way, successful.

I, also, don't think it's very helpful to the Muslim stereotype that anytime they're show on television they're burning Flags and rioting. At least, that's what was on when I watched TV, I can't really comment on what's shown now.

This guy is looking for reactions from his Quran-burning practices. Unfortunately, people are reacting. You can't argue with ignorance, and this guy is the epitome of that statement.

I feel I should note that my habit is to respond to all of the noise in the room at once, so please don't think my arguments are personal, or even necessarily directed entirely at what you've posted. (It makes for poor discussions, but better missives.)

    Agreed so far.
And if it was simply him burning the Quran, which he did with no legal consequences, it's that he's continuing he pursuit into this. What's stopping him from doing something else after this?
Slippery slope? Or is there another term better suited to this idea?
Because he burns the Quran does not necessarily mean he will go beyond that, and you cannot regulate or punish that which has not yet taken place.
If or when he does something else, then harsher action, perhaps legal action, will be warranted.
He's pretty much raging war and his actions have already had severe consequences in Afghanistan.
Wars are waged by burning ancient religious texts? In a location remote from the violence?
I think we've all learned something here today!
What he's doing is going beyond freedom of speech. He's doing what we here on the Internet call flame bating and it's causing serious problems.
You'll notice that 4chan is still up, and except for when they DDoS sites or post material in violation of copyright law or kiddie porn or something, they're allowed to flame all day, legally. You'll also notice that the law does not ban trolling, but typically a site's TOS agreement does- it's akin to a contract.
In the same way, private persons and parties can disassociate from Jones, but the government (via criminal law) doesn't get to shut hum up unless he actually violates a law. He hasn't yet; he's just been a nuisance.
You can only push people so far. And he's looking to push them to that and claim, ah ha they're nothing but savages. It needs to stop before it gets out of control.
Oh, I agree, he ought to be stopped, but the government can't do it. Good old fashioned shunning would do the trick. Social pressure and abandonment of Jones are the answer, not panicked calls to illegally detain or prosecute him because of his embarrassing displays.

Burning a book is not going too far. You should be criticizing anyone who would become violent over the burning of a book rather than the burner. All Jones is doing it being provocative. Those who react violently should be given the sole blame for their actions, just as Jones should be given the sole blame for provoking them. What would you say if Jones was a woman in a dark alley?

In this case I'd heavily agree with Wio.
It's true books like the Quran and Bible mean a lot to some people (as flags and the like can have great meaning for others), but the copies you see these turkeys burning are just a weakened mass produced version of these texts. They're not the older more accurate versions of the book, but those that have been further diluted by people constantly mistranslating or purposely altering the texts as time goes on. They should be seen as having zero value by the religious and non religious alike just as a terribly translated copy of a classic like say, Sherlock Holmes (or one of any number of old books), would have zero worth.

No, I'm criticizing his intent. The book itself doesn't matter. What matters is what the text means to the Muslim people and by burning it he's showing a vast disdain for the Muslim people. Which is further implicated by his desire to hold a meeting in front of a Mosque. And yes it'd fall on them if they retaliated but they shouldn't have to deal with this in the first place. It's simply not fair to them. They should have just as much right to peace and respect as anyone else. And your woman analogy confuses me.

There is no right to peace and respect. Jones should just as well say "I shouldn't have to deal with 9/11 so look the other way if I attack a few Muslims." It's ridiculous.

Saying mean things against a collective is trivial in comparison to violently attacking an individual. I find it ridiculous that you try to use the former to justify the latter. I'd also propose that directly insulting someone is a trivial insulted in comparison to not holding them accountable for their actions.

I don't mean right as in written law. I mean right as in basic human rights. Something should be entitled to. His acts individually are small, yes, but who knows how far he'll take it. If the cops can't do anything about it then it falls to citizens to take some kind of stand. There's a lot someone can do to one man to stop that doesn't violate the law. I never said it had to fall to the police. Though they should watch him carefully.

No, there are really only 3 reasonable response to another's exercise of free speech:
    Agree
Disagree (This doesn't include insulting the speaker, by the way)
Nothing (This option includes ignoring the speaker)

Burning a book is an expression of speech. There are things that trump free speech, but sentimental value is not one of them.

I wasn't referring directly to the book. I was referring to the fact he wont leave these people alone. There's what happen back in September, the burning and now potentially a gathering outside a Mosque. These things do add up even if they're minor. And there's nothing stopping him from just adding more fuel to the pyre.

This is going very good for the Quran typography industry. They should print more low-quality copies and sell them in a 3-piece-only package. Muslim authors get the big share in the end.

True enough; arguing with ignorance is like yelling at a brick wall and won't get you anywhere. However we can stand in the guy's way and be a royal pain in the butt, as the good people of Dearborn, Michigan have shown us.

Well America was built on the expression of"freedom of speech" and of "freedom of religion", but he has just taken it too far! I mean he should just leave the muslims alone, and just mind his own business! That's my freedom of speech.

Quran-Burning-Guy is hard for me to like. If he was inciting Islamic Extremists to riot to illustrate the volatility of religious extremism I'd be fine, but nooooooo, he's simply acting like a tool because he thinks his Yahweh can beat up Allah.

Well, to be more accurate he's doing it for publicity for his goofy non-denominational church. But irregardless.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.
