Well put, Ericgamer. This would be consistent with my theory that technology's main action is in fulfilling and growing an enduser's intentions.

I say that it will not be as fruitful in quality of information, but will still replace books because of the things like the porn on pages 2-57.

    1. We don't NEED books, we need text to gather information, which can be found on any media source, such as the internet or newspaper. I'd much rather type in 'who is the current prime minister of japan' than sort through a ton of books and flip around for one section of information or sit and watch CNN until someone tells me.

    That being said...

    2. I believe intelligence comes in many forms, but to say that knowing the Speaker of the House somehow makes you wiser than the norm is silly. Intelligence also includes the ability to form your own opinions reasonably and think for yourself; it doesn't just depend on how much you know. As our Quiz Bowl coach always says, "We aren't always the smart kids, just the kids who like to read useless information". Granted, I think the kids who can remember these facts, like, say, the Battle of Hastings, and then form an opinion on it are the true 'smart' kids.

My point for this is how could previous generations be held to such a high standard when it took America more than a century to achieve voting rights for women, have equal rights for blacks, and at least attempt the whole thing of the fundamentals of America, like 'the separation of church and state' and what not? (Let's not forget the Scopes Trial)

I'm not saying that they were any less intelligent than we are today, but I think that older generations are a little offended that younger generations try and break what they consider normal. So we're branded as 'less smart'.

    3. This all being said, I do agree that if we focus too much on popular culture, we could fall prey to a society run by the less analytical. We'll have less problem-solvers, and those are the people we should be following. I also believe that if we depend on new media, such as online news and blogs, to make opinions for us, then we will lose one of those things that helps create smarter kids. Not every kid is going to be a math or chemistry prodigy, God knows I'm not, but at least I have my own mind and can solve huge problems on my own.

In summary: I don't think we'll have any more idiots tomorrow than we did yesterday or today as long as we keep kids with active minds.

On this day of days, most epic and prideful, you were born 15 whole American years ago!
Through the odds and by doing the impossible, you beat out hundreds of thousands of siblings in the great sperm race for the coveted egg.
    Probably via hax.
    Regardless! You won!
So remember, whenever someone picks on you or calls you weak or small.
Just remind them that you beat out a few hundred thousand other wimps.

And the grand prize was not dying!

I still don't think you guys get it. (Some of you had good points... But I saw enough of the following that I have to make comments about them).

I'm not talking about adults here. When you think of a construction foreman or a manager or even a well renowned artist. Usually they are not teenagers, and are at MOST on the very edge of the demographic I have been referring to.

These students have yet to take education for a specific purpose (still under the umbrella of general education), even though they may have specific interests. General intelligence is all that can be fully measured in this aspect, and even though some students may show proficiency or ability in something specific it doesn't mean they are intelligent on any standard.

I agree with Ericgamer's statement about the wider amplitude between the lowest average high IQ and the highest average low IQ. The median should begin to thin out over time.

Oh, and for those who discuss the philosophy behind intelligence... This thread really isn't here for that. I make the assumption that, to the best of our knowledge, the multitude of general IQ tests are reliable and as accurate as we can get it. Multiple Intelligence vs. Triarchic Intelligence vs. General Intelligence is a debate for somewhere else.

When faced with an existence so great, one becomes blind to everything and experiences only fear...

    人は平等ではない。不平等は悪ではない。平等は悪だ。そう、人は差別されるためにある。だからこそ人は争い 、競い合い、そこに進歩が生まれる。
