Last time I had a breach on Mac (no antivirus) was never. Last time I had a breach on GNU/Linux (no antivirus) was never. The two Windows 7 machines I care for, both have antivirus running, and still viruses manage to sneak through, that's why I started installing two antivirus softwares. Still, it is a huge improvement over Vista and XP and more secure than Snow Leopard according to most experts, though in practice it is different.

Also 2% is a huge risk to take

Yeah, I include vista and 7 under modern operating systems. They are significantly more difficult to write viruses for than XP and older. It's not *impossible*, because there's a large amount of idiots that insist on using their admin account to check their email and browse the web, but unless you do that, you're fairly safe (there could of course be improvements, but whatever).

Really? And as far as you know you don't have one. Or ever had one. Especially if you never did a scan. And like I said, over a year and I'm still using XP. You just have to be proactive. One of the reasons I browse with fire fox is for some of the protections some add-ons like no script provide. If anything rears its head it's immediately quarantined and I'm notified that it needs to be deleted. So the virus argument is moot as long as the user knows what they are doing.

Thing is many older programs need administrator credentials to run properly. Windows 7 is very secure, it is just that it is a big target and hindered by bad past decisions. That's why even being more secure than OS X 10.5 and 10.6 it still had more malware and viruses. I believe Windows will be even more secure with an applications marketplace, not too long ago we've learned that there are virus infected versions of VLC for Windows hosted by shady sites.

IE9 in Windows 7 is safer than Firefox, in fact ever since IE8 on Vista Firefox can't match the security of Internet Explorer. If you really cared about security you won't be using Windows XP. Try another antivirus software, there might be more breaches than you realize. Not all antivirus software perform similarly some detect what others can't and vice-versa.
We also aren't just talking about viruses, there is more to security than that. How safe is it against intrusions?
But I can ignore all experience, and all what the security researchers say and take your word for it. Tonight I'm wiping Ubuntu, Windows 7 and OS X Lion and switching back to XP

I think I really need to go to the opticians now since the last I heard internet explorer is the BIGGEST security hole in the windows OS and most of the updates (and I mean from IE7 onwards) have been copied from firefox.

Also you should google macdefender which was the biggest threat to mac users (I say was since it seems the Russian rozzers have taken down the operation) which caused apple to implement a anti-malware system to detect this threat and remove it (plus the fact that the creators kept on altering the program to get past the detection of prior versions).

@Aizmov I'm gonna call you on Internet Explorer being more secure then Fire Fox. I want to see some evidence of that. As for hackers, there's a few simple things you can do such as not run the admin account like Eris said. And don't set a password, shocker, but, the prevents your computer from being accessed remotely so you have to actually log on to it manually. There's also having a ten plus character password consisting of randomly capitalized letters and numbers. For each character over ten you add years to the time it'd take an automatic password cracker to decode the password. And as for keyloggers that'd fall under being vigilant. As for another anti-virus software, I'm using three. Two Paid and one free but highly recommended. And yes 7 is more secure, I'd love to own it but I can't afford it as I need one with XP compatibility for some of my games. As for your last comment, now you're just being stupid. I'm just saying if you use a less secure OS you need to be vigilant. If you do that you should be fine.

    Ahahaha, cute.

It's an older article but a bit relevant:

IE8 and 9 are more secure due to sandboxing and process isolation, firefox stll doesn't have that.

Also MacDefender is a minor risk, one malware is hardly an issue and if you have common sense you are fine.

That's great, still fails compared to all the add-ons for Fire Fox. More specifically, NoScript, which prevents ALL scripts from running till you allow it. Everything starts blacklisted, of sorts, till you white list specific scripts for sites you trust. There's also no redirect, cs lite, and many others. And, you can't be fine with common sense on XP? Does common sense only work for those with MACs?

Common sense fails against the onslaught of threats facing Windows XP. Just Google the hacking of Google and other major US companies by Chinese hackers that used a security flaw in Windows. Are you claiming to be better at being secure than a dozen or more corporations? all with their own CSOs?

In an advisory on January 14, 2010, Microsoft said that attackers targeting Google and other U.S. companies used software that exploits a hole in Internet Explorer. The vulnerability affects Internet Explorer versions 6, 7, and 8 on Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP, Server 2003, Server 2008 R2, as well as IE 6 Service Pack 1 on Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

If you want to go that route.

You used IE, so I'm linking one using Safari. And hacking isn't the same as a virus. Everything has exploits.

How can't you compare the two? They're both default browsers for their respective OSes and they both pose security risk. Only difference is the MAC one was for a competition. It could easily have been done before that by someone with malicious intent.
