Scottish Independence

Previously just a nationalist's dream the majority Scottish National Party government recently became Scotland's first majority government with a referendum on Independence being held at the end of their term.

Prime minister David Cameron has already declared
"if they want to hold a referendum, I will campaign to keep our United Kingdom together, with every single fibre that I have."

Another blow to the English empire. Plus Scotland are very much in Englands shadow atm. They'd be allowed to develop their own industries rather than just a sort of second thing from England. At the end of the day I wouldn't really care, if the people vote one way then that's their choice.
I am curious though, if Scotland do get independence will they remain in the EU? Would they take the euro or keep the pound?

Maybe uniting the states was never a good idea. Maybe Texas should be free from the tyranny of Massachusetts-led USA too. Maybe we should all break up and get back to hating eachother and throwing rocks and grozit at our neighbour states. Who says unity equals evolution?

If nothing else we've got Alex Salmond, arguably the best politician in the UK today. if he says it's a good call then i'm backing him.

Yeah if Scotland leaves they're screwed because they'd either need to use the Euro which is rubbish which will cripple their economy or make their own currency which will cripple their economy due to poor exchange rates. Most their trade is with England anyway so might as well stay. Scotland doesn't have enough industry to support itself anyway, so really the Scottish indepenance party will bankrupt Scotland and leave it nothing more than a pitiful attempt of forging their own country.

You're listing the reasons why they're probably succeeding.

Edit: That is to say, they probably want to have sovereign control over their own monetary policy and social programs.

Also I've got nothing against Scotland, so my standing on this is moot. However, if they do succeed in gaining independence, please don't come crying back to us if it all goes belly-up for them.

In fact if Scotland does leave us then we'll suddenly have far less unemployment, less on benefits which will make more money to go around to everyone else

Sure there'd be some hard times but we'd pull through, we'd definitely benefit from having home rule. at the end of the day it's mostly down to how much we trust Big Alex to lead us, somebody that smart can't possibly be wrong,

plus if the dumb english want to involve us in wars they can't win and park all their nuclear weapons in our main population center then we can just give them the good ol' two fingered salute.

as much as we may have much worse health issues it should be taken into account that Scotland has always had a very different national identity, culture, mindset, flag and to an extent language. Scottish social problems need a local cure instead of more money from Whitehall, we need to learn to stand tall on our own instead of relying on England to help solve our problems.

Nothing personal Aether but we'd be better off independent, it'll be tough to adapt and theres strong arguments against it but in the end we've got to put our faith in the SNP and believe that it's the right choice and that Salmond is capable of leading us through it.
