Toei Animation, the studio behind One Piece Film Z, has announced the first day box office numbers! According to their data, 600,000 people purchased a ticket to see the movie on December 15th, yielding over 750 million yen (around $9.0 million USD) in sales!
Toei estimates 1 million people in Japan will see the movie this weekend, for a total of 1.3 billion yen (around $15.6 million) in sales.
If that holds true, One Piece: Film Z will eclipse One Piece: Strong World’s opening weekend, which is currently the highest grossing in the series! Debuting in Japanese theaters back on December 12, 2009, One Piece: Strong World took in 1.038 billion yen (around $11.7 million USD) in it’s opening weekend at the box office.
