Default Nuclear Weapons, are they really needed now?

Today, Tony Blairs government won the support to replace the old Trident missle system, even though it doesnt go out of date for another 17 years, and it will cost £20billion to make the new replacement, but now that the Cold War has been over for 17 years and the new threat is more uncertain, are neclear weapons needed?

Terrorists arn't affraid of them, so what are they detering? Really, in my opinion, there are no threats that will be deterd by nuclear weapons, so, really, they should be disposed off.

I think its not really to be a bully, but more to tell other country's "Don't mess with us...or else." And with country's like N. Korea looming in the shadows with nuclear weapons of their own it's always better to be safe then sorry in the long run.

Yep, even though people say "everyone" has nukes the only countries that are known have them are U.S.A., Russia, England, [these are the only three capable of fusion] China, France, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. Nine out of 245 countries world wide has nukes.

The world would be better off with out nuclear power(except the Simpson's).If weapons were traded in for something. But then other items like frying pans can be used as weapons and we need them to cook and what not.

If you are true ninja you would copy "i support the ninja"into your sig and help conquer the internet.

What in the hell are some of you smoking?

Nukes are a mutual assurance of destruction. If a nation were to disarm all of its nukes, it just allows another nation with nukes to use them as a trump card. You disarm your nuclear capability, and someone else is going to develop theirs. I'm sure Kim Jong Il will be REAL sad if the US did that, REAL sad.

Must be nice to live in a fantasy world where everyone gets along and no one takes advantage of the weaker guy

Nukes are a way of making nations feel more secure. Several influential nations have them, and can feel safe knowing that they can wipe another nation off the face of the planet. Nukes allow us the comfort of knowing that we have the leverage to keep other nations from using nukes. It grew out of the Cold War. Neither the U.S. nor Russia wanted to use nukes because that would cause retaliation and a thermonuclear war. There fore, we have nukes, but won't use nukes.

I think they'll be around for a long time but it would be nice if they were gone. But I don't expect nukes to be ever used again in warfare.

We'll need them until either something makes them obsolete/ineffective, or makes something better/more effective. As has already been said, it's more of a barganing chip than an actual weapon. People are more hesitant to encroach upon you if they know you have that kind of power.

Granted the Cold War is over but there are three threats that pose a danger to the security of the world, one is steadily declining though: China, North Korea, and Iran.

North Korea has nukes and they are seeking a delivery system. Now negotiations with them seem to be going good, time will tell how they turn out. But Kim no longer seems like the wild nut that will go flinging nukes anymore since he is at the negotiation table.

Iran... my god..the aggressive Shi'ite ruled former Persian Empire scares the crap out of me. That's right they aren't Arabs in Iran, they are Persians and when I realized that they behavior made a LOT more sense. Anyhow, jihadists having nukes...all I can say to all you folks in Great Britain is "God save the Queen"

And China... the hidden enemy. You're all going "wtf?" I know you are cause I did too when I first heard that, but if any of you can explain the largest military buildup within a country that is proceeding at a faster pace then the buildup of the Nazi military before WWII, I'd love to hear it.

I believe the official terminology is "M.A.D", mutually assured destruction. If you launch at us, we'll launch at you. So in that respect, having nukes actually can be seen to increase stability and peace.

Thanks but I believe Iran's most likely target would be Israel or the US.
Anyway, missile defense is the next big thing. You Americans already have some on the west coast, and you're about to build one for us in Europe, too. Thanks

Edit: Browsing your missile defense website (www.mda.mil), it seems your military share my view on Iran's most favoured targets!

They are needed. As long as more than one sentient being lives, there will always be a weapon created which will be stronger than all the others. Since most of the bigger countries have nukes, I wouldn't mind if our country get huge missiles or something, for defense of course, I sure wouldn't want us to go against North Korea or something O.o

Allies~ pfft. They only call on us when they need dispensable lackeys to deploy.

Today, Tony Blairs government won the support to replace the old Trident missle system, even though it doesnt go out of date for another 17 years, and it will cost £20billion to make the new replacement, but now that the Cold War has been over for 17 years and the new threat is more uncertain, are neclear weapons needed?
Now that is the problem, of course. Officials will try to milk money out of the project in a "legal" way.

(PM option is off. I refuse to hear people whine.)

I don't think the UK needs nukes, though I can't say the rest for the rest of the world. Well, the US may never ignore its history of being a former colony, but there's no more opportunities for Pax Britannica to rise again.

I believe that anybody who compares the rise of Nazi Germany and the rise of the ChiComs (is that offensive to anybody? If it is, I'll change it. I just like the abbreviation) is making a rather bad analogy. The Weimar Republic was a place of chaos, with coups and the worst economy in Europe (can't verify that, ah well). China is doing very well economically, with none of the hyperinflation. They have one party with total dominance since 1949, whereas the NSDAP had only been around 12 years when the Reichstag fire happened. In fact, China may be in the best state it's had since the early Qing Dynasty, while the Weimar Republic was a pretty sorry state.

On the other hand, if you're only comparing the military buildup like señor Apollo is, you have to remember that while building up its strength, Hitler took gambles with Germany's strength, like the Rhineland dispute, the Sudentenland (though many can argue that Bush is doing the very appeasement that Daladier and Chamberlain succumbed to), it was a fairly significant leap (though you can say the PRC is threatening Taiwan as Germany did Czechoslovakia. Then I'd have to kill you for such a bad analogy). And vastly different.

1939 was really the first year that the Wehrmacht was ready, and it was a force that was just churning to be used. There has been a buildup of the PLA, but its use isn't going to be immediate.

Of course they are. The cat is out of the box, and there is no putting it back in there. That's the problem with nukes: Once you get them, you can never get rid of them.

I'm not trying to say that China will go on a conquering rampage like Nazi Germany did. I'm merely pointing out and their military buildup over the past few yr as has been at an alarming rate. And considering that they already boasted one of the largest militaries in the world a few yrs ago, I'm only putting forth the questions as to why they feel they need to be bigger. While also pointing out the historical trends surrounding military buildups.

As others before me have said before me nukes in away promote peace because of fear of retaliation. They also provide protection against larger threats such as asteriods and comets. Though while it's unlikly someone will nuke someone by an act of war it could happen by accident.

The United State gov has LOST several nuclear bombs during missions and over U.S. soil too.

Our biggest threat is our own bombs going off on us.

nukes are made by weapon to flex their millitary muscle and send out a message of "DONT MESS WITH US"....it is pointless for nuclear weapons to exist...but it does provide a buffer safety against terrorists...

Wow, some of the first posts here are terrible.

Let's put this in context, shall we? Let's say that we DID get rid of the nukes. Suddenly, other countries that don't like us AND have nuclear weapons don't find us as much of a threat before. What kept them from bombing us was our extensive stockpile of nuclear weaponry. So, without the threat of counter-attack, we would be at the mercy of their nukes.

In other words, they're our psychological defense.

Don't make me laugh, what we should worry about is the chance of black-market suit-case nukes from the former Soviet Union. Those are much more easily acquireable, though they risk a higher chance for decay (which would make detection easier, so hmm . . .).

And if you think about it, nuclear weapons aren't much of a deterrent to terrorists. If Hezbollah destroyed Tel Aviv, Israel might invade Lebanon, Syria, etc, but it can't go to war and nuke Hezbollah itself, as it's an organisation (and political party), but it can go to war and destroy the nations that support it (though the IDF marching on Tehran is quite an unlikely possibility).

well first off i'm a us citizen so i have a right on this matter, and i agree that we shouldn't have nuclear weapons. America is like everyone's younger brother, it's been here the least amount of time, but we think we're smarter than everyone. The truth is, america sees herself as "the supporter", we always want to go in with guns blazing to help everyone, which is a good and bad thing. It's good when we go and help for a bit, get a few allies and leave, Bad when we just stick over there until the people we wanted as "allies" are becoming our enemy because we won't leave them alone. The truth is, america is broke, how will we pay for that new "defense" if we don't have the money? simple, write a check that doesn't support money behind it :P.

Either way america is trying to spend what it doesn't have on this new missle and i believe it's not worth it either....
