nostalgia goggles??? What is that???
In my opinion, the Pokemon TV show is like the cartoon equivalent of a soap opera in that there is really no main storyline and it's pretty much being milked for as much money as it can be. Other than the first two or three seasons which were decent enough in their own right, way back when I was just a little tyke, I found the first few movies to be pretty good. But after that, it just kept getting more and more repetitive with no real change worth paying attention to.
At this point, all I'm the slightest bit curious about is how they're going to end it.
Of course I do! But only like the first 2 generations. What's with all the new characters and Pokemon? I wonder where they get the motivation to think up of names and such for them. >_>
O ok. I haven't decided wether I like the new ones yet or not...they look woerd to me...not even like pokemon style in my opinion
Hence the term "nostalgia goggles".
Really, the only people who hate the last few generations (really, the generations after II), the ones who view those generations with malice, are the ones who are old enough to have experienced Pokemon right from the beginning, whether they were kids or otherwise. This same phenomenon is the reason why people say that the cartoons on television suck now (compared to previous shows) despite the fact the fact some of the newer shows (e.g. Flapjack, Chowder) have actually won a bunch of awards (not joking).
The thing to remember is that Pokemon is a kidís game. Itís for kids and itís aimed at kids. The mechanics (and the nostalgia) keep hardcore fans coming back for more, but really, the gaming is a glorified bug-catching simulator. The game's appeal is the little monsters that kids can catch and they are made so that girls can find them cute and so that boys will find them awesome and so that both boys and girls will ask their parents to not only purchase the game but all the other crap that comes with it (e.g. clothes, backpacks, cards, toys, plushies).
The Pokemon are NOT designed to cater to the fan's ever insatiable nostalgia, where the creators could probably design a fire-breathing dragon with six black wings and a Chuck Norris fist but still get blasted because itís not as cool as Charizard.
Being me, I went to school with Pokemon being the "it" thing to talk about. I went through the phase that mostly every kid went through around the time of 1998 - 2001. Come 2010, those times are gone. I remember when Pokemon aired on TV, and I can admit how great of a show it was, BUT those times are gone. As a hardcore fan, I continue to play the games but I must avoid the show at all costs. Its a sad image of what it used to be.
No... I'm not so bent on nostalgia that I'm only interested in the original Pokemon, or only the original series. But that's exactly my point... Pokemon has not really moved on at all... and I'm not just saying this for 1st-gen fans (like myself), but also for the later-gen fans as well. Disgard the Pokemon's new names and new colours (as I mentioned before)... and just what exactly are you left with? Quite frankly, I think Nintendo's general aim behind the Pokemon series is an insult to the intelligence of old and new fans... kids and adults.
Yeah... I get that Nintendo are a business... just like Disney, Microsoft, Coca Cola, Nike and Warner Bros - and one's desire for a series to be directed according one's taste (including that based on nostagia) is not a right. From a business point of view, Pokemon is obviously a huge success. But it's equally obvious that Nintendo have no real intention of truely advancing the series at all, since it's making plenty of money from it as it is - and no business in the right mind would tamper with a profit-winning formula. It just disgusts me to see how an idea like Pokemon could have gone so much further if Nintendo payed more attention to its fans (new and old) and less to lining the pockets of its executives here.
In the name of business, ideas that are deliberately and commercially restrained by profitable companies like Nintendo effectively prevent the surfacing of simalar, yet more promising ideas from smaller and more fan-considerate companies. Thus, ideas from the latter are quickly defeated (usually under patents and copyright "technicalities") before ever making a public entrance. Consequently... and in the long run, fans rarely get to experience the full potential of a franchise, such as Pokemon, an idea that somehow manages to be a success... and a waste at the same time!
I only like the first 151, as its the only ones i know. I don't know anything about the others. there at 493 now.. and gonna add more for both Black and white coming out... I cant keep up with that and I doubt many children will remember all of the pokemon. When will they stop how many pokemon is too many? Thousands? I sitll think the first series are awesome but I think that the new generations have either gotten more childish or I just completely grew out of them.
Pokemon was one of my most favorit shows when I was a kid. It started in 95 when I was 9 or10 and my most favorit Pokemon is pikachu
Pokemon was my childhood favorite cartoon until now i discovered something not good behind the show...
