Ok, so earlier the writer, E.Oda, mentioned that he would like to finish one piece soon (I think he said this on volume 46) I don't know about you, but as an avid one piece reader I am saddened by this, what are your thoughts?

If we wants to finish it off it doesn't show, He keeps dragging and dragging it on.
As SpeaR said, it's around the halfway point. I believe there was an interview where Oda states(around the time skip) that OP is about halfway finished.
And I don't believe the show is dragging. Seems to me like Oda knows exactly what he's doing. There are tons of characters in this show and they don't make the show bland. All of them add more and more structure to the main cast. This is hardly ever done, especially in anime like Bleach and Naruto. They added more and more characters, but they really didn't pull it off as perfectly as Oda did.
I think when he said its almost done, he means the plot is almost done. As in, he's done writing.
I agree with the above statement.
Actually, it was said that Oda had finished the ending to One Piece a long time ago (meaning, he had already thought out the ending), but the story itself was still unfinished. It's only halfway done right now.
Actually, Oda came up with the ending to One Piece before he really started writing it - he started with the ending. From what I've read in interviews over the years, he had pretty much finished writing the major parts of the story about 5 years after he started working it in 1997; he has already decided every major event that will happen up until the end of the story - the story is already "drafted", I guess you could say.
Well it would be difficult to end it soon since there are still a few things which have to happen or all the fans will be disappointed (I don't think that Oda would like that).
Og course first there's Luffy who has to become the Pirate King but all his other crew members got dreams to (like Zoro who wants to become the strongest swordsman or Sanji finding the All Blue) and I believe that Oda won't finish One Piece before he made all the dreams come true.
And so he still has an awfull lot to do :'D
And as long as One Piece sells as good as it does right now, it won't stop anytime soon.
I heard there is still 600 more chapters to go.
One Piece will not end before chapter 1000. Let's think Shinsekai as just started at about chapter 600, and has everything to be BIGGER than the East Blue + Grand Line arc, let's call it that.
There are a lot of things that have to happen, so as Luffy and Law allying to fight Black Beard and than eachother (and also Luffy to kick Big Mom's ass), Luffy to meet his fatter at last, Luffy to give Shank's his mugiwara back (Which I think he'll not be willing to! ah ah), Luffy to fight Kid and probably also Law, Luffy to became a Youkou and, of course, the King of Pirates arriving Raftel and finding One Piece, and by the middle fantastic battles such as Luffy vs Akainu, Luffy vs Smoker, Zoro vs Mihawk... you might wanna check my new thread about that! doubt it will be over soon. it is such an amazing anime/ manga!! my fav too!
