Japanese with subtitles. Every anime that is dubbed is completely raped in my opinion.
i prefer subtitles because i like its original.....btw, dubbed aren't usually that good...they're not that accurate
subs of course ... can't stand dubbed anime (except Italian ones)
ugh i do not like dubbed anime its just sounds so different when u compare sub and dub and the dubbed ones sound stupid
Depends on the anime. Some dubs are done in such a quallity that I prefer them over the original Japanese. Other times the setting is much better with western voices.
A classic example would be Trigun. Trigun is a Sci-fi western, and you simply cannot have a western without American voices. Well, you can, but western voices sound way better in place. I also found the English Vash to be more amusing then the Japanese. Especially whenever he panicked.
Another example would be Full Metal Alchemist. Everybody is always complaining how the dubbers can't pronounce the Japanese names, in this series it is the reversed. The Japanese can't pronounce the English correctly, with the dubs the names are finally correctly pronounced.
i like subtitles the best ^^
i go for the japanese with subtitles, i just can't enjoy and appreciate english dubs, they're not appropriate don't you think so?
Actually, my entire post described a few of the situations where dubs are more apropriate.
hmmmmmmmm u no wat red storm u just might be right :D
it depends on the anime like fruits basket is really good dubbed but D.N.Angel isn't...
And that's how I know not to listen to your opinion.Quote:

Dubbed for me, I could care less how accurate to the original it is. It seems like a lot of times the english version had the dialog re-edited to make it better than the japanese. But of course I'm not a flithy fno either.
If you're all too preoccupied with how the voices sound and not the anime itself then you're not a real anime fan. Delete all the subs off your computer, you're not worthy. Oh, and I also understand that some dubs replace story elements. True, but you're dwelling too much on whether Naruto is a Ninja or Shinobi, or if Spike is a Cowboy or Bounty hunter.
dont dub it the mouths look all funny and scary
and the voices are weird
unless your five and cant read fast enough then subs
I think it really depends on the company that brought it over and who did the dubbing. Becasue Funimation really does a good job at dubbing their anime. I have not yet seen a funimation anime that has not had a good dub. Where on the flip side ADV films does not do a very good job dubbing. The mouth flaps are totally off if you watch it dubbed, and the voices dont match the characters.
So tahts why I think it reAlly depends on the company that produces it.
Funny fact: American companies actually do a better job at lyp sync then Japanese.Quote:

It does not really matter to me. Of course some dubs are very badly done, and some subs are very badly done. I find myself switching between dubs and subs all of the time. Subs are not always better. Anime such as Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Mononke Hime, and others sound better in english than they did in Japanese. I find that plot and characters should be more important to the viewing of an anime than the sound of the voices.
I agree with you... I like the subtilted ones more becaue most western voices suck...Quote:

Everyone's got a point here so let's keep it cool. I for one would prefer subbed over dubbed anytime but not 100% of the time. I think 2 out of 10 titles I wouldn't mind watching in dubbed format because what are important are the emotion and the essence of the characters being preserved. It's a known fact that western voice actors sometimes don't get it. For example we see characters animated in gut wrenching pain or screaming at the top of their lungs to emphasize agony yet when you hear it in dubbed form it's like they're getting a massage or they sound more like they stubbed a toe. A lot of anime in Cartoon network are good examples of poor dubbing. Gundam-W, Yu Gi Oh, Beyblade to name a few.

What really makes me dislike dubbing as a whole aside from the poor voice rendition is the known fact that they usually change or replace the Japanese music that go with it. I watched Dragonball-Z both in dubbed & subbed and the music was sooo forgettable in dubbed because it sounded more like the music came from an old mortal combat game. They shouldn’t do that to an anime because I believe that when you do that you turn it to a plain cartoon or it’s like eating popcorn with no salt and butter.

There are some anime I always look forward to watch in dubbed. Ranma ½ is one of them. Even though I enjoy watching it in subbed I’ll prefer dubbed because all of the characters talk so fast the punch line to their jokes are usually lost in the subtitles. In Ranma 1/2 casting is not bad either because you can recognize the distinctiveness of each character through their voices like Shampoo for example. Bad dubbing usually happens when one voice actor tries to do more than two characters. The disadvantage of subtitles usually occurs when they don’t translate what the Japanese actors are saying for compression purposes. How many instances have you seen long dialogues in Japanese subtitled in a few words? Too many I guess so dubbed has a slight advantage here.

So unless you can understand, speak and write in Japanese there won’t be a need to choose from dubbed or subbed right? http://www.animegalleries.net/bbs/im...ies/tongue.gif
oh yeh i forgot about shaman king dub i like that version! oh well never mind
i like the orignal version with english subtitles. i find often that the english voiced do not fit the characthers plus you get a free foreign langegue course if you listen carefully
I would go with subbed. It's basic, original, and the voices don't suck so bad. ^_^
it really depends...i usually listened to the american versions until 2 years ago...i can stand most american dubbing, i dont know why everyone has to freak out about it, the voices all dont suck that badly, now for things that i first heard the japanese version then i heard the english, i can understand. like:
yami no matsuei, the voices there are...meh, ok.
Gravitation: the voices suck SO bad and i refuse to watch it in english.
Naruto: meh, could be changes here and there, but trust me they could have done a WHOLE lot worse.;)
and in my opinion, dont get mad at me, but it seems american voice actors show alot more emotion and diffrence in their voices than japanese voice actors...but dont get me wrong ok? there are MANY subs that i would kill to meet the voice actor for.
There are the two most perfect examples of good dubbing choices.Quote:

I think it is interesting to hear the Japanese rather than English.
That is my opinion.

-!Capo!-
Or on the off chance you have no desire to read a show that sounds perfectly fine in english.Quote:

Another fun fact some fnos actually don't like it acually being matched correctly. And in one case got into a fist fight with a voice actor. God damned otaku.Quote:

Since I have seen neither a single Japanese nor American episode of AIR, I can't comment back to you on that one.
*Shrug* or that.Quote:

I mean not drastic changes but little words here and there. I guess some people don't mind, but I do. And they definitly don't show emotion as good as the japanese voice actors, you can't not notice it if you watch an anime in japanese then go to english, I can't stand it. Here's just one example iin particular I disliked, In samurai champloo, Mugen always screams at people and his voice is like one of a kind, the english actor sounded nothing like him and never sounded one bit enthused about anything. Horrible. The only way I would ever watch a dubbed anime again is if they get the original voice actors to learn english and say the same dialogue as they're suposed to and actualy act like they're suposed to. But that won't happen, so that's why I never watch dubbed anime.
Japanese is hard to translate to english, in the sense that the Japanese grammar does not match English gammar. Unlike most languages, Japanese is not derived from Greek or Latin. Because of this, people translate things differently, but it maintains the same meaning. They are not changing the words.Quote:

One problem with subs is when they translate the suffix "-sama". Japanese use "sama" for anything it could be, to older people, members of royalty, doctors and stuff. So "sama" doesn't have an exact translation; it could mean Mister, Missus, Princess, Prince, King, General, Leader, it's just a sign of respect.
My point exactly!Quote:

Close but no cigar, the reason the english often matches better is because they actually care if it fits or not. Often in japan animation is made before the vocals are done an idea unheard of in american animation. So the reality is if the japanese vocals don't fit just right because of a mix of lazyness and apathy.Quote:
They change the script to make it fit
Well my main point would have been that english voice actors sound like crap anyway, so it doesn't really matter. And if your watching anime on say Cartoon Network, you can't tell me with a straight face that they don't edit dialouge and even cut out scenes to make it "suitable" for americans. I don't watch anything fom there either.
They don't cut out scenes from Trigun. Dialogue is edited, so it's English instead of Japanese. I haven't watched enough of any of the other shows to know for sure, but I'm assuming it's very similar.Quote:

Whatever the category whether it's comedy, romance, suspense, horror, mecha, space etc. The Japanese are miles away from their western counterparts so I'm not usually surprised if they give an anime a makeover or overhaul just to make it acceptable to the american public.
It’s only lately that we see cartoons that are can be deemed offensive and disturbing are The Simpson’s, Family Guy, Drawn Together and South Park to name a few. Even though they have these cartoons of late it still falls short to what their Asian counterparts are capable of doing.

EXACTLY! That is what I meant when I said change the script
I dont care, either works for me, ^^' I'm more of a mangta person anyhow
I prefer subs. You can can listen to the original japanese voices and read the translations in english. But well, there are Dubbed versions that aren't complitely ruined.
P.S. I hate the dubbed version of Shaman king. 4kids really screwed it up.
There are some shows that were brought over to America, and modified to make them suitable for children. Sailor Moon, for example, was chopped up a bit so that children's networks felt comfortable showing it during their regular programming. This is different from the more adult-themed programs previously mentioned.
If you notice, Family Guy shows on Adult Swim, an adult oriented time slot on Cartoon Network. Along with that is Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, etc. There is some censorship involved from the original dub to the "suitable for tv" dub. The differences between the dubs and subs are usually MINIMAL.
Those of you who believe that all dubbed anime is censored are no more right than the people who believe ridiculous stereotypes about different cultures. Show some respect for the art of a whole anime show, no matter which language is coming from your little television speakers. In most cases, they mean the same thing.
Yeah! And if you want the uncensored version you could always buy / rent / download / watch off of youtube.com ^_^
