Why do people say "life is short" when life is, actually, quite long
I agree that "you only live once" but not with the "life is short"
I think it's short. I'd like to live for a million years.
Life is short. But the world is young so it may not seem like it.
In this world, only past and present are certain. Future is unknown. Tomorrow is not a given.
"Don't take your life for granted" is what it means. You can trip and break your neck on stairs tomorrow. Or get run down by a car. Or maybe you have a terminal illness you don't know about yet. Death awaits at every corner.
Dread the grave. Catch the day.
I've always been told that when you're young life feels like it's too long, but once you're old life will feel like it's too short.
According to the 2012 version of the CIA World Fact Book, the country with the longest average lifespan is Monaco, with an average lifespan from birth of 89.68 years.
The best approximation of the age of the universe puts it at around 13 billion years old.
Human recorded history spans about 5000 years.
The (western) Roman empire lasted for around 500 years.
The United States has only been a country for 236 years.
Two hundred years ago, 50 was elderly.
Life is getting longer, but in the grand scheme of things, it's still fleeting.
(edit: of course, the Russians are saying that they're going to try and aim for human immortality by 2050...but...Russians...)
Animals as well as human beings are not programmed to think about death. We are just unable to think about it. And then – oops - pop yer clogs.
Suppose all humans lived twice as long. Would life still be too short?
What about thrice as long? Too short then?
etc ... ?
My guess is that life will be perceived as too short no matter how long the human lifespan is ... that is, so long as it is finite.
It seems to me that what really should be said is, "life is finite," and not, "life is too short."
Quote:
Life is finite.
Lifes too long, sadly I think 40 years is long enough. Why grow old and get all nasty and wrinkly, when you can die when you're at an age were you start too get wrinkles and die looking beautiful.
But that's my opinion I'm quite sure someone will everyone will disagree but that's you're opinions :3
My point.. life's sooo long -.-
Same here, now i'm not saying that I dislike life, but as I experience new things I get bored of what i'm doing very very fast, that's just me, many people could go and do the same thing for 30 years, I could never do that, have to move on to new things all the time, in the meantime I will take life for granted, I don't care about wasting my time, for example, I would take my time at things, I would read something long and tedious if I had to just so I would understand it, I don't believe that life is too short to do such things
and I also wouldn't care about suddenly dying either, because why would I care if I were dead
False, living is the longest thing you'll ever do.
If you don't want to die at all... life is too short.
Life starts going by way faster when you get a bit older.
It feels like just yesterday I was 14 and starting High School. It feels like just yesterday I was turning 18 and getting married.
Things go by really quick in the big scheme of things. That's what makes it short.
I think the reason people say life is too short is because of all of the things that you never get to do.
When you're young you have so many aspirations and goals; everything seems open in front of you and nothing seems impossible. You have time on your hands and so much to do but hey, life is long and who is going to stop you?
Then as you grow up, you realize there are many things to stop you. Often times people are limited by money, or their lack of education, they get married too young, have children and are constantly struggling just to get by. They have no time and life seems to be whizzing by while also standing still. Stuck in the same place for too long and never enough time to enjoy the little things anymore.
Suddenly, they're seventy years old and while they don't have children to deal with and have a bit of money saved up; it gets harder and harder for them to move around because, humans age. They begin to decay. And while they may have dreams and hopes from the past; they are now in their past's future. And they're running out of time. They never got to do all of the great things they wanted; travelling the world and seeing all of the great wonders, reading that book they have been wanting to read forever, learning a new language, taking dance lessons. All of those things are so hard now to even think about doing.
And so life passes us by. Our dreams are left unfulfilled and we die.
Thus the saying is; life is too short.
Life's too short, Enjoy life to the fullest, You might die tomorrow, You might die in a week. Me, I have a thing that I'm probably going to die before i hit 30, But that's just me.
“Classical music is never enough.” – Chris.
It's funny because the average life span before was so short, people always wished to live longer. Now that science and medicine have made it possible to live longer, a lot of elderly people can't wait to die.
Anyway, I don't mind how long my life is as long as I enjoy ever minute of it. Or at least almost every minute. Sometimes I get some internet lag.
I guess because a lot of people don't notice the passage of time (example, next week I have been with my boyfriend for a year, feels like a couple of months. Next month I'm 24, where the hell did those years go?!)
Saying life is short is a reminder that you don't really notice that the time has passed until you're 24, and wondering why you haven't gone to the places you wanted to go yet. And when you reach 50 and wonder the same thing. In the grand scheme of things, we're really not around for that long
Um... Actually, life is short. Most of us do not live to be 100 years old. When you think about how long we've had civilizations, it is estimated to have been about 12,000 years ago (give or take a couple of thousand). So, we barely live even a small percentage of that. Then you go back to the age of the Earth. Then the age of the universe. Our lives are very short.
Oh, and once you start moving into adulthood the years start flying by. I can't believe I am 24 now. Really since 17/18 it has all gone too fast.
