Hostess to Liquidate Company
So apparently the company that brought several snack foods such as Twinkies, Sno Balls, Ding Dongs and the like are looking to liquidate its assets after a large-scale union strike against the company. You can read the full article here and check out what other products they make that may very well disappear for good here
Im actually really surprised by this. Hostess has been around for over 80 years and produces some pretty iconic products
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
Noooooo D'x twinkies, dingdongs, Dx im going to the convenience store today and buying 5 twinkies >xc
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
Not nearly as many people eat twinkies today as 10 or 20 years ago (due to better public awareness of transfat, so I guess it's been steadily getting harder for Hostess. Also, the company probably just didn't want to give in to its workers on strike.

It's more the later. Just another greedy company that wanted cheap labor.

Apparently its a mix of the two. They arent quite making the sales they used to, coupled with the demand of workers the company is [apparently] bleeding money
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
Supposedly the Union leaders weren't quite operating with member's interests at heart, either. They are reported to have told members one thing, the company reps another, and drug their feet when decisions should have been made. The one thing I do know, is that my home state has enough trouble keeping jobs as it is, and now one more plant has shut down. :(
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
I guess it was a lie when I was told that twinkies would last forever, but on a more serious note it bad to see another company having to close its doors in this bad economy.

Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
Noooooo my hostess cupcakes..... However will I go on ,____, chocolatey cream filled goodness with swirls on top.
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
To be honest, Twinkies are overrated anyways. :I
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
:frown: I will miss having deep fried Twinkies.

I've sadly seen that play out a number of times. A union can play hardball in the good times and successfully get more for their workers. The problem is they union bosses are payed to play hardball and tend to just keep doing it in bad times, killing the company.
Now, if a company just makes something people don't want anymore and people leave for better jobs as wages, hours, or benifits get worse than fine.
What's sad about it is that in at least the case from my home town the workers would have been a lot better off with reduced manufacturing wages, as what they landed into was unemployment or crappy part time work that pays less than they would have gotten. I'm betting that's the case here too.
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
I doubt Twinkies are actually going away, at least for any extended period of time. It's a hugely recognized brand name. They'd be idiots to just throw it away. They could sell it for hundreds of millions to a competitor.

The human race is greedy and selfish and always wants more than what it has. We don't stop to think of the consequences of our actions.
The workers, just like every human, wanted more, and didn't stop to think whether what they had was better than what would happen if they lost their jobs entirely. So in the end their greed came back to bite them, and now instead of 'less money than what they were earning' they have 'no money at all'.
Although ... what do I know. The only paid work I've ever undertaken was a paper round.
Also @Eris That's likely what will happen. The branding is too popular for it to simply disappear; the copyrights and licenses and such will get sold to another company, or another company will simply buy into Hostess (much like some company buying out the GAME/Gamestation brand in the UK to keep them from going outright bust/disappearing). Someone will seek to capitalise and take control of the name ... because of greed.
So, I'm not going to be surprised if a "Lo-Fat Twinky" shows up in the near future.
Unless that's already been done, in which case whuaaAAAAATT!?

I wonder if it would be considered a monopoly for Little Debbie to snap some of those googies for their very own....
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
I think I heard of these insignificant treats somewhere... Oh yea, aren't they products that were so eloquently advertised in Zombieland for no reason that they eventually became part of the plot? Yeah, they can just bankrupt all they can. Never tried them, never will; American special treats are pet food to us.
Re: Hostess to Liquidate Company
Its been leaked out that other competitors will be buying Hostess...and what that means for us is that certain if not all products from Hostess will still be around just under a different name of course.

I hope I don't need to explain this GIF.

That pretty much sums up my reaction to this tragedy.

“Our members decided they were not going to take any more abuse from a company they have given so much to for so many years. They decided that they were not going to agree to another round of outrageous wage and benefit cuts and give up their pension only to see yet another management team fail and Wall Street vulture capitalists and 'restructuring specialists' walk away with untold millions of dollars.
“Throughout this long and difficult process, BCTGM members showed tremendous courage, solidarity and devotion to principle. They were well aware of the potential consequences of their actions but stood strong for dignity, justice and respect.”

Sure hope all the supposed ‘dignity, justice and respect” can feed and clothe your children, pay your rent, and ensure you family is cared for. Especially since you knew this would happen.

That's not greed, just business.
This is greed: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/201...utive-bonuses/

Same thing goes for Papa John's, Applebee's, etc, but to a lesser extent.

I live across the border from an American city so I get the local news there. There were actual droves of people swarming convenience stores and supermarkets the last few days hoarding boxes of these snack cakes. I don't get it.

I see the same thing around here, but i find that those people are selling this stuff on Craigslist and ebay for high prices. The prices they're selling them at is ridiculous.
