[SGI News]Police Officer Arrests Drunk Driver... On his Segway

JACKSON, Mich. - It wasn't exactly a high-speed pursuit. A police officer riding a Segway arrested an 18-year-old Jackson woman early Tuesday morning for drunken driving.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported the woman's car was going at least 40 miles per hour when it was spotted by an officer riding the police department's new battery-powered upright transporter around 4 a.m.

The Segway tops out around 12 1/2 miles an hour, so the officer was only able to catch up to the woman after she stopped her car. He conducted field sobriety tests and made the arrest.

But a Segway can't fit two, so he called for a patrol car to take her to jail.

The Jackson police department purchased the Segway last month for $5,500. Police said this is their first Segway-aided arrest

Why is it everything that has to do with Segways can be funny? I have no idea why but seriously, a high speed chase on Segways would be hilarious. Especially when explosions are involved.

Hahaha, It would be funnier if both of them were on segways.

I think that they should make this incident into a full-on, action-packed movie. I am sure that they can make up more in-depth storylines of the lives of the drunk teenager and the police officer. T'would be a blockbuster to remember.

Interesting story, although a bit odd. Still quite amusing nontheless.

Oh god, I live in Michigan and not too far from Jackson... Well, we certainly have interesting people in our state, we even made the news.

As for the story, I would have loved to be sitting on my front deck to see a cop on a 12 mph segway scooting along after a drunk driver going over 3 times his speed.

It's funny because it reminds me of the old sci-fi hover chariots. It's even funnier when you realize that it's a uniformed officer of the law riding it to chase someone down.

I demand laser pistols.

I just cannot stop laughing about that, they should make a COPS show about people riding Segway. You know how they have interviews in the cop car? Segway is the future!

I read the thread title so fast that I thought the person arrested for drunk driving was on the Segway. Somehow finding out the cop was riding it is even worse.

Not really that funny. Segways are meant to replace the walking. Not for pursuits...

Segways are a pathetic joke. Bike > Segway.

If you're too lazy to walk, the electric wheelchair is the way to go. Then you don't even have to stand up. How about that?!

Was he on the segway to arrest convicts on foot? Other than that, I see no reason why a uniformed officer should be on a segway.

That's not even a good reason, because bikes are cheaper and much more versatile. The segway-officer is a joke made by politicians to laugh at how much we tolerate their tax hikes.

Ha ha, I didn't laugh, but this kind of thing cracks me up a little. TVL is right though; it would have been funnier if they were both on segways. Now that would be hilarious to watch. This also reminds me of an old fable, but I can't recall the name of it right now. o_o;
