What Does The World Think Of Us?
I actually got the idea from TWGOK and Oreimo. Which, both main characters, are otakus. When I mean "us" above, I mean anime fans and otakus. I live in Malaysia and otakus are pretty open about their hobbies, boys or girls. So I never had problem adapting in the environment even if everyone around me hates anime. When I saw Oreimo, even Kirino's best friend couldn't accept that she was an otaku and she was afraid to let anyone know about it. I'm curious, did any of this happen on any of you?
Another is Keima Katsuragi from TWGOK. Does reality have to do with anime? No, it doesn't. I hate people saying "Anime and manga is fake." No, it's not fake. It exists in our hearts. I just want to hear everyone's thoughts about this.

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
I don't really understand what is meant by "anime is fake." It's just TV so of course it's "fake." It's just entertainment. I've never met someone prejudice against people who watch anime, but I personally care very little what others think, and I really don't see why they would think anything of it to begin with as long as you don't go pushing them to like what you like.

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
I only have 1 friend who likes anime and manga, but I still cop a bit of crap from him with how much I like it. Everyone else I know including friends and family have always given me a hard time about it. I have ignored it though and moved on, they have pretty much accepted it now and I still get ridiculed every now and then but it's not as bad as it was. They just don't understand how an adult can like 'cartoons'. Though, despite this, I like to stay open about my hobbies. I don't want to let other peoples opinions effect me.
The last part I'm confused about.. Anime is real? If you mean can anime relate to the real world, then yes. Of course it may be exaggerated a bit with some anime, but the meaning is still clear.
-
Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
If someone ever cops you about anime, just ask them if they watch Family Guy. Anime is largely mature on an adult level the same as American adult cartoons like Family Guy.
-
Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
Anime can be looked down upon, especially in Japan. In Oreimo, why Kirino is afraid to tell her friends is actually based on actual ongoings in Japan. Though, anime isn't real but a damn fun hobby to have IMO. Just like what you like no matter what!

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
I don't really know, because people at my age don't even know what "anime" or "otaku" means. :<_<:

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
Nobody really gives a crap- as long as you're cool about what you're doing. I know some really obnoxious anime fans though, they´re really annoying.
Also my dad is kinda forcing me to be a comic artist cos I draw anime things everywhere and he thinks its cool
-
Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
Only person who really makes fun of it and me watching it is my dad but that's pretty easy to ignore, it's whatever. As for friends, not but a few of my real life friends like it but I don't really talk with them too much about it.I don't really get judged about it, most people just give me a weird face like "Why do you watch that crap?" but it's not like I care. I'm not much influenced by other's opinions.
As for if anime is fake or not, I am afraid I don't understand the statement. It has real life things about it but in general it's about as real as CSI: or Supernatural.

What I meant was people liked to tell me, "What? Anime is fake? So, why do you like it? It doesn't even exist!" It's hard to explain. I don't know if it'd sound annoying if I say this, but anime seems real no matter how unreal or fake others seem to say it is. It exists in our lives without us knowing it. And I get really pissed if anyone tells me, "Anime is fake." I don't know why, and I can't control it no matter what. I've never forced anyone to watch animes, I just recommended them in an annoying fangirl way. Two times only, then I'll stop. But my family and friends just seem annoyed even though I don't mention a single word of "anime" from my mouth. It's weird.

Still kindof confused by what people would mean when they say it's fake or doesn't exist :/
But yeah, I watch anime a lot more than movies and tv. Only one of my best friends understands how awesome it can be. Everyone else, including my family, either say "Why do you watch that crap?" or give that look. When people ask what anime is or why I like it so much, I just say it's like any TV series, but well-drawn?

Just say "$5 says you liked Shrek."
As far as being a fan and getting looked down upon, I used to get slightly embarrassed i guess. And i'm not the only one. The military has a way of making people feel comfortable sharing the things that they'd normally try to keep secret. And most of the people i know at this base like Anime. Definitely not the kind of people you'd think would like it based off a first impression. For example, I was talking with a SEAL about Angel Beats at a bar last week.

and i'm pretty sure they'll leave you alone.

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
I tend to keep that info quiet around most people, since I'm slightly self conscience about it. But if someone asks me if I'm into it, I'll tell them straight out the truth, and if they're going to be close-minded about it, then that's there business.
Although I have to admit, I've been surprised at the large variety of people that are into it.

I don't think I've ever forced anyone to watch an anime. I'll politely ask if they wouldn't mind and if they say no then I get the message and find something else to do. Anime is more of a means of entertainment and escapism for me. If I am having a bad day then I watch anime and if I'm bored then I do the same. It's just fun to me.

I'm not shocked that they don't understand why anime is so good. I mean, you need to watch it several times over and several series to begin to appreciate it.

That's quite surprising. That goes to show that anime is widespread.

its extremely widespread.
this is just my opinion, but i think that in the states, people find it very easy to separate people into groups. And they look for the most extreme person possible to represent those groups. They look at the kid who wears anime shirts, speaks japanese, does nothing but watch anime all the time, and is socially awkward, and assume all anime fans are like that person. Americans being as concerned about their image as we tend to be, then keep anime a secret, to avoid being viewed as that guy.
Its sorta like porn, many people watch it from time to time, but you wont hear as many people talking about it.

It's not only in America. I guess it's just a known fact that humans tend to think that way. :/

true, true. people in general tend to be self conscious about their "image." Its just that personally in my world travels, i've noticed that people in the states tend to worry more than other places.

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
I never really cared what People thought of me. I wear a Kuro Neko-sama Backpack in public, and I am a thirty-four-year-old Male. X'D

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
Lol I dunno anymore. Back in highschool, there weren't too many otaku, but jocks were huge jerks.
But the local college [PSU] has it's own anime convention at the Penn Stater [where I will be working ]
So otaku are well accepted I think

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
The impression that I got over the years living in the western world is that watching anime was considered childish, as for otakus, sad or waste of space. Thats the impression that I got at least but the world of others is of no concern, so why care in the opinion of others that have no real value.

Re: What Does The World Think Of Us?
Makes me want to go to the State of Japan and find a Red Light District or a hot Spring.
