Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I, quite proudly so, still have in my possesion both Final Fantasy VII & VIII on PS1, scratch free; But, as i'm so scared to scratch them ( as they are my babies o: ) i've downloaded the virtual copys off the playstation store, so i can play them again.
Personally, i believe the other final fantasy's fail in comparison to these two... fail greatly.
I was curious, do you think either of these are the best, or do you think one of the older or more modern titles is?
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
My favorite is FFV. FFX is alright as well.
VIII's fun, and VII looks pretty good as well.
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I do like the SNES titles, but i think the whole... ultimate playability of FFVII & FVIII hooks me, i've never got round to actually doing everything as... i think that's pretty impossible, haha.

I have; anything after VIII I found incredibly hard to enjoy; Gameplay, graphics... everything was amazing, it just didn't feel like FF to me.

My personal favorites are IX, then X, then IV, then VII.
If you haven't tried IX, you should~
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I've hardly tried IX, but if its as good as you both say it is, i'll try it out, thank you! :}
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
Number one for me was Final Fantasy VIII... right from the opening fmv, it had me hooked. Squall is my favourite character out of the series as well. Final Fantasy VII was amazing the first play through, but I dunno if I could do a second one. Plus, VII is really over commercialized now, kind of knocked it down a notch for me.
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy XII; although everyone else that has played has hated it. I thought the gameplay was awsome, and I found the story to be quite amazing as well... alas, I think I`m alone on that one though. It takes my number two, with VI in my number three spot.
Worst one out of the series for me was XIII; everything about it seemed to put me off. Still played it thru to the end though...
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
My problem with VII and VIII is that it was the start of the "Lonewolf protaganist who realizes he needs the help of others to succeed". Also in VII the whole Cloud/Sephiroth story seemed like something they came up with while drunk on sake. Final Fantasy VI was my favorite due to several reasons. One, there is no real main character. Sure Terra is featured in the first half and then Celes seems to take over for the second, but you never feel like you have to have them in your party. Sabin was awesome, although I'm sure many people hurt their thumb using Bum Rush over and over. And Kefka! Kefka is the greatest FF villain ever! No sad back story, no reason to feel sorry, no complicated reasoning. Remember Michael Caine's line from The Dark Knight about how some people like to watch the world burn? That's Kefka. He does what he does because he can.
I also really liked FFIV, the characters were great and there were some really great moments, but it did suffer from what hurt the first 5 FF games: Bland final bosses. And then somehow here we are many years later and they did it again in FFXIII.
Oh, and another reason FFVIII isn't one of my top games is due to the worlds worst magic system ever designed. Draw magic from enemies? Seriously?
And Laguna needed more screen time.
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I loved ff7. Although, I can see the over commercialization. but I ate all that up :P
I hate it when people reveal spoilers of it all the time :'(
my ff8 crashed whenever I got to a certain stage, so I'll never know :'(
playing ff9 atm, but not enjoying it that much. I appreciate the throwback to the earlier games, but I reckon it's just my personal taste that has labelled it as one of the inferior ones (and their heads are massive! :P)
As for the originals, I never remember which is which, but I really enjoyed the one that had Cecil in it.
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
VII was the first one I'd ever played so it'll always be high up in my list, but gotta say IV was the one I enjoyed the most. VIII was ok, but ended up kinda 'meh' in my books. I have been enjoying XIII somewhat, though, and XIII-2 is said to be better so I'm hoping for an upswing in quality.

My all-time favorite is FFVIII! I love the realistic setting in the beginning with the Garden and trials and later on it became so epic because of the plot twists.
I want only to mention the orphanage, it came out of the blue and shocked me! The characters are all loveable except Selphie she is kind of irritating at some points *hust* Timber *hust*.
All in all I'm in love with this game. It was my first RPG and my first Final Fantasy.
~loyal~
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I've only completed XII, XIII and XIII-2. And I really liked them, one of the few who did hehe.
I did buy VII on the PS Store, but I haven't managed to finish it it yet, I got bored.
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
@Des FFVII really picks up after you leave Midgar. As for VIII, it can go die. Till XIII it was the worst in the series. Now it's third behind XIII-2. FFII is fourth but that's mostly because of the leveling system. Otherwise it's a solid game. For best I'd go VII, IX, IV and VI.

The Dragonball Z of Final Fantasy, actually no, the DBZ of RPGs.
We thought it was the coolest because we were young (while is still good) but in reality is overrated.
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
I liked the card game in VIII
Re: Final Fantasy VII & VIII; Best of the series?
Also, what I noticed is that those like XIII were the ones who imported it...like 95% of them.
The haters have the English version, so maybe that has some effect. It may sound silly but if unwritten statistics proves so then it could be so.

To an extent. One of the biggest issues with VII is the relatively poor translation. Fix that up a bit and certain things that can be confusing are made clearer. Not to mention it had one of the greatest death twist of all time. Though the main reason it's first is because it's what got me into RPGs as a kid. If I hadn't I'd probably have the same video game interests as my brothers which are FPSes. Instead over my lifetime 80% of all the games I've played have been RPGs. I'm also heavily into things like PnP D&D.

Um, FFVII and FFVIII are considered among the best because they were popular, had memorable stories and scenes, and introduced many people to the world of final fantasy. To me however, I thought FVII was the best of all time.
