It is japanese animation aimed towards everyone from small children to grown up adults depending on what show you watch, it is a very broad genre. It sometimes gets a bad rep for weird stuff but that is only a part of anime so do not be fooled! The style and themes of anime and the way it is done is in my amateurish opinion rather different from the western cartoons and also their live action tv shows.

Its definitely difficult to put into words for me. I think IluvAllison did a fantastic job in giving a well rounded and correct definition.
To properly respond the the OP I would say, to me Anime is a animated movie, show or series that is drawn! not the CG garbage that animation is becoming. Also beyond that, Anime has great detail and depth. Its not just a cool story or powerful characters. There are deep emotional turmoils or physical traumas for the characters to overcome. and there is love involved. Not always mushy love but sometimes that too.
IDK if that covers everything Anime is but I think for me that is a solid foundation to go with when trying to explain what Anime is.
I'd say it's Japanese animation, some deprived from Japanese comics called Manga, and some created originally as an animation. But first, I'd say that anime is my life. It's something that lives with me since my childhood. So pretty much, it's something beautiful. It covers many genres, and it's not cartoon. Many mature themes are included in anime, but also many fun themes for kids. So, anime is for everyone who loves it, no matter the age.
Anime is the Animated version of an Manga or on it's own.
It can be adapted by the Manga Style with Color!
From my perspective it is the most Awesome thing in the World!!!

First and foremost, anime is an artform. It isn't a genre, it's a media all its own. It provides a fancinating view of characters and places and stories we can't see in the real world, and has so much to give in terms of lessons and emotions and thoughts and feelings. They all have heart, whether they be for children or an older audience, whether they be humour or romance or adventures or fantasies, they possess the ability to entertain and entrigue viewers. They are in no way beneath live-action shows, and in some ways, can be seen as better. The only limitations in anime are those which we set for ourselves or those which the writers and animators set for themselves. It offers so much creativity and can pull people down emotional journeys they can't have anywhere else, and that is what makes it what it is.
Anime is just another medium through which to tell a story or get a message across.
It is a medium that is capable of expressing that which cannot be expressed through other mediums. For example, it can do what a fillm cannot do without great, great cost (though it still costs a lot to make anime).
However, often a story that is told through anime could be told using something else. Whether it was worth making those types of stories into anime is up to the viewer.
So when there's a story that could really only be told through anime, that's when you can really think "Ah, anime is great".
