Re: Favorite Animation Style
Hm... Favorite animation, huh. Well, from your list, I'd choose the first and the third choice. Most importantly, it must NOT be untidy. I really hate untidy animation. When it's messy, it totally distracts me, and I will get kinda irrirated. But if the story line is good, I will always keep going. But most anime that is not deprived from any manga, the art is normally more unique and tidy. Most manga based anime are really awesome too. As long it's hard work from the crew, it'll always be lovable.
Re: Favorite Animation Style
Tidy is a good word for this discussion. I agree that is an important aspect to quality and likable animation.

Personally I would classify Naruto as a cleaner animation style. The colors are very vivid and rich and it looks as if the entire scene is active or alive. Its different than NGE or Ghost in the Shell (what I call gritty) because in those Anime there are times where the scenes are less active to clarify the point of emphasis.

I agree but Cowboy Bebop did it and thats considered a master piece. Some people actually applaud that aspect of the show. I realize everyone has their own opinion but thats an opinion that surprises me. I liked Cowboy Bebop but I didnt understand why they did that.
Has anyone seen this show on Adult Swim

The show itself may not be horrible but I hate the animation to the point I wouldnt watch it without some serious persuasion. Like Sarah Michelle Gellar will :censored: me kind of persuasion haha.

Kyoto is waaay up there for me as well, a very close one to this as well is SHAFT anime studios.
Kyoto comes across to me as more a fine art, painterly at times and lots of eye candy.
SHAFT anime is kind of the polar opposite, crisp, graphic, and not afraid to take a chance when it comes to design, direction, and overall look!
I love these two the most!
Re: Favorite Animation Style
Yeah. Honestly, i really hate the whole 'computer generated, half 3d, half 2d' kind of style. That's the reason i'm not going near High School of the Dead for a while. That and the fact that half the time all that's on the screen is tits and other private areas. I'm better than that. But that's besides the point! I just don't like it. When they try to make the characters 3D sometimes just doesn't look right. I prefer the 'clean' style... Or what i think is clean. I'm not sure what you mean by that exactly. I like the styles of K-On... And also Angel Beats. But really it all depends on what type of anime it is. With K-On, and other light, funny type anime's you usually get that sort of 'clean' feel.
I really don't know what I'm talking about anymore though.
I did like the style of Neon Genesis Evangelion!
What do I like!!!??
God... Dammit.
Re: Favorite Animation Style
I like series that just bleed style; GAINAX's original series tend to top the list, with Production IG and Madhouse making frequent visits. Style works in a lot of ways - it could be just wild art direction, animation that makes thrilling use of perspective and motion to back scenes and not just for the sake of it, or rich environmental design done in great detail or with a vivid palette. This also extends, outside of animation, to series that make wonderful use of music (NOIR, BECK, any .hack series, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, etc.), though that's outside of OP's topic.
FLCL, Panty & Stocking, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Ghost in the Shell, Eden of the East, The Sky Crawlers, Cowboy Bebop, Redline, The Tatami Galaxy, Katanagatari, Bakemonogatari, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Dennou Coil, Samurai Champloo, 30 Centimeters per Second, House of Five Leaves, Mobile Suite Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, and Princess Mononoke.
Re: Favorite Animation Style
i want something diverse in context to character design and various environmental settings.

Im with ya on hating the 3d stuff. I hate all the extra shading that is involved and I dont need or want everything outlined in shadows. It just looks wrong to me
Re: Favorite Animation Style
Yeah, I agree, cell animation is pretty good. But I've also got to say I love the way Bones' style, for most of their works at least. My personal favorite though would be Soul Eater, the way it can be so bright and so dark at the same time.
