Finding out your friend is a furry is like finding out your friend is into horse porn. You know he's still a good guy at heart, but dealing with his newly discovered interest is quite a ways out of your area of familiarity and is fairly awkward to deal with in conversation. You get used to it after awhile though, and the lampooning can commence.
Well I see it as two categories, one is where the just like to pretend they're animals and all, kind of like people that like to cosplay, the other is the creepy one where they are into animal/human hentai-ish like pr0n and take the "I'm a fox" thing way to seriously.
I don’t mind it to a certain degree but once it crosses the line it gets pretty darn creepy.
But I am a firm believer in the saying to each there own so I will not judge.
Its different than the usual stuff though
How is it different from the 'usual' stuff? And what exactly constitutes as 'usual stuff'?
The fact is, it's just as different as someone who likes cosplaying as girls (even though they're a guy) or even the whole lolita thing. Actually, I think furries are more tame than that. >.>
edit
lolita? or is it lolicon? the anime children thing? >_>;
Its lolicon and you kinda described what the usual stuff is
Which is a little off. To be frank, furry fandom is the appreciation and interest of anthropomorphic animal characters and furries are people are people who are very attracted to this. It could involve pretending to be an animal on occasion (such as role-playing at a con), but, technically, it can also involve a simple love of anthropomorphic animals. Pretending to be an animal, whether its just for temporary role-playing or an everyday thing, including dressing up (in anyway) is really a subculture of furry fandom rather than a defining characteristic of it.
But speaking of pretending to be an animal, I can't say anything bad about it, since I do it myself all the time. I pretty much reside in Otherkin territory (let the flame war begin because I know its coming).:p
Hey we all have our own things you with your role playing wolfgirl90 and I well I just collect naruto and Full Metal Alchemist manga and random animes
^ exactly.
So to us, roleplaying as a fox is to you collecting naruto manga.
One time I pretended to be a dog when I was bored it was kinda wierd though
It depends. I was talking about being flamed for the whole Otherkin thing, since I am one. See, in the world of furry fandom, there is a controversy surrounding Otherkin, whether they are part of the fandom, an offshoot of it or if there is absolutely no connection at all (or rather, that there shouldn't be).
Otherkin believe that they have a sympathetic, or even spiritual, connection with an animal (a real one or fantasy one). Because of this, most of them exhibit animal qualities on a regular, everyday basis versus pretending to be an animal or having a mere interest in anthropomorphic animal characters. Some people, even some furries, think that this is taking it too far.
hmmmmm interesting stuff this be I never knew that otherkin was an offshoot or that it even existed
@wolfgirl90 All I can say is this:
There are worse things amongst the furry community than that ... so why some of them choose to whine about that is completely beyond me.
In related news, I'm probably very similar to you on the Otherkin thing. I'm not too certain though ^_^;
Every community has their own variety of a branch which they may dislike such as some anime lovers dislike the more x rated variety as it makes all anime appear as though its a part of that genre (trust me I've met a few people who think that)
After all there are some people out there in the world I bet who'd sacrifice their first born child to a god who resides within a volcano to appease the spirit by throwing the child into the crater.
There are also paedophiles.
Guess what I am more comfortable with?
/troll
I'm guessing it ain't with the paedophiles then
Otherkin are fine, it's only when they try to smother it on a social sandwich and ask for jelly in return; that it gets annoying.
From what I've learned of otherkin, some even CLAIM to be sharing a soul with mythical creatures, like some offshoot of DID (Dissociative identity disorder). Dragons, Angels and even Vampires- which than becomes a whole other ball game, as who's to say vampires 'would' have souls, still, even after they were damned? CANON ISSUES. o.o
But in the end, it's fine as long as you are respectful in your ways about it. Hell, I believe my ex was basically Otherkin and I had accepted her with love in tow. I guess all I am really trying to express is that it irks me when people try to slap it on a sign and constantly wave it in my face. =ooo
Kinda like religion boasting its the only way but even though I am religious I go with the theory of God creating the universe but the Earth evolved over centuries of evolution
