First WWE Superstar in history comes out of the closet.
During an interview, Darren Young whom is currently working for WWE under a tag team with Titus O' Neil made history. Earlier we had a NBA guy come out of the closet and announce that he was in fact gay and Darren Young has just made history for being the first official WWE superstar to come out of the closet. I have MAD respect for the guy and his bravery is something I can respect. Although I am straight, my respect for this guy for doing something so many people could not do has gone through the roof and as I said he made history with this breaking news that infact made the news on my television. I always felt like straight, bi and gay people alike should be treated equal and I hope Darren Young gets the respect he deserves. It seems like most or all of the WWE superstars applaud this guy for this historic announcement, and I hope Darren Young has a bright future ahead of him in WWE and life.
WWE fan or not, this is a groundbreaking moment in sports entertainment history and it should be noted that this guy is an amazing wrestler. Should he be pushed for this? Its tough to call, BUT either way I hope WWE doesn't pull the illegal route and bury him for this. If so, he could easily sue the company.

i don't follow sports at all, and i follow professional wrestling even less, but this is a step in the right direction for equality. hopefully there comes a time when we as a society don't feel that being gay should make front-page news.

I totally agree. This was a great step in the right direction for equality and I just hope WWE doesn't do anything to bury his character for this. I believe the fans will get behind him for his bravery so maybe for this brave move alone he'll get the push he deserves? The push idea is obviously not the main reasoning for this thread, but it'd be nice.
If WWE does do something, instant sue and win for Darren Young.

Not really sure if this is all that new though...

lol No, I'm just being silly. But still, many periods and characters in WWE have been gayer and more flamboyant than Liberache at a Gay Pride Parade. Still, they're straight for the most part (so they say).

Seems like a gimmick to me to be honest. I've seen some odd storylines and remember that WWE likes to make certain wrestlers come off as stupid if they aren't your biggest fan.

Oh. Yeah I know! If this was the 90s Darren Young would probably get involved in some stupid storyline after his announcement.

Who's to say that's not what he's doing now? Or even that now that he's come out, they'll make some story thing for him to deal with over the fact that he's gay? It wasn't long ago they're doing a Rich Texan (JBL) versus Everyday Latino (Eddie Guererro).

I thought Goldust was one of the first gay wrestlers to come out, didn't he even have a falling out with his dad due to his cross dressing?

I doubt WWE would make up a storyline of a guy coming out of the closet OR them making fun of him via storyline due to his bravery because WWE got sued a couple years back and can no longer use those sort of themes in a negative light. Plus WWE is huge on be a star and not a bully campaign right now.
I could see Darren Young cutting a face promo though and them using this in a positive light so fans get behind him. Either way, I believe Darren Young.

I'll look into it. The sources could be inaccurate, but almost everything lists him as the first.

Hasn't stopped them before, and I doubt it'll stop them now.

I agree WWE has done some really dumb things overtime and still do dumb things nowadays, but since the lawsuit WWE "cannot" use the gay theme in a negative light. If they do they will get sued automatically and lose. I see them using this in a positive light for him though or at the very worst have his partner beat him up after his face promo, but having Darren Young winning in the matches that follow. I mean, they COULD throw Darren Young under the bus, but WWE would get sued by that pro gay rights company, sued by Darren Young and even John Cena who is a close friend of Darren Young would never treat the company with respect ever again. Do you see WWE wanting to get sued, losing their main money making guy and being shown on multiple news stations as against gays?

Still doesn't stop them from having someone play a bigot, and make the bigot look bad.

They could do that, but Darren Young would get the win over him. Most likely at least.

Eh, he'd win some, lose some; ultimately Mr. Bigot would come out against him, get hated by everyone, get a lacky or two that agrees, interrupt Darren's fights and possibly cause him to lose a few, show up here and there to beat him up outside of a regular match, get a match set-up between Darren and the bigot, have the bigot win, set-up a future match at a big time PPV event, repeat prior foolishness until said PPV event, and have Darren beat the bigot at the PPV event (or have Darren lose to drum this cycle up again for however long).

In most cases I'd agree, but the bigot storyline as you may be unaware of is risky. Really risky! I've been a longterm fan and always keep updated with the news revolving WWE. This isn't the 90s - 2010 WWE anymore and recently the storylines involving this kind of stuff has fallen since being sued last. The bigot storyline may indeed happen, but Darren Young will NOT lose cleanly. You need to remember that this goes further than an actual storyline since Darren Young is indeed gay and not just some storyline. With that said, it makes it that much more risky to go through with it. I can see it being a 50/50 shot with it happening, but WWE will make sure that Darren Young never goes under, at least cleanly.

Keyword: Cleanly. Bad guys never win cleanly. Not since the day's of "The Spoiler". They cheat, they win, the Good guys get mad and challenge them, they cheat and win, then the good guys get smart and make it so they can't easily cheat and the bad guys lose. It is risky, but so long as the bad guy is facing all the adversity and the Darren's only problem is the bad guy, they'll be set. They still have to thread lightly, but that's nothing new for ol' Vince McMahon. He'll he's been the bad guy for so long it's not even funny.

I can confirm that he is not. He is married and has kids.

I think Brock Lesnar beat HHH cleanly twice in the last year, but that may be it.
I just hope it goes well man and lets hope WWE doesn't make the wrong move.

Re: First WWE Superstar in history comes out of the closet.
Well done to Darren Young, I say. I've recently gotten back into WWE again and I hope they don't do anything negative against Young's character for his sexuality. I mean that's just stupid if they do, it's completely disrespectful. Although, saying that, we've all read/ watched the storyline where Orton made gestures saying to Rey Mysterio that Eddie Guerroro was in hell. So if that can happen, it wouldn't be completely bizarre to imagine a character picking on a gay wrestler.
Just a shame because WWE have an opportunity now to help make it clear that sexuality is not just meant to be hetero.

No storyline yet. Darren Young has been picking up wins though which is great for him.

I find this mentality bizarre. Why is it that if a man who doesn't fit whatever demented stereotype you have of heterosexual males, then he must be gay or ashamed? Also, why do I hear this from promoters of sexual preference equality so often?
It's as if people still want to ridicule straight guys for doing "gay" things, but they don't want to offend the gay community. There are plenty of flamboyant straight guys suppressing their personalities so they don't have to deal with having their sexuality put into question. I've been called gay and I know other guys who have been called gay for ridiculous reasons. Gay behavior is preferring sex with people of the same sex exclusively, and yet somehow so many benign non-sexual behaviors have become "a gay thing".
-
Re: First WWE Superstar in history comes out of the closet.
is THAT what gay is? sh*t, i thought it was preferring cinnamon toothpaste.
i watch and enjoy UFC so no, sweaty men pinning eachother or grasping eachothers bodies doesn't bother me at all, nor does it strike me as gay. that comment was an off hand witicism, the fact that you took it literally isn't my problem.
and yes, a man, whther gay or straight, that wears femenine makeup and puts on a tutu just to fill a persona for the sake of wrastling should be ashamed.
i don't know where you got the idea that i'm "afraid of offending the gay community". yes i am an advocate of equality, and i'd never insult a homosexual man just because he's homosexual, but equality is a double-edged sword - gays want and deserve to be treated like straight men and women, but no one is afraid to insult them. if you can't accept being the butt of a joke, even one that doesn't play on your sexuality, without playing the "gay-hater" card, you don't deserve equality.
hmm i think i went off topic but still made heroicly valid points. all is well.
