What was your first programming language?
Sorry if this thread was already made before; couldn't find one after an extensive (read: one) search.
So, this was topic that came up at work, where I use none of my programming skills at all, but the topic was on the first formally trained language. For one coworker, it was COBOL in the late eighties, for myself it was C# in the early 2000s.
That said, I felt that was too restrictive of a question, languages for which you received formal training with, so I want to expand the question to ask what the first language yalls ever made a serious investment into learning was. I personally don't care between compiled or interpreted, sequential or OOP; if you typed it and it made a computer do something, then it's programming to me.
So, to answer that for myself, Java was the first language I ever invested a serious amount of time into...which I then abandoned for 10 years for C#, and because my job wanted it for some satanic reason, VB. This was until the former became too niche and the latter was finally realized as the joke it is.
Thought of an obvious follow up question, what languages do yalls know to an extent that you would call yourself "proficient"? For me, it's a depressingly short list: C#, Java (only recently with going back to school), Obj C (>_>), VB.NET(<_< <_<), Python 2.x, Ruby, JS(it counts), ASP (>_>), Quick Basic(yes really).

Re: What was your first programming language?
I have no formal training in any language. I'm self taught. I think my first language I invested any serious amount of time in was C, C++ or possibly Java. This was way back when I was like 12, so I don't really remember.
My strongest languages are- C (I've written a C compiler)
- C++
- Java (I'm a Java developer by profession, unfortunately)
- Javascript/HTML5/DOM stuff

Re: What was your first programming language?
My mother taught me C when I was a child. I later taught myself C++ and took a C++ course in university for an easy A. I reinforced my C/C++ skills by writing lots of battle.net bots, a fully-featured IRC bot, a couple battle.net server clones, and a Linux device driver. My job requires C++ so I mostly work with that.
I'm also knowledgeable in Fortran and Java (rusty). These are my third and second language respectively.

Re: What was your first programming language?
Basic ... and not VB ... but old MSX-BASIC v1.0

Re: What was your first programming language?
I began with Lua.
After that i started using Python due to its calculation power!
But i got into java 3 days ago because its easy and more compatible!

I hope you mean in general and not that Java is easier than Lua; cause then I'd have to call you weird :V

I'd call Java easier than Lua. Perhaps not easier to learn, but easier to use once you've mastered the basics. It's extremely hard to make mistakes in Java, because the compiler is a Nazi, and it's easy to write fault tolerant code.

Re: What was your first programming language?
Visual Basic.....so far its the only language i know any of. I am currently in Visual Basic class. Next semester i will be in C++ and can't wait as its the one i will look into almost religiously. I really do hope to be a programmer for a career.
also @Tarkenfire , I love the use of Y'all. It is hard to find someone that uses yall in a sentence. I cant help but use it due to my southern upbringing.

Re: What was your first programming language?
For me my first love was old BBC BASIC on the old acorn machines, got quite handy at that.
These days I'm quite proficient and trained in VB, although i've picked up a basic "hang" of java through various game scripts like InformScript and NeverwinterScript. I am looking to broaden my horizons to actionscript and java eventually, once i've got bored of VB.

I´m very good at html it was my first hard to learn though haha

Re: What was your first programming language?
Back in college I learned assembly language and programmed some intel processors like the 80188. Thats way low level, like one step above machine code. That was mainly for my junior project, which the minimum requirement was for it to be programmable clock and it was like 10+ pages of code just for a clock. I forgot all that real quick lol! Also did turbo C and C++ but by now I have pretty much forgotten all of that.

Re: What was your first programming language?
Javascript, probably. Although i've only been able to code very simple scripts.

It's ok brah, mopst people forget assembly after college, just on principle.
Anyone who willingly uses assembley obviously likes talking to machines, when skynet is online these are people we cant trust not sell us out to the terminators

Re: What was your first programming language?
In uni, I started off with C++ and moved on to others like Python, Prolog, Java etc

Re: What was your first programming language?
My first programming language is c and after that i used to enhance my programming skills with the c++. Now i am very familiar with the html language, it is very easy to learning and understanding.

Re: What was your first programming language?
the first programming language I learned was C++
but at the same time my friend told me about java and how to create a website. in the end in my first year college I started to learn java, html, php, mysql :D

Re: What was your first programming language?
I'm still learning C++ in my free time, so C++ will be my answer to all 3 questions.

Re: What was your first programming language?
First progammin' language that I've encountered would be QBasic.

Re: What was your first programming language?
My first programming language would be Lua.
There was this kid game called Roblox where you can build your own game (a game within a game lol). So to actually make stuff work, you'll need to make scripts to make stuff work, so Roblox worked under Lua.
I tried to learn, but failed horribly.

Re: What was your first programming language?
Pascal was my first. Followed shortly by VB.NET. Both at high school.
Moved onto web development where I picked up PHP via LAMP. At university I briefly went into C#, ASP.NET, Java, embedded C and C++.
I'd like to continue with C/C++.
