Disney's $4 Billion Acquisition Of Marvel

Thus went a fairly typical Twitter reaction (this one from @jgibbard) to the news that Disney is paying $4 billion to buy Marvel Entertainment and its library of 5,000 characters -- including Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

Trying to predict what this deal is going to mean for Marvel, for comics, for superhero movies, or for Disney is pure speculation at this point, but the immediate problem is one of perception: put simply, Marvel has a cool factor and Disney doesn't. People who love Spider-Man do not necessarily see themselves as close cousins of people who love Donald Duck just because there's drawing involved.

My co-worker says they probably just want to get the movie rights and make some animated TV shows, but all in all it won't change much. He used Pixar as an example, they were bought by Disney but they're still really popular and make amazing movies.

Disney is an evil empire.
but not only are they taking over stories that have much too great an impact in the world of entrainment but also they're practically condemning them too a strong boycott by loyal fans that will feel Disney will demean the characters stories with plots directly channel towards younger audiences basically making them "family series" but they will also ruin the well created highly stylize portrait of moral response and emotions when confronted by hardship in the "what if" of sci fi stories.
is bullcrap.

Also I don't want to fight mikey in the next marvel vs. capcom.

this is an outrage. I don't want to see if donald feels carnage could be more nice to wolverine. have you read marvel comics the stories there are way too far out there for Disney you could make a whole pschicological journal on the moral chooices that take place on the captain america series.

Well, in all fairness to Disney, all economic empires are evil. Monopolies, or things that come close to them stifle diversity and innovation, and create unhealthy markets.

As long as they leave the comics continuity alone and don't slap Disney morality all over it, and don't put the disney logo on every TPB it should be fine.

I hope that this is correct- I think Pixar still stayed lovely with their films ^_^ But still my heart sinks. Disney owns so many things- like ESPN 2 (random, I think!!!).

I think Kingdom Hearts is great, especially because of the Final Fanatsy characters so Disney and Square Enix mixing wasn't so bad. However, I don't think this will be at all the same.

Isn't things like spider man and stuff with Universal Studios? Disney's big rival? Because you go to Universal's theme park and you have the Spider Man ride and such.

Who knows. Next there will be a huge monorail across Orlando linking Disney and Universal together.. >.>

4billion dollars... god damned... i wouldnt blame marvel if they agreed to sell buut i just cant help but think wots going to happen to the comics... and im not talking about the old school characters golden age silver age characters most of them suck, but i speak of the comics for mature audiences like Deadpool or comics like Immortal Weapons or the Dark Reign and noir series of comics what about Guardians of the Galaxy! what about incognito! GAH!!! secret warriors whatll happen to them! oh god -_- what about sinister spider man! what about mister negative and the hood!
