Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Why people don't like to discuss age?????
When i am talking to some people and say how old something is, they then say "lets not mention age again" or something like that. why?
for example: I was saying to this guy that the film The Mask is 17 years old already, that guy responding by saying "gosh that makes me feel so old, let's not talk about ages anymore" why people react this way to topic of age or bhow old something is, are they ashamed of their aging?

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Because we all become ant-lizard at some point, and we don't like to be reminded about it.
OR it's because... I dunno, I've never heard anyone say this before. Maybe because most of my friends are already in the ant-lizard stage?

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Older generations prefer older ways/things. Younger people prefer newer ways/things. Younger people think older ways are lame. Some older people become self-conscious because of this. So age is now an issue to them. This, however, affects women more than men.

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
I have no idea why, but it's so annoying. I have friends that are one single year older and they KEEP COMPLAINING that they're getting old. I tell them to come back in 50 years and repeat the same thing.

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Whenever it's with someone around my own age or older, I'm fine with it. But whenever I discussed age with my niece (who is 17), she kept referring to me as an "old man." Ever since I hit the big 20, I have been a bit more self-conscious about my age. I dunno. Maybe people just don't like being considered "old" when they really haven't reached the tip of the iceberg yet. I think people who didn't accomplish all that they could in their childhood will feel more self-conscious about it when they're a bit older. All I can say now is, don't measure life in years. You could live to be 80 years old and not accomplish anything, and someone else could have died in their 30's and achieve a lot in their life, and what have you gained?
-
Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
It could also be that people don't like being reminded how old they are because it brings up the notion that, yes you will die and you are getting closer to that point. Or maybe they just keep thinking of all the things they wanted to do and haven't.(maybe they think of both too).

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
age is a taboo for some people, because they don't want to be reminded that they have done less of what they set out to do....
it's alright though, if they don't want to talk about it, then there's nothing we can do about it...
it's their prerogative...
if you ask, how old I am... i'll answer the question truthfully...
but for the meantime, i know that I will always be 20 years old at heart and won't be budging from that spot.... hahahaha....

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Over the internet, people don't like to reveal their identity; therefore, they can be whoever they want without judgement or hassle. They can be someone they're not, they can lie without bounds, and most of all, they can escape the discrimination of their personal lives.
I personally don't give a damn about my age or who I am, the only difference between my online self and my offline self is that I'm not afraid to call someone out on the internet, yet in reality, you've got to be careful who you say such things to.
I'm sixteen tomorrow, and I'm just an angsty teen who prefers not to make too many friends.
Now you know~*~*~*~

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
I have observed that young people (especially high teens) like to pretend to complain that they don't want to talk about their age because it makes them feel old, in order to (ironically) sound older than they actually are. It's like people who pretend to complain about not getting enough sleep because they think being an insomniac is cool, or like how you have nothing to worry about from a person who constantly brags about how "crazy" and mentally unstable they are.

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Yeh why people saying they are crazy when they are not?

I have never meet anyone who doesn't want to discuess age like that, so I can't really answer your question.
On the other hand I have meet a bunch of people who doesn't want to talk about their weight. THAT subject is the deathly serious one. haha!

I am one of those people that you find annoying... blast!
I am perhaps not 'old' in that sentence but I still complain about my age and such because... well I just think that time is passing me by to fast. Everything just goes to fast. It seems just like yesterday my little sister still played with her Barbie dolls and now she is in the upper secondary school and starts to look at boys *cough cough*. All this, with time that is rushing me by, is making me thinking about the days that have been and that makes me feel sentimental and... well, I guess we can say that I kind of feel like an 'old lady'. xD Sure, I love the life I am having now, but I still miss those old days. That's why I still complain.

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
I adore talking about my age. Simply because I'm almost 20 but I look like I'm15. Seriously I look younger than my boyfriends little sister and she's about 15. I keep thinking she's my age but she's not. Hang around me and I'll surely add a few mental years to your age. I always think people are older than they are because compared to me they look older than me. x.x

One time this salesman knocked on our door and he asked me if I were the "lady of the house". *cough cough cough cough* x.x
I think I have to stop wearing coats and such, they are not good for me. haha!

Maybe they just wants attention?
One of my friends also use to walk around and bragging about how 'crazy' she is and so on and so on... but honestly, she is when it comes down to it, a really shy person who is far away from the even word 'crazy' since she cares all to much of what people actually thinks of her. I belive she just walks around and keeps talking about how 'crazy' she can be sometimes because she actually wish she were, but now is not. Also, I think it's for the attention as I mentioned before.
How much attention does a person gets if she just stands and are to embarresed to do certain things? Answer: not much.
How much attention does a person gets if she in conversation with people, that doesn't know her that very well, claims to be more "crazy"?. Answer: more then before. x)

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
None of my younger teaches have problems discussing their age but the older ones do, this is why I always ask "How young are you?" instead of old, it probably makes them feel better. o.o
-
Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
I don't have a problem discussing about my age. Actually, its kind of funny to surprise people with my age because I don't look like it one bit. I would be told "wow you're old", I just smile and reply, "that means you'll wipe my butt." :'D
-
Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Usually I don't like to talk about my age mostly because I'm the only under-18 in every group of people I hang out with (3 more months argh). After they learn that I'm still 17 I'm treated like a kid and most of the time am left alone back home because everyone leaves to go to the pub.

If you're born in the 90's, your opinion doesn't count. Period.

Hurray! ;D

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Highly depends on the situation, online it could easily be ID concerns or that people get "ideas" which would be irrelevant, some people arnt interested in engaging if you know what i mean.
On the other hand in person it is a reminder of their own age and how much of their life is gone. Nobody really lives their dreams in this kind of world

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
Woah! Okay folks. Let's stop mentioning age before the deep ones arise once more and lay waste to our planet.

Re: Why people don't like to discuss age?????
On forums, I've seen many people use age as a basis to judge others. For instance, if someone admits they are a teen, others automatically make a judgement based on that.
It could also have to do with what's acceptable in different cultures.

Nah, judging from all the various types of ages on the people saying those things and the actual fact that they also have been coming from different places... I don't think it has so much to do with different cultures, it's just an old oppress-technique where you point at someones age, sex or misspellings exc to make that persons opinions to seem smaller / less worth since that person is 'smaller' / less worth.
Like you are young = no experiences = my opinion is worth more.
or You're a male, you can't have any opinions about insert-typical-female-issue-here.
An popular 'move' I have seen time to time in different forums is that people are pointing out someone elses spellings. If someone isn't so good at spelling they can completely ignore what that person just wrote (in opinions or in arguments) and instead write something like: Well atleast I know how to spell somethingsomething! Or you know other oppressing technique could be something as simple as coming late to a meeting, sigh when someone is talking, interrupt exc.
Yeah well like my misspellings change my opinions or makes them less worth? Don't think so ~. You should just know how angry I become when reading comments like that, specially since I know how one of my old friends suffered from bad self-reliance before due to her dyslexia.
[some days ago in another forum people where wroting 'But little girl' to me... a classic]
.
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...MLcgcDiq1A12bg <--- classic.
Anyway, old oppressing-techiques is a word-I-cannot-write-here-without-a-warning. They are just immature and plain bad. In a debate it should be the arguments that matters, not someones age. If you think someone don't have so much to say since they don't have so much lifeexperience then you then
1) Younger people then you can still have more lifeexperience then you.
2) Instead of trying to 'push down' that person by marking on 'your opinions doesn't count since you are to young!' then use that 'fact' as an argument against that person instead - but in a nice way. Even if someone doesn't have as much lifeexperience - their opinion still counts.

If it's too loud you're too old
