Not really. hiragana/katakana are the syllables. kind of like the alphabet in English, but not really.

like the vowels are A （あ）, I　（い）, U　（う）, E　（え）, O　（お）

the rest are just a combination of those 5. like with "K", you get: ka （か）, ki （き）, ku （く）, ke （け）, ko （こ）, so on and so forth. The kanji have no dialect, but rather, they show an "idea". like 空　"sora" （そら）　ｓｋｙ

regarding your Japanese issue, I would highly recommend learning the hiragana and katakana before practicing kanji.

AT LEAST YOU'RE NOT KI-- Kickboxing, because that's a hard sport to master. :P
