Think you only need a server to keep it up. Otherwise direct connect should work.

I could maybe use my laptop but it's not set up at the moment. Might be a good idea to try find a few more to play with at the same time, too.

I don't know of any public servers. I usually run one myself or play on a friends' private server whenever I feel like playing it with anybody.
