I'm confused about Mello

I've watched the series a few times and love it, but every time I get to the part at the very end in which Near says something like "Individually, we could not have bettered L, but together, Mello and I can equal or even surpass him." I get confused as to how Mello helped at all. I just found this site, so I figured I would ask. Thanks =)

Well, Mello, Near and L were all brought up with Wammy. Near and Mello would compete with each other, both thinking that they were a better detective than the other. I think what Near is saying is that if they both work together, they would be an extremely strong force... I may be wrong though XD

The thing is, Mello and Near as separate detectives are not on-par with L - they have their strengths, but also weaknesses. I think what is implied is that by working together, they can cancel out their weaknesses with the others' strengths, thus creating a force better than what they can achieve on their own.

I'm thinking he asked how they helped at all. I'm pretty sure he knows they worked together.

Now, this is how he helped though:

Mello, as you probably know, kidnapped Takuda and made her strip and all. Takuda had a hidden piece of the notebook in her bra-strap. She killed him, and when she done that, Light planned to kill her, which he wrote her name in the hidden piece he keeps. Since X-Kira(Mikami) though Light would be in a tight spot, like Light said, he also wrote her name in his notebook, revealing it. Therefore, they switched the pages in both fake and real notebook.
