One of those rare series that perfectly balanaces action, plot, and character development and at the same time exploring deeper more intelectual themes. Truly a triumph of not only anime but the entertainment industry in general.
Hey, it beats reality television.

Rurouni Kenshin is second.
I agree with the man's first statement. Eva is the greatest anime ever. No question. There has yet to be a series to come close to topping.
But I must disagree entirely with his second statement. Kenshin should not even be mentioned in the same thread as Eva.

What? It's a truly great series. Whats wrong with Kenshin?
Anyway, moving swiftly on...
Anyone read the Manga done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (the character designer for the series)? In many ways it is actually better. It is told almost entirly from Shinji's perspective instead of third person, thus giving you a much more intimate look into his mind. If you thought the series messes with your head, then it is imperitive that you read the manga. It really helps make sense of things. And since it's done by someone who worked on the series, it's only a different interpretation rather than a different version. There are massive differences though, so even if you've seen the series through a hundred times (as is my case) it's still worth every penny you spend on it if your a fan.

Eva is good and I love the girls in that one though some times it seems on the verge of becoming a philosophical debate on what is real and what is just a giant cyborg robot

It is a philosophical debate. Thats exactly what it is, and that's why I consider it the best anime ever made. Wasn't it obvious what the true intention of the series was? It's not about the robots or the angels, it's the human drama. Havn't you ever wondered why the entire series tokk place only in one city? If it was just an interesting take on the old fashioned disaster theme then it would have give you a world wide perspective. This plot, in which the entire fate of the human race is in jepordy, is centered around a set of characters you can count on your hands. Anno himself, when asked a complex question about the relationship between the Angels and Evas, responded, "The Angels and Evas? It was never about them." The entire series was really just a few emotionally shut off people coming to terms with their problems. The rest was just an interesting circumstance in which to place the characters.
Just a question, have you seen the whole series?

Ok I have now seen up till the movie and I have to say I am now down RIGHT DEPPRESSED :( :( I mean man the only thing that kept me from doing some thing dangerous was the alternate story line where Shinji ran in to Rei and looked up her skirt dam it I love that type of story but then again I am one depraved individual

If that got you, the movie will kill you. The first time around it may reduce you to tears. But it's something you have to see over and over to truly understand. I've seen it about eight times myself and I still have only a vague understanding of it (the movie I mean).
As for the series ending, well that's what you call a mind screw. It took me forever to realize that the series ending takes place within the Human Instrumentality Project. It actually makes more sense after you see the movie. The movie was actually the originally intended ending, but due to censureship (the bane of all artistic expression) the idea was scraped and the current series ending was put together last minute. After Eva blew up, so to speak, they decided to do the original ending as a movie.
An interesting thing about the series ending is that it didn't go over to well with the fans. Anno actually recieved death threats and hate mail. So he used the movie as a sort of perverbial middle finger to the nasty fans. It's basically a deal with the devil, they get the spectacular ending they wanted, but it's all screwed up and freaky. There is actually a series of videotapes of real life Tokyo in it, and during it there is a bunch of Kanji that flashes up on screen. These are excerpts from the death threats and hate mail Anno recieved after the airing of the series ending.
Confused yet? It gets worse...

ROFL
I told ya. You have to watch it a few times to make sense of it. I had the same problem. It really does make sense, I swear. Watch it in Japanese (if you havn't already), it's a lot easier to understand, though some of your favorite lines may be missing.

Shinji profile individual who strives to be pitied via any means
Aska profile individual who seeks to be envied by any means
Rei profile individual lacking a soul (she can not make her own purpose and there for lacks a soul)
These three and the rest of NERV seem to all have the same problem the fear what others see in them and they all seem to need to compensate for there own self lack of value
MAN NERV NEEDS TO HIRE AN ARMY OF PHYSIOLOGISTS BADLY !!!

I thought the Idea too the second movie ending was that it had no meaning, Or that you would come up with your own conclusions.. a open ending.
Please you may bite my head off but I've been reading so many threads & seen so many websites about the ending (or what they think it means), that I just can't be taxed about thinking about it anymore. And yes I've seen the series & movies!
But on another note I love Evangelion & can't wait for the live action even if they make a complete hash of it XD

No, it's pretty acurate. Most people see EoE as the end, I see it as the begining. Ironically, SELEE and NERV were sucessful in that they did start a new genesis for mankind. It just wasn't what they planned.
Another thing about Eva is that it uses base myth, and with base myth you can draw hundreds of different references from various religions. It also is the little things, like a shadow cast forming a cross on the wall or Gendo sitting at his desk and the reflection on his perfectly polished floor forming the Star of David. Intentional or not, these things are there. It is inevitable that people form their own conclusions about what it means. There is no right answere to Eva.
