Here's my first shot at making a wallpaper using GIMP. Fairly simple design, I need to work on my extraction though.
Comments?

Aoi-chan! I know a friend that would go nuts if he saw this. Very good for a first wallpaper.
Anyways, on to my critique.
The actual image of Aoi seems to be extracted well in some spots and not so much so in others (i.e. the right side of her hair, a couple places along her kimono). It is also obvious that the image you took the picture from cut her off slightly on both sides. The flat lines make the image seem abbreviated.
Secondly, the background you used is considered a fairly common one. Maybe you should find a texture or an image to use for the background instead.
Just keep playing around with the image. Experimenting is one of the best ways to figure out how to do something.

for starters
you're quite good
but i think you need to add something on the bottom left of the wall
cuz ithink its too empty

Somehow... I think she's saying this in her mind...
========
"Oh, I'm on stage."
*nervous laugh*
"I'm on stage?... Now what?..."
Ha ha... ha... ha ha...

-_-
Anyways, good start

Really good try. I see she looks over joy. Anyways, the rest said what I was going to say. Can't wait to see the second version. :)

First of all, thanks for your kind words and suggestions. I made a couple of changes based on your comments:
1. Changed the background, try to make it fit in with the theme more
2. Chose a different picture where Aoi-chan isn't cut off
3. Tried to fill the blank space with text/other pictures
I like this one a lot better and I put a lot more time into it.
As always, any comments, suggestion are more than welcome.

Awesome job ^^. I'm not sure if the pic on the right fits too well, but let's see what others think.
The area around her looks a little strange. There are weird pixelled colours around her, like an outline. Try to fix that, maybe use a blur or just erase the outline from that layer. Maybe add a few sparkles to the background? I like the streak bar on the bottom though. ^^
Great first wall, and welcome to AW ^^

The blurring is because I had to compress it to a jpg
Is there any format that won't do that?

I like the wall. The outline of her needs to be clean up a bit. It's a bit messy. I also think that you should bring her to to the front of the bars you have across her breast. It looks a bit annoying. Anywys good job. :)

Hmm, if you use Photoshop it doesn't compress with pixelly. If you're not using photoshop, then when you get to the final version, upload it somewhere, and one of us would be happy to help you compress it without messing it up B)

I think the box should be monotone... to a purple colour or something
but it's a good first wall - and welcome to AW ;)

welcome to AW.com!! *throws confetti around*
you did a lovely job for your first wallpaper. As others suggested, the box on the right seems lonely and out of place. Details like that should be able to blend with the rest of the wallpaper. Secondly, I like what you're doing with the lines on the bottom. How about making some more of them, but maybe more transparent?
