OOC: Harry Potter and the Relic of Deorc

Hello players (and future players)! So, as promised, here is the OOC thread in which I encourage all of you to be asking questions. I'll post relevant information here as the RP gets underway. For now, all you really need to know is that RP will begin this week and everyone will start in Diagon Alley. The site (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) I referenced in the sign up thread has a lot of good info on the place if some of you are a little rusty on your HP nerdiness knowledge. A few announcements:


I want you all to start thinking about playing a position on your Houses' respective Quidditch team. I would like to make Quidditch a part of the story but I'll need players in order to keep it interesting. Taken Positions:

As you can see, mostly everyone from Slytherin is too cool for school. What's with that? I would like at least a couple of people from each House on the Quidditch team, that way we don't have one-sided matches. You can either edit your character(s) to include their Quidditch position (and if you do post here to let me know), or they can join the team during the RP. Your choice. For this purpose, I'll even allow first years to be on teams. How 'bout them apples? However, first come, first serve.

Also, ANIMALS! Does anyone have a pet? I didn't see any and would like to. So go get you some owls/cats/snakes/hippogriffs (no not really)/whatevers. =D

I think that's all I wanted to say. I'll edit this post as the RP progresses.

Update 6.23.09: Okay, too many of you wish to do magic without a wand. I have a bad feeling about this. Therefor, everyone that I have already approved to be allowed to do magic without a wand has had that privilege revoked. If you would like to regain it, please post the request here and give me a very detailed explanation about how this feat was achieved and which spells can be performed this way. If approved, you may copy and paste it into your bio in the sign up thread.

Update 7.1.09: I've attached to this post a screen shot of the excel spreadsheet (yes, I'm that nerdy) of the players so far. I've added details about the characters, and you might want to save it for quick reference when posting later. Though, I'm sure it will change as players invariably drop out (or never post!), students are sorted, and the storyline unfolds. Let me know if I've gotten anything wrong on this sheet.

Update 7.18.09: Getting into magical territory, I think it's only proper to remind you that:

*You can only use spells known from the books (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Spells). Cept me, cuz I'm cool like that.
*You cannot kill another player without their consent, preferably publicly as a post in this thread.
*Anyone can die at any moment save for a select few players (which probably have the good sense to know who they are). So if you wish to duel to the death, c'est la vie!

Update 8.8.08: I've changed the list of characters on the excel sheet to reflect, to the best of my knowledge, the players that I'm still permitting to play/still want to play. Lynbeck isn't on there though, he didn't really fit.

I'll have the rabbit and the cat be in the room. Like Crookshanks the cat will roam around free. The rabbit will be in a cage.

Voldemort was an Orphan, and I believe he was too arrogant to allow the half-breed Hagrid to take him to Diagon Alley and isntead went himself. Harry, however, did have Hagrid take him. So, I think your best bet is to have Hagrid take you.
So, how would it work? Would he wait for Hagrid? Meet up with Hagrid? He's still being taken to Diagon Alley even though he is in year 5 now?

I know how that feels for sure, that's why I choose to write most of my posts in Microsoft word or wordpad beforehand and simply copy paste. After many rpgs and various browser related mishaps, its a nice route to go especially when you spend a lot of time on a large detailed post.

You would need to be 5th year to be a prefect, so Kamau is good to go. Also, it would be interesting for Morpheal to bump into Reginal, who I haven't posted about yet. PM me if you would like to further discuss.

More information about my characters. I changed my second character's name after posting a couple of times, I just felt the redundancy of the same first initials. I started to feel unsatisfied with his name, so yeah, there’s that. Also, I posted rough sketches of my characters in the sign-up thread. I know I’m no amazing artist, but I wanted a visual referrence of my characters.

Also, since this time around I’m but a humble co-mod, I don’t have direct control of the main antagonist. Instead, I’m going to be writing up a third character shortly and align him or her with the baddies. First I want to confer with Cap to discuss the role of this new character. I'll introduce him or her later in the RPG, probably after the first chapter is completed.

^ Yeah that's sort of how it's supposed to work. It is much better to take your time, read everyone's posts and see how you could possibly incorporate what someone had said or done into your own post rather than solely focusing on what you want your character to accomplish.
Alluding to or referencing the subtlety of someone's post not only makes our GM giddy with literary excitement, but that person as well I assure you.

Now obviously we cannot all interact with the same people at once, as we might end up like poor overwhelmed K, but picking your spots where to do so can be done by simply reading the other posts. If that seems like to much reading or too much work, well then perhaps a fan-fic would be a better option where this reading of other's posts isn't a problem.

Alright! Everyone will be moved out of Diagon Alley soon, probably late Monday night (after I get out of work). So Monday is your last day to wrap everything up. I'm still waiting on one person who has yet to post, but otherwise everyone is looking good! I'm pleased with what is going on so far.

All your characters have spawned such awesome ideas in me for the story to come, so be on the look out for PMs from me about how to tie your character(s) directly into the story. (some of you have already received such PMs) I'm doing this to encourage everyone to be reading everyone else's posts, because you're likely to get tidbits about the plot from, say Valkarma or suzumi as with anyone else, as well as to keep everyone interested and posting.

I hope you're enjoying the RP! If you're confused on what is going on (even though I've tried to make the story so far completely obvious), post and ask!

I don't think it would hurt to have a day or so at the platform/boarding of the train. This allows people to get to their seats without a lot of backtracking in a post and helps with knowing who will be the cabin mates who can be points of interaction during the ride.
It can then easily fast forward to the train in motion without much difficulty I would suppose.

Yes, the full conversation was in the 6th book. When Lupin and Harry are talking. And Lupin says something about reminding him of James. And James said he had a problem, a furry problem. And most believed him to own a poorly behaved rabbit. Not quoted exact, but one of my favorite moments in Harry Potter. That and when Sirius and the others were looking for Kreacher. And Sirius goes, hopefully he crawled in the air vents and died...but I musn't get my hopes up. rolf.

Forgive the double post, but I thought it would be good to note to everyone what Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder is to do. Spells like lumos and such won't give light, you must use some pretty dark magic to be able to see.

Well, the cabin Alexis and Nat are in is also dark, so I assumed that it meant the whole train is dark too.

In case some of you are confused about the unfolding events, here's the gist.

Alastar and Elysia stowed away and darkened the train in order to search for Nathan. But Elysia got a bit impatient with K and the doll did some weirdness. They apparated to another part of the train, keen on aborting when Alastar found their target. He immediately informed his fellows, Abasi and his gang (supervised by the Toymaker) via a kind of flare spell. Then they were accidentally hexed by the Hufflepuff Twins, who were upset about the "pranksters" outdoing them. They aparrated away finally. Meanwhile, Abasi flew to abduct Nathan, but when he got there Alexis' wand pulled some magic on its own, producing a Grim made of fire that chased them off.

Aaaaaaand...GO!

Head Girl is open and yours if you want it. Though I think it's more important to keep her consistent with her character. So if you think it can work, go for it.

I wouldn't worry too much, we have at least 2 people who have been inactive for a little bit and some who maybe are just waiting until it reaches the school. Plus, it's sort of a transition style chapter anyway so I wouldn't expect a bunch of posts to begin with...though a few more than none at all would lead to a better sign.
It's a case of weathering the storm so to say, a little drought is expected at some points and with a few posts it could easily be back to full steam.

And if anything the rpg should be sanctified as I haven't forsaken it with my co-gm curse...I weep for those accursed rpgs.

So I think some of you are confused about how the sorting will work. You control the entire scene, including all dialogue (or lack thereof) between you and the Sorting Hat. You get to choose which house you are in. It's your moment to shine as we will all be checking to see where our 8 players go! See, I have special (and secret) plans for our first years. So get out there and sort yourselves!

Also, if you're afraid of posting and disrupting the flow of the Sorting you're being silly. Feel free to post in the mean time! I mean, those of us in the Headmistress' office will be. So go for it!

I was dragging my heels. SSD's character Francis Hill was supposed to sort herself, but she missed her turn. I decided to skip her and leave her to be sorted at the end (after Sano's character Medin Westbridge). She should be sorting herself, but she doesn't seem to be so I'm going to sort her myself...when I'm less angry. Then the feast will happen, then the welcome speech. Technically, none of the students who went to bed are allowed to do so, but I'll let it go. They'll just miss all the action when I get it going.

State of the RPG Address:
Many apologies for the lengthy delay in this particular post and the zero progress of the Rpg. Due to Capernicus' recent and unexpected departure from AF the Rpg has lost its main driving force it had to keep it on track.
However, the keys to the Rpg were left to me and I have tossed them over to Faceless111 as it was originally is Rpg idea. I will ride shotgun assuming the co-gm position and together we are trying to get things up and running again.

It's difficult deciding how we will deal with Caps character as she was a key part of the story, but we want to see the Rpg through to the end so we'll do our best to work with it.
We hope you'll continue to post and help things move along once we get the story rolling again.
