View Full Version : What in the World is Wrong With Gaming

My main concern about gaming is that it's becoming everything it is not. To many people want games that blow up everything. To many people don't want stories or plot. I find that were starting to turn out a lack of video games. There are very few games out these days that have unique storyline, powering plot, and memorable characters. I really don't like Gears of War, the dialogue sounds like something a 12 year old kid would make, they have an excuse just to use explosive, and it's the same tiring story over and over again.
What do you look in for in a game story and plot? Or do you just want to blow things up?
I look for story and plot mind you.
I don't really care about achievements or gamer score. I just want to play the game.
What do you think of achievements and gamer score?
And another peeve of mine is down loadable content. I didn't pay 60 bucks for a game that didn't come complete. I expect a game I paid 60 bucks to have everything in it, not this well it has half of it's content and the other content you have to buy.
Well then if the game only has half of it's content, then it really should be worth on 30 bucks. Not this stupid 60 bucks for a game that isn't complete. I feel like I was ripped off.
What do you think of pricing of games? What do you think of down loadable content?

well you are obviously playing the wrong games sukuh...
you more than likely own a ps3 so just wait for GOWIII... but if you want great games and you own an xbox360 there are tons of good games with story and plots like Halo or Gears of war or Bioshock (also for ps3 i think) or Gears of war2 or Assassins Creed (also on ps3 i think) or Resident Evil 5 (also on ps3 i think) or COD4 story mode or COD: World at war or The Darkness (highly underrated game) or Ninja Gaiden (also on the Ps3)... youve probably just been playing alot of crappy rpgs aye... i suggest you get off that genre and try something new like action adventure shooter games... mainly resident evil 5. its the SHIZZNIZZLE fool...
PS: downloadable content doesnt mean the games incomplete... it just means the creators felt like adding a little somethin somethin for your troubles... the downloadable content is whats makes paying 60 bucks for a game worth it sometimes...

DLC is like append discs or expansion packs, it's something "extra" to give the game some replay value long after they're released, you can choose not to buy it. Nothing to fret about.

I'm sorry, but Halo and Gears of War have the WORST story lines ever, they have no depth, no plot, no drama, they are just about space marines blowing up aliens, and that is boring, same as Killzone and all the other big name FPS games apart from Fracture which is actually doing something else. Heck, most RTS games today have better plots and storylines than FPS games, I mean look at Dawn of War series, or Company of Heroes? they have epic storytelling and their freaking RTS games.
RPG's are all about story, whether its an epic open-ended Western-style fantasy RPG or a linear, plot driven JRPG.
And a couple of games to try from the Western RPG arena, TES IV Oblivion or Fallout 3, they are both good games, or be abit daring and exotic and get S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadows of Chernobyl, its an FPS but a good story-driven FPSRPG like Bioshock or Deus Ex.

I agree about the shooters. None of the shooters are even good. I will however by Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, and F.E.A.R. Project Origin[played the first game, will play the second game]. Next off I have already played the TES series, I love the TES series they are my love.
Bioshock is a great example, great example of something new and unique in the video game world. They used a plot that was unnoticeable. Something that you would completely ignore and then just through it in your face. A great example of a well driven plot and story.
I played Resident Evil 5 only because I have followed the series. Not a good story, but certainly fun to play.
Gears of War and Gears of War 2 are all the same....crap.
Halo, as much as the story was on the okay side not my style.
I like fighters, puzzles, RPGs, and some shooters.
And YES 60 bucks is not worth a game that isn't complete...down loadable content isn't something they wanted add. It's something they didn't originally add because they want more money.
It's all about money in most of these companies.

I find myself disliking most new games they are over pirced and lack a lot of the charm older games have and they feel they can gloss over any bad game with nice graphics and all that.
but then again I was a kid of the late 80's to 90's
good games are ones that stand the test of time, most kids now days just want new games and then move onto the next new game they do more buying than playing.

There are too many overrated games like Halo, and the gaming fanbase has some of the worst trolls.
Lately games have less originality than a decade ago and will continue to get worse. You should have known that a long time ago.

I grew up playing the original Quake and Doom, Sonic from the Genesis, um Super Nintendo. I really wish the originality in games would come back.
I play games to play it, but for story as well. I want to feel like I have a purpose. I want the game to make me save the world or whatever they ask of me. I don't want to play something senseless and ridiculous. The story has to drive me morally and emotionally to complete the goal they ask of me. Gears of War doesn't do that, Halo does, but doesn't.

I feel the same way about it, story line and plot is very importent when making or playing a good game. I also find it fun to sometimes play a older style game or even a newer one where you just kill stuff or blow it up. But I alays tend to go back to the ones that have stories like RPGs. They're always fun.

There's plenty of new games that aren't plotless explosion fests. You just got to get away from a lot of the mainstream fratboy games.
Many would say that games are going too casual. Becoming far to simple with not enough depth since the Wii is doing so good and the games that sell on that are mainly shovelware mini games.
But in the days of old most games did lack a story. But now most games try to have a story even when they don't really need to. Would you rather have no story at all in a game or a really lame story?

I play for plot, and fun. I never have really cared much for graphics, and you don't need explosions to make a game good. The only good shooters I've played are Metroid Prime, and Left 4 Dead...everything else just seems to be dying slowly D: (we need a new Monkey ball)!

There's plenty of stuff out there that has the potential to be engaging to you. I realize the whole JRPG field has gotten a little stale and keeps doing the same stuff over and over for the most part. I'm not really sure what kind of things you're into. But I'm sure there is. But if the newer stuff really doesn't do it for you then there's always older stuff. Nothing wrong with playing and getting into older games.
In the 90's the gaming industry was really into cutesy mascot platformers and Fighting games. Neither of those really had engaging storylines. But there was always those few RPG's from Japan that would make it here. Or Adventure and western RPG's on the PC.
Many people think new movies are crap. (I'd agree for the most part)
Many people think new music is crap too. I'm probably one of them. Which is why I listen to older music. The same can be done with games.

yeah, the whole FPS genre doesn't usually interest me to much. Theres too many Space Marine and WW2 FPSs. I do First Person usually only if its more of an adventure game or RPG.
But meh, I'm old and whenever someone says "Shooter" I still think of games like Gradius, R-Type, and Raiden...which seem to be "shmups" and "space shooters" now.

I do play older games. My consoles that are still running in my house, exception Xbox, which won't read CDs:
Playstation
Playstation 2

Xbox
Xbox 360
Wii
Nintendo 64
Jaguar

I even have a system on my computer called Mame and I can play all the arcade games I ever wanted and tend to play those. I like Blazing Star and R-type.

Oh I like Too Human because it's so cheesy. And corny. It's the kind of game you can like for being sucky. I mean the gameplay sucks completely. But the story and the acting is good. I'm so into the old fantasy Nord kingdom speech. Old English. Hahahahahahaha.
I would like to make another point about down loadable content. This isn't content they decided to add because they wanted to give extra to the game. This is stuff you would have originally got back then for beating the game. Soul Calibur 3 for instance you had all the costumes and weapons from beating the game and the various modes. Soul Calibur 4 now you have down load something or go online.
This isn't material that they decided hey we didn't put this in and it sounds like a good idea. It's hey, let's leave this material out and sell it for more money.

Well that's unfortunately the world we're living in. The best way to protest against that stuff is to just not buy it. We're kind of still in the early stages of DLC so the developers and publishers are messing around trying to find out what works and what doesn't work. They're all businesses first and foremost. So if they can make money selling you costumes then they're going to do that.

If you like older games and haven't come across it yet, I would recommend Snatcher. It's a detective game which functions almost entirely on plot, but in my opinion the story is so entertaining and the way it's executed is so interesting, it's a great play.
A very early attempt by the creator of the Metal Gear Series, but it's almost nothing like Metal Gear.

We're living in a competitive world. Especially the American society. Money and business is all we care about, but not the satisfaction of some of it's original consumers.

...and all the other big name FPS games apart from Fracture which is actually doing something else.
I haven't actually played Fracture due to the fact it was almost universally panned, but I do recall that one of the most common complaints about the game was how incredibly derivative the Protagonist (whose name is Jet Brody, which is the single most horrible name in the history of mankind) and Story was. In fact, the only things that people liked about the game in reviews was the Earth-Shapey gun, and they were disappointed that no one had actually built a game around it. Regardless, it should probably be left out of the "Big Name FPS" category, as it apparently only sold 140,000 copies on both platforms(Sau (http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=13870)ce (http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6966)).
Also, as far as OP's complaints go, I disagree. I don't have enough time to finish all the decent games that come out and I have a lot of time free to sit around and play games. I could go through my PS3 collection and rattle off all the decent games+stories that I haven't finished yet to prove my point, but that would be work. Now if you are looking at it as a rate of good games to cruft, then yes, there is still a lot of cruft as there has always been. But there's still a large volume of decent games out there, you just aren't looking hard enough (or own a Wii, in which case good luck with that).

Japanese RPGs are the superior games. If you can't deal with English voice acting (which is rarely bad anyway), then that's your problem. And I've come across quite a few new games in our collection that allow you to switch over to Japanese anyway. You're just being narrow-minded, so if you can't take what you can get, you should stop whining.

You can like JRPG's all you want. Go on about how great and deep the story is thats been done to death or how great the overly generic characters are half the time.
English Voice acting in JRPG's just like in Anime has gotten waaay better over the years as the two things have become more popular with English speaking consumers.
They both, more times than not were so bad they were good. Early CD based games in general (Japanese or American) that needed English voice acting like Lunar, Vay, Ys Book I & II etc. were almost all not good. Mainly due to the fact that they were never going to sell enough copies of the game to warrant hiring decent voice actors. So usually people on the development teams, the programmers, the translators etc. did the voice work.

You are wrong on this one. In Soul Calibur 4, you CAN get all the weapons and the costumes in the game; they were not "left out". However, you have to earn them (in fact, I thought this was always the case). An alternative to all of this would be to download the packs that have all of this content on them. There are exclusive costume parts (not whole costumes) that you can only get online, but there are a small number of these and they only cost about $1.50 for a pack of them (are you really complaining about this?), but you can beat the game without these.
If your plan is to unlock everything, then either play through everything or download the content. If not, well, you can't really complain.

That depends on what YOUR definition of "gamer" is, but you are almost falling into the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. Just because they are not playing the games that YOU like and that fall into YOUR standards does not mean that these people are not "gamers". The same goes for your definition of "hardcore gamer", since there is no concrete definition of the term.
While you can argue that the only good video games are ones with a good plot, others can say that its ones with lots of explosions, more others can say that its ones with copious amouts of blood and while still others can say that its ones with a fantasy storyworld with neither of you of being completely right or wrong.

You obviously have bought into the hype. My example was Soul Calibur 4, new weapons and clothes you would have been given when completely the various modes the games has. By beating the game. Now it is go to Xbox Live and buy out of your pocket money stuff they would have originally placed in the game. This isn't extra features that they are adding these are things they would have originally added into it's other sequels.
Why should they blow on the story if it is going to have a sequel you ask. Isn't that obvious. The only reason I would buy the sequel is if I liked the original game. If the original game didn't interest me nor did I like it's story I will not buy the sequel.
I will buy Bioshock 2, because Bioshock the first game had an intriguing plot and story. It was amazing and it was very involving unique and new.
I actually am not a fan of Final Fantasy. I don't like super cut scenes, but I do think they are crucial.

I agree with Sataned and MaruDashi you are playing the wrong games, personally i don't like shooters because i suck at them, but that doesn't make them bad games true most of the don't have the greatest plot but most people buy them for diferent reasons like multiplayer or co-op.
Like you i love a good story over a good graphics but why not check the rpg that are coming for exaple the new Nippon Ichi games (http://animecaster.wordpress.com/2009/05/11/the-new-nippon-ichi-software-invasion/) or the New Star Ocean series for the PSP, for the DS there the remakes of classics such FF 3 & 4, Dragon Quest 4 & 5 and so on and in the most extreme of cases you could always learn japanese since there a lot games with excelent plots.
About gaming score, i think is necesary since most online games bring the competitivity in us, not to mention the bragging rights.
And the downloadble content i personally have mixed feelings about it, for one side it give you something extra to look foward once you beat the game or some extra, like the downloadables characters for disgaea 3, on the other side i dislike when the game producers try to extend the marked life of game or sell cheats.

to be honest, stories are for books and games tend to rely on gameplay?

well i love action games too, and kill things and blow up is good some times, but its get bored after sometime, and super cutscenes is not allways good, but its more interesting.
i have tony hawk american wasteland and i love playing that, even if the story sucks, bcuz its fun!
also love play Devil May Cry3,its fun too.
but in these days games are falling down to the spiral of explosions and such,or have some super holywood effects. And thats too much.
thats only what i think.

Ok all of you that say the recent shooters that have been comeing out storys suck... YOU SUCK! its a damned game not a movie do you really want to be watching cutscenes half the game? you all obviously loved FFX...
Stop looking for games that are like the games youve played already and Move on to the new...
PS: yeah some of the games i mentioned do supposably lack a good plot and story (i really dont think so) on the first game but thats because theres obviously gonna be a sequel why throw everything into one big game when you can split up the story and make 60$ X 2 like gears...
PSS: i seriously doubt incomplete games are being thrown out to the public by video game companys... give me an example of one since you all seem to think your getting incomplete games... A game that you own! otherwise just STPHU!
No, I just want a game with alil more depth then a tea spoon, all recent shooters are the same, Space marines fighting aliens or British space Nazi, modern marines fighting terrorists or WW2.
I don't love FFX, I prefer The Elder Scrolls.

Exactly. As I said the only shooter of the year that had depth in it was Bioshock.
Elder Scrolls series is better then any FFX.

Nothing is wrong with it. I enjoy a game with BOTH plot and explosions. But like you said REM, its not always about explosions. One good game without many explosions enduced by gunplay or rocket launchers: Final Fantasy. Case and point.

Umm...are you okay?!?!?!?!?!? Gears' dialouge is awesome. And the story is different. Gears 2 to me is an exception to what you're trying to say.

No, it isn't. It's the same go on the general plot....aliens on earth got to destroy them and you're a military man. Gear's dialogue is stupid...half of the time it's like they couldn't think of anything so they have to say a fowl toilet word. Gears is not the exception to what I am saying. It is the official game that got me to write this thread. Gears sucks.

What's the problem with achievements/trophies? If you like to them then do if you don't then don't. I persoanlly like doing them...it's what makes me keep playing the game.
Like some posters above said....they are extra content, it's not like anything it's missing. GT4 didn't missed anything...story-wise yet RockStar made an add-on called LaD...and it looks like an extra to me more than some item that it's missing.

Graw, has everyone bought into the hype. Down loadable content isn't new or extra content they add.
Gears was the same story we see all the time human versus aliens. And they stole from Gauntlet Legends with enemies coming out of holes and you had to destroy the holes.

So many opinions...all of which are obviously irrefutable fact!
/sarcasm
Honestly though, I don't really care about the storyline as long as the gameplays good.
Don't get me wrong, having a good story is definitely nice, but I didn't need Tolkien-esque epics or Storpardian wordplay to compel me to eat fruits, dots and ghosts in Pac-Man fifteen years ago, and I don't need them now.
