The Clannad movie is a shorter version 之 the series, and covers more than just the first season. To my knowledge it covers both Clannad and Clannad: After Story 吾 would suggest watching the series first, loads 之 humor and character development.

I watched the movie first, but I would suggest watching the series first. Though in the end, you could just separate them and pretend they are not related, because they are quite different from each other.

The first Part of Clannad covers about a third of the movie, and I am assuming the way the Clannad: After Story is moving, it will cover the rest.
