i saw dead space downfall that one scared me and ive seen the ones you've listed
It really depends for me. Although I do like the horror genre, most of the anime doesn't really please me that much. While I disliked Neuro the anime, I liked the manga (aside from the sub-par artwork), for example.
Despite the fact that Uzumaki is a movie, not an anime, I'd say I'd list that as one of my favorites. The manga too. Junji Ito's works are often excellent in tackling this genre, although I'd have to admit, Gyo was a little too loose-ended for my tastes.
I liked various parts of Higurashi no naku koro ni anime and the School Days visual novel. I also liked the uncensored version of the last episode of School Days the anime, although the drawn out suspense and excessive drama in the previous episodes didn't make the final episode worth it, imo.

I'm fairly new to the genre and I've found more manga than I did anime. Hope it counts. ^^
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2 seasons, 1 OVA): anime
Jigoku Shoujo (3 seasons): anime and currently reading manga
Presents: manga
Nightmares for Sale: manga
Gyo: manga
This is all I could really hunt up. But I'll check out the ones you guys listed above! Thanks! \(^o^)/

Red Garden, Darker Than Black, and Death Note aren't horror.
My favorite would have to be Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. That was the only anime I've seen so far that has actually made me scared.
*edit*
Le Portrait de Petit Cossette was also very good but, again, I don't really consider it "horror".

I love bloody-horror animes...
Jigoku Shoujo, nice.
Le Portrait de Petit Cossette was kinda cool, but I don't consider it horror ...
Red Garden... ugh... a really pathetic and ugly anime... but it's supposed to be horror so >.>

The only horror anime I've seen is Boogie Pop Phantom. At least, I think it would be considered horror. Anyway, it was chilling and definitely made me think with it's running themes of lost childhood and regret.
Eating the painful memory bugs?! Ughhh!

Higurashi is downright insane. T__T
Uzumaki was the creepiest manga (http://www.onemanga.com/uzumaki/) I have ever read. However, I've never seen the movie.

Well, I consider Death Note more "suspense" than horror, but SURE, that can go there. Doubt's great, too. I LOVE it.

Devil Lady
Ghost Hunt
Hellsing (Ultimate and the original anime) - not really horror, but it has Vampires and ghouls
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - really twisted
Black Blood Brothers - so-so, but again, Vampires!!!
I really wish there was more horror-themed anime... GOOD horror-themed anime.

Well, I don't watch a lot of horror animes/manga, but I'm pretty sure the one that tops my list counts. And it's....
MONSTER!!!!
I can't really explain it, but it freaks me out, yet I can't stop reading/watching it.

My favourite horror anime series was most definitely Lunar Legend Tsukihime.
I adored the gothic and horrific atmosphere of which it had.

Boogiepop Phantom is first-rate stuff- genuinely creepy at times and wildly original. I rather liked the live-action movie too; they weren't able to push the supernatural elements quite as far as the anime did, but still a superior adaptation.
Perfect Blue is a classic. It's a one-of-a-kind though- there are plenty of live-action psycho thrillers around (including the awful Perfect Blue remake) but you don't get many anime ones. I'm not sure why- Perfect Blue worked so well!
Blood: The Last Vampire is excellent too. I love the animation, but also the unusual setting, the 1960s time period and the slightly odd characters. Blood + is pretty good too, but it doesn't quite reach the same heights as The Last Vampire.
Those are my favourites, although there are plenty more decent ones out there, most of them already mentioned- Higurashi, Elfen Lied, Hell Girl, Vampire Princess Miyu, Demon Prince Enma. And there are the various Yoshiaki Kawajiri movies too, Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust- all worth seeing, even if the first two are 'old school' now.

Higurashi is so messed up. And it makes no sense until the second season. But I still loved it.
And Elfen Lied was just... SAD. xD It wasn't as scary as it was sad.
Anyways, those are the only ones I can really think of. I wouldn't consider Death Note a horror movie.

Yeah I don't really watch a lot of Horror animes. The only one that I've seen is Hellsing. It was pretty good in my opinion.

one of them is infected but has some control over it.
as far as I know anime dont do the horror style too well since anything not shonen or romantic ends up gorey anyways.

-3) Ghost Hound
-4) Kaibutsu-kun
-5) Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musumetachi
-6) Yokai Ningen Bem

I agree. I owe a lot of my childhood trauma to the manga of Kazuo Umezu, Junji Ito, and Toru Yamazaki. Especially Junji Ito's short story about a boy who metamorphosises into a slug... Yeh.

Indeed. There's a manga called Fuan No Tane. It's scary..but not scary. It's more in the sense that when you go to Baka-Updates it sounds scarier than it really is.
