Mind you, I haven't seen all of the series, but seeing so many people put down Shinji makes me wonder...

Is it that he's weak, that he's a "pansy" who grows frightened and wants to give up, or is it that he's too real for comfort? Much of anime twists reality into its ideal world (good or bad), following through into the characters. Time and time again we're given the hero who vanquishes all evil, who is thrown into his/her destiny and yet rapidly moulds into that role, becoming the "child of fate," the "savior."

Therein lies the reason I *like* Shinji more than most. He's *real.* Thrown into his hero's position without a choice, he reacts as a 14-year-old boy would be expected to react, especially when asked to put his life in danger in what becomes routine. He doesn't have the revelation of its being his destiny, nor the sudden switch into "hero mode." No, he's afraid, he doesn't want to die, he wants more acknowledgement for putting his life in danger. I find that refreshing in a character, and especially one in a leading role. At the same time I try not to argue with people over their dislike towards him, as I continue to suspect it's because it's that ideally-created hero they seek (And by that I do not mean perfect, but shaped to fit their role), and not the too-close-to-life one.

Absolutely. I know this seems like a bump, but it is absolutely terrible that my favorite character from my favorite anime of all time isn't on the list. Reasons?

1. Rei is just dang cool. Anybody who wants to fight over that, go watch the series again.

2. Antisocial characters are the most complex. Shinji and Rei are the two most complex characters on the whole show... unless you count Misato, but I don't.

3. Rei is very easy to identify with. The weak, the trodden upon, or those who are simply shy and lonely are easy to identify with because every human is like that at one time or another.

4. Rei is absolutely not the same as Yui. Sure, her personality was ripped from Yui. But if she were the same, she would have the same memories (which I think she doesn't, but I could be wrong) and memories detail personalities more than your inner nature does.

5. Watch the ending. Rei is different because she exists differently in other's minds. You see yourself as a reflection through others. Simply because her personality is ripped from Yui doesn't mean that they're the same person, because they're not. In fact, that leads me to #6.

6. Rei is important to the plot. And when it comes down to it, Shinji's mom, who only exists in flashbacks, is ultimately not.

I hope I've given all you Rei-less factions something to think about. Oh, and plus, since I've brought something new to the discussion, it's not a bump. SO THERE.

Ummmm Rei isn't technically Yui because although she is a "clone" of Yui, she has a different soul. Yui's soul occupies Unit-01 while Rei has the soul of an angel. You can classify the dummy-plug Rei's as being just "clones" but the Rei that becomes Lilith has a soul of her own. You can't "clone" a soul, so to speak... wow imagine if you could...
