I am confused!! I just finished watching the 29th episode and I completely lost track of how many notebooks there really are and how the death notes were moving from person to person. I looked for information and I found out that there were originally 4 death notes. Ryuk had two and Rem had two. Ryuk dropped the death note that was originally from Shidou (the one Light picked up i the first episode) but kept his own one. Rem gave the one from Gelus to Misa and kept hers with which she later killed L and Watari. Rem died and Light picked up her death note. So far that's what I found out and what I can refer back to from the previous episodes.
So, Misa still has her death note, the police has one death note (which one??) and Light must have one too about no one knows about... am I right so far? Well, I just don't get the connections and all that also when Light renounces from his death note (which one? and how did he keep his memory while checking on the mafia members?)... please help me understand all this!

It's pretty confusing and hard to explain but there's a very nice guide on the ownership of the notebooks if you can understand it.
