Somewhere in the ballpark of 25 episodes. I haven't watched it in ages, so I can't be entirely sure.

Twenty Three episodes were important to the story though. Their was one 'Catch Up' episode so that you could see what has happened recently and also their is the final two episodes which are just about the main characters talking about themselves, like a stage play. Mostly about Shinji trying to find out if he is worthless or not.

Then ofcourse their is "Death and Rebirth" and the "End of Evangelion" special ending thingy.

The "talking about himself part" is the first ending. It's Shinji's version of the people around him (it's an aspect of Jewish philosophy, it shows up in GitS too) trying to get him to allow himself to become part of the Human Instrumentality. As you can see, in this ending Shinji decides ultimately to become part of the Instrumentality.

It's supremely important to the series, because it is one of it's endings.

The original is made in 1995
then 1997 the end of evangelion
then 2004 remastered with directors cut, and renewed EoE.
the remastered are the best for me, its same like original just 5.1 audio, much better picture and scenes from directors cut in eps around 21 22 23 24...
there are platinum editions etc but they are same like remastered from 2004 and that is the newest and the best.
The rebuild movies suck. The graphics may be amazing, but the story sux compared to original.
Live action movie is a flax of sorrow ...

Yeah I know. Funnily enough all the confusing things that the characters were saying made a lot of sense to me. I was suprised that I could keep up. I loved that ening though, it was cool.

No its not. He destroyz it. He decides to live as individual, as himself. "I want to be my self. I'm no more and less than me. My life can have great value. I'm worth to exist." And thats the point. As Anno said: "Its a message for fans, and myself. If we don't do anything on our own, nothing will change."
All the characters aroud him talk about their failures in life. Go and see it again. He breaks the instrumentality in the end. And everyone congrat. him because for the first time he starts to think and care for him self. Not to listen and do what others tell him to. In the other words he becomes Shinji-San an adult.

And thats also why he is the only one able to defeat the angels and stay alive, because he does things on his own way, so he stoped instrumentality every time he killed an angel. In the instrumentality he Asuka and Rei break the instr. and decide to continue living as individual. You can hear them shout it out together. Its because of Shinji, he's a menace :D Evangelion also follows the philosophy "The evil is in other people".
I can't believe some of you think he accepted instrumentality xD They simply had to make EoE to show you what happend. And its not a different ending, its the same story, just drawn in different way. The EoE is like an addition to original series, and its also awesome.

He accepted himself, and therefore could bear to be accepted into the instrumentality. The other characters were not the true other characters, but the characters in his head. He accepted himself, and only then could join the rest of humanity.

The key difference between the two is that Shinji in the movie is never able to accept himself, but decides he'd rather live a life of pain then a simulacrum of pleasure. TV Shinji is confident enough of himself that he can bear to have all his faults exposed to the rest of humanity.
