View Full Version : Yaoi/Yuri VS. Straight Couples

It doesn't seem that a lot of people are fans of straight anime couples anymore nowadays and well......frankly that disturbs me a bit. So I'd like opinions. I myself, think there is nothing more precious and lovely as boyxgirl love. That's how it was meant to be after all, right? Granted, I DO like yaoi and yuri SOMETIMES. But there are only a choice few out of the hundreds of couples I ship that are not boyxgirl.
So let's hear it: What's better to you? Yaoi, (boyxboy) Yuri (girlxgirl) or Straight? (boyxgirl)

I like yuri, and once in a while yaoi is okay, but left to my own devices I tend to go for the straight pairs. I'm straight...what do you expect? ^^;

Well, I'm straight and straight romance is easier for me to relate to, therefore I like it better.
I never got the obsession girls have with Yaoi. o.O

Haha im fine with any of the three pairings....
Except I get a little wary around 2 dudes.
As long as they dont go too "over the top" (if ya kno what i mean haha) I'm fine.
Otherwise i could care less about gender. Love is love, and there's nothing more heart-warming than seeing a relasionship develope beautifully, or tragically.

I think straight is the best, of all three... since I am straight
but then at times I think Yaoi is cute!
Like sometimes i read fanfics of SasuxNaru and they make them say the most adorable things to one another. I could care less about Yuri though, I'm not too fond of it, it's okay though, but I like Yaoi better. ^^'
But like i said, straight is totally the best.

it really doesn't matter to me what the gender of the couples are. If the two characters have good chemistry and as long as one of the two people in the relationship doesn't annoy me I would normally not care if its two girls, two guys, or boyxgirl. However, in the fanfiction world i love lots of slash pairings that aren't canon in the actual movie, book, anime, or manga. I'm a big slash/yaoi fan but i'll watch anything really, doesn't matter the gender pairing.

It doesn't matter really. I'm straight and there's nothing wrong with liking yaoi. I personally like it and find it cute. Straight pairings are good too but again still, it doesn't matter. I don't know about yuri though but I don't like it as much as yaoi or straight pairings. It all depends on the story and how the relationship goes. Love is what love is, no matter what gender.
Knuffle Bunny

That depends. I am totally against pedophilia types of gay (Loveless, but in general it's a great anime). But i'm totally corrupt when it comes ot hot gay guys. >///< Even when they're not meant to be (Light and L -drools-).
If both men are ugly...ew. x3 GirlxGuy is also cool most of the time. (If the girl isn't one of those innocuous clumsy types << >>)

Yuri.
Yeah yeah, I know Im a guy and its expected, but its more then just turn ons and dirty thoughts like some might think. Girl/girl romances at times to me just seem so emotional, deep, and hm.... idk I guess more passionate. I know Yoai out there can have those things too and I agree wholey. But something about in a manga/anime seeing two beautiful girls hold each other or kiss, kinda makes ya want to feel the same way as they do.
Did that make any sense or was that a little too much?

As much as I am a Loveless fan, the Souhi and Ritsuka shoto relationship makes me shiver. I condone these kinds of things but in all honesty would rather not have them ;).
Ermm I would prefer a good story with younger cute couples than older (21+) pairings. I guess my yaoi fascination terminates there and I kind of have to have the bishie thing or I'm not interested. Yaoi pairings like that in -Fake- don't interest me. I guess I find young yaoi couples to be cute and that's it.
I rarely encounter yuri and I'll be honest and admit that it doesn't interest me. If they are the feature of a good story, then I'm in but otherwise I won't read or watch it.
Shoujo ftw! I do have a fair bit in the bag here but must agree that they are pretty much all the same [Thanks Mini]. I think they are easier to relate to and seem to be able to play with my emotions the most.

I don't think it's the general idea of a boy with a boy or a girl with a girl that people like. It's all in the character's actions with the "significant other" that people truly enjoy.
I love seeing characters that are real, if you know what I mean. They argue and have their off days; they love and smile; they cry and feel pain. It doesn't matter to me if they're one way or another: just as long as I got my money's worth out of buying the manga or anime.
Oh, the miserlyness of me!

This is actually quite a difficult question. First of all, I have no interest in yuri. Nope, it does nothing for me. However, I still respect yuri fans. Now, I prefer yaoi couples. But wait! I can explain. Honestly, I've never understood why girls (yes, I know plenty of men that like yaoi, but I need to specifiy girls right now) like yaoi either, and I'm a fan girl myself. But this is why I prefer it:
I'm naturally a hopeless romantic. I love bishie boys and I just can't get enough of them. But I just can't stand when the typical shoujo girl pops into the story and steals his heart. It makes me wish I was the girl, thus making "competition". I know you can't be competitive with a fantasy character, but the intention is there. A good example is Light from Death Note. He never really loved Misa, but she loved him so that's close enough. I love Light myself, so it pisses me off to see a character that I hate flirt with him. But if it was L, who I also happen to like, it would be a completely different story. I wouldn't feel as competitive because L is another man. I can't ever be a man, so I just give up. I know that really makes no sense, but seeing two characters I find attractive together is much more entertaining than with a girl I dislike.
Now, I don't like Yoru or Ran (Sukisyo) in that way, but I like seeing them together. That's because Sukisyo is a shounen-ai, so of course I'm going to support that pairing. But why do I still not support Mizuki and Sano (Hana-Kimi)? I honestly don't know o_o. Perhaps it's because I'm bored of straight pairings.

I think all us girls can relate to that, yes. XD But I look at it this way: I WANT my favorite guy to be happy. And if being with [insert female character name here] makes him happy, then so be it! ^_^
BUT....if the guy ALSO hates it when the girl flirts with him, it's a different story. This is why I hate TakutoxMeroko so much. It's obvious that she annoys the HECK outta him....:glare:
That girl from Black Cat who flirts with Train is annoying too. I don't like her already and I've only seen two episodes. >.>

Oh you mean the chick that breaths fire XD? I don't like her either <_<;.
You do have a point, but that's WHY I hate it. It's no fair that some chick can win over MY bishie's heart XD! Again, I know that makes no sense, but if you think of it in a literal way I'm sure it'd be easier to understand. I mean, what girl wants their crush's heart to be stolen XD?

Love is love, no matter what the pairing may be. I don't care if a guy dates a guy, their sexuality shouldn't lessen the intensity of the romance just because they aren't straight.
So I don't care, as long as it's not some dumb crack pairing.

I like hot men. I think that's obvious seeing as I'm a straight female. So naturally, I think the idea of two hot men going together is hot. I'm all for the yaoi! I mean, I like reading/watching straight couple anime/manga, but overall, I prefer malexmale. As for fanfiction, I've totally gotten bored of straight pairings.
But just wondering, do you mean mean shounen-ai and shoujo-ai? People seem to mix up shounen-ai with yaoi and shoujo-ai with yuri. Just so you know, yaoi and yuri are both sexually explicit stuff. Meanwhile shounen-ai is malexmale love and shoujo-ai is femalexfemale love. Just had to clear that up.

Ah I think that's just because yaoi and yuri are better-known terms and easier to type.^^; I do that too even though I know the difference. But if I say "shounen-ai" a lot of times people don't know what I'm talking about. Too Japanese I guess. XD

I agree, a lot of people doesn't know the difference between shoujo-ai/shounen-ai and yuri/yaoi, but oh well >.>
As for me, I don't care, as long as it's a good anime/manga. That means, good story, good artwork, not too annoying characters... etc. But I have to admit I'm a little more into yuri (Or should I say, Shoujo-ai, I don't watch too explicit stuff >.>) just because, well I find it cute, two girls togheter.

I'm straight but I like Yaoi or Shounen-Ai romances better, only because after awhile I'm sick of the girl/boy romance story blah...boring after awhile. Plus yaoi storylines always amuse me! xD But I still love the old' straight girl/boy pairings.
Gravitation is a great shounen-ai anime and manga ^^
Yuri...I'm not really a fan of it. Only anime close to anything yuri I watched was Revolution Girl Utena, which had a great story plot ^^!

Yaoi is the best in my opinion, but I like any coupling with good depth and chemistry. What really annoys me is when people ignore the chemistry between two female characters or two male characters because the characters "aren't gay". Love goes beyond gender, people. If you fall in love with someone, it's because you love their personality, not because they're "hot". Unless, of course, you're extremely shallow and don't really understand love.
I tend to like canon things, or at least ship pairings that are well-rooted in canon. Nevermind the fact they're yaoi pairings in shounen anime/manga. Heh, what can I say? The male characters are much rounder and hold much stronger bonds with each other than any female. But, of course, that's up to interpretation.
If we want to get technical, shounen-ai is taken as pedophilia in Japan. The real term is Boys Love.
I use yaoi and yuri for the previously stated reasons - it's easier to identify. People use yaoi to describe boyxboy love and not just boyxboy sex nowadays anyway. It's molding into a broader term now, so we don't have to distinguish the difference as much.

For a story line? Straight definitley. It feels weird when it's a yuri couple, and i can't really get into the storyline because im too attracted to the women xDDDD. and because im a straight boy i will NEVER watch yaoi, but i can imagine if i were gay/bi, the feeling would be the same.

I really don't like hentai, to be honest. Not as entertainment, at least. I mean, if you want something to masturbate to, then hentai works. But, honestly, it's all very depthless. The reason I tend to like yaoi and yuri more is because they depict love more than lust. But, I suppose that's just my helpless romantic side.

A responsible adult, huh? Okay, I see what you're saying. However, I disagree. I'm pretty sure if anyone under eighteen can come in here and talk about yaoi and know what it's about, they surely won't be too phased by hentai. I'm not saying that you should name any, I'm just saying you'd be surprised at what kids have seen these days. I mean, my first yaoi ever was Sensitive Pornograph (which is notorious for being hard-core) and I was in 5th grade.

Right now, I'd prefer straight couples. Any is fine, but right now, I'm sticking to that.
Note: Of course you shouldn't judge someone by age, it's all a matter of how well you know things and if you can have an adult or mature conversation. I'm 16(turning 17 in March ^^) but I don't treat anyone different(in certain aspects) because of there age. And people, don't give me that age=wisdom crap, because I studied philosophy well enough to know that! I've chatted with people as young as 11 on this forum and people as old as their mid-30's on this forum, and they certainly don't judge me on age! Just saying, so you know peoples! And this new generation seems to be more mature and smarter, plus the things the things they are exposed to certainly don't surprise me, nor shock me! Oh, my mother is so strict on what I can see and what I cannot! Well, she's just showing her love and concern for me ^^. And yeah, I could imagine it now: I'm watching Yaoi or Yuri, seeing two people of the same gender kiss, then my mother walls in...>.<...

(moves away from the whole "age vs. maturity" issue...)
I like regular and yaoi stories. I guess I like yaoi 'cuz it's different, and kinda taboo. And unlike yuri, it just makes sense.
I'm female, and being intimate with another chick just...sounds like a lot more work. Hence why I've never been turned on by it. >.>
I also agree that a lot of yaoi/yuri/hentai series don't have much of a plot. But the same goes with regular porn. People usually watch those things for the sex anyway, right? And producers seem to know and capitilize on it.
But some good yaoi series I've seen/read are:
1) "Ai no Kusabi" (Anime). Beautiful, beautiful series.
2) "Love Mode" (Manga). Kinda addictive, even though every relationship in it...uhh, started off in an "interesting" way.
3) "Midare Somenishi" (Manga). Not that well know (I think; as far as I know you can only get it scanslated), but it's very well done. Another beautiful series.
All three of these series have moments that make you think. And I like that in a series. ^^

Well, its to do with their intended target. Of course most yaoi shows are targeted at Japanese women and most Jap women are closet cases on yaoi. I know since my Jap teacher (who is a japanese woman) just recently shared her views on the situation. Plus, its not a turn on for them to watch the body parts. Its the lead up to it that's the best part. Angst is better than the act itself I suppose. FYI, I asked her about the anime doujinshi scene and that's how it got to this.
I agree with her completely cause the best parts are the parts before they get together, not after. Angst, angst and more angst. Yum. Okay, I'm going to stop myself here. But I voted for BxB

The only Yuri think I've seen, that's the closest thing to it, is Utena. I haven't read up too many books on the subject, did get a Yuri Lesbian Manga collection book, and it wasn't all that bad, but nothing great.
Yaoi has... Kinda been ruined over here.. Something like the Wet Moon Manga, all the guys are drawn like girls, except they have male parts, doesn't really cut it out. It's very extreme when it comes to the sex scenes, and I'm not sure if they're meant to be girls (their expressions and attitudes remind me of them) or just odd guys...
The only Manga I can actually enjoy reading for being light Yaoi is Eeerie Queerie, which at first I thought was a normal relationship, turns out it guy like guy. And it's done in a very subtle way, that works better than shoving gay sex scenes in your face... Also another one is Alice on Deadlines... surprisingly it looks like a normal relationship, but then there's a lot of gender swapping with souls and bodies, so at the moment I am noticing a Yaoi relationship going on..

@Shoubidokuro (that's how you pronounce yous name, right o.o?) - Good thing you're not my mother XD! But I think if I was mother (which I never will be >_<), I'd be fine with it o_O;;.
Ah it's "Chiibi" but yeah, it's a good thing I'm not. XD Eh!? Really!? You'd let your 13-14 year-old daughter watch two people having explicit sex on screen? O____O;; Something about that just seems....not right at all. If it was just kissing and off-screen sex, okay but not if it shows them actually going at it. >_< There's a reason why hentai is rated 18+.

By the way you say it, you're making me out as a bad person. I never said I'd let my child see explicit sex. It depends on how you raise them. I would raise them in an open home. I'd explain what sex was and not hide anything from them. That way, they wouldn't feel the need to "rebel" and watch sex. That's how I was raised. I'm not saying I'm going to recommend titles to them, I just wouldn't be that pissed if I found out. Age is only a number, and maturity cannot be restricted by age.

Same here man! If your into REAL Yuri action, watch A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila! I love you Tila^^! Man, when Tila gets in those scenes with the other girls, uhhhhhhhh, I just get all excited ^^! Tila is a hot Japanese chick, and noone compares to her! NOTE: still sticking with straight couples, just that it seems more natural! Anyone else here love Tila Tequila? Visit my Myspace and you can clearly see that she is my #1 friend! Anyone else here have a Myspace? Because, I wanan be your friend!

I youtube'd an episode of A Shot at Love. I wasn't impressed honestly, I'm not into reality shows and I really don't like mtv. Tilla is pretty, but not enough to make me wanna watch mtv. If I want to see asian lesbians I am old enough to go down to the porn shop.

Although most of the shows I watched are all guyXgirl, I wouldn't mind or be disturbed if it had yaoi or yuri in it. (Not really into watching explicit sex of any kind though)
Strangely enough, when I read fanfics, I usually like reading guy/guy relationships. And I read a lot of adult type stories, kinda opposite to what I watch.

Excuse me, but I have PLENTY a sense of humor. I just found your post to be REALLY tasteless, rather offensive, and why would you hate all three anyway?I'm sorry. Yes, you have plenty of dry humor. Why would I hate all three? Yuri and yaoi first. Well, most of those are twisting the characters from different anime into stupid fan fics or fan pics. Like one I know is a good example, SasuNaru or Sakura x Ino. That's stupid and against the plot. I have no problem with gay characters. In fact, I wish there were more of them (well, more lesbians anyways). I also don't like straight pairings because there has to be something completely stupid about one of the characters. For example, Inuyasha (well, both Inuyasha and Kagome are dislikeable characters and their relationship has to be "edgy"). Or Naruto and Sakura as a love interest. Sakura is a Sasuke-freak, thus forming a love triangle.
Romances must find some of obscuring something, anything. That's why, as a guy, if I have to chose which to watch, I'd want to watch two girls.

And you probably found it funny because you're a guy, am I right? I would think most guys would find it hilarious, whereas most girls would be disgusted, especially if they're straight and/or Christians. And I happen to be both.:closedeye So Faceless struck a bad chord with me. That is all

Ah.....mm. You may want to try watching other shows with romance in them besides those two. They don't do a really good job, and yes, couples in shounen shows like that can get rather annoying and tiresome. You will see, there doesn't ALWAYS have to be something stupid about one of the characters.^^

I dipped into some "romance" series and I still don't think the relationships are well constructed and there still are extremely annoying flaws with almost every character. Coming to mind right now would be School Rumble, the main protagonist girl (what's her face) is extremely stupid. That's annoying. Most characters can be put into different stereotypical roles: the rebel, the pervert, the klutz, etc. And these roles are exaggerated especially in romance series.

I've noticed that threads lately have erupted into flame wars. Anyways, I have no religion and think that anything goes in a relationship. I'm a guy, and here's my ignorant opinion: Anyhting is okay, just as long as it's not hurting anyone!(No flame wars with me, I have just been through hell and back with about 5 flame wars, and I'm not going through that again!) If I were a mod or admin(you all should be happy I'm not) I'd lock this thread right now for rudeness and flaming! I know it's NOMB, but I'm just stating my opinion on the matter!
I've said it before, I'll say it again, I love Yuri!(another typical guy here! )

Lol yes, Tenma is dumb and has horrible taste in men. Um....that's because School Rumble is a comedy. It's not meant to be romantic. Don't doubt my word until you've tried a lot of titles. I mean a LOT. But you don't have to if it's not your thing. Good romance IS out there-just gotta look for it.^^
