Yugioh is my fav., and I'm an expert.
In short terms:
History lesson:
- In 1996, Takahashi Kazuki created a world famous Manga, this was the origin of Yu-gi-oh!
- In about 2000/01 the very first series, Yami no Games (=Shadow Games) Aired only in Japan, it was only known in RAW and was subbed a few times, but never dubbed into any other language, not even English.
- In about 2002, came the now mostly known and most popular series, which now runs under the name: Yu-gi-oh! Duel Monsters, This is the series we also know in america, dubbed into several languages including English, German, and hungarian.
- About a year after the very first DM episode was aired, the americans came out with a brand new series of 12 episodes, this was Capsule monsters, and was fully american made. From the coloring and the caracter drawing you can see that.
- From 2004 on, the new series of Yugioh, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX - Generation Next is airing, up until now, 140 episodes (episode 140 is airing in these days)
Little more info:
- Yuu - gi: The word itself in Japanese means Game, in the terms of the series, it means the card game itself.
- Ouh: In japanese this word simply means King. When we call a royal person Your Majesty, the Japanese people call him Ouh - Sama.
- Yuu-gi -Ouh = King Of Games (in the popular anime series this is a very honouring title, the world champion of Duel Monsters Card game, a.k.a Yugi, bears the representative title: King of Duel monsters, King of Card games)
- In the Original series, the phraze itself means king of all games, because Yugi's dark Alterego always wins, no matter what game he plays.
Differences between the Yami no Games and the series everyone knows:
Shadow games:
-There only are 27 episodes.
-There is no real card game. The Duel monsters itself exists, but other games have bigger meaning. In some episodes, Yugi plays golf, or mirror puzzle, or even with french cards, or just plays the "Only one finger game".
- In the last 4 episodes of the series, Yugi, and Dark Bakura play a game similar to Dungeon Dice Monsters, and Capsule monsters, but is totally different, and is also mixed with the Kaiba corp. Adventure virtual game.
- There is one caracter more in the series. Nosaka Miho is a cute girl with a very changing temper, and she often cries or just hangs onto Hiroto Honda's/Tristan Taylor's arms, but sometimes she can get mad, and she totally flips out. Otherwise she is a very nice girl.

- Yugi Mutou: Yugi is an average Highschool kid, with problems of height, and self confidence, but good friends surrounding him. He posesses the mystical item, the Millenium puzzle which is told of containing unknown and great powers, and has a secret Alter ego, who was formerly a great Pharaoh of Egypt. He is a genius Duel monsters player, but actually he's not as good as the Pharaoh himself, who is the true king of games.

- Yami Yugi/Pharaoh/Atem/Yuu-Gi-Ouh:
An unbeatable player, with amazing mystical powers, whose past lies in ancient Egypt. Once posesser of the Millenium Puzzle, now helper, and best and closest friend of Yuugi Mutou, and the true King of Games. A Self confident and very strong person, who can win any game from out of nowhere, no matter if it's Duel monsters, Dungeon Dice monsters, Capsule Monsters or any kind of Shadow Game. He can be recognised by his greater height, deeper voice, and the fact that he has more of his blonde hair standing vertically up, and also is seemingly older than Yugi.

Joey Wheeler/Katsuya Jonouchi:
A kid from Domino High School, who bullies on Yugi at first, but after all, they become good friends and hold on until the end. Yugi saves his life several times, and he does the same when possible. He's a good duelist too, but luckier than actually professional, and has a youger sister, Shizuka Jonouchi/Shizuka Kawai/Serenity Wheeler, and for her sake he sneaks aboard the ship to Duelist kingdom, and after losing to Yugi in the final, Yugi gives him the prize money to have Serenity operated just in time to save her sight.

Tea Gardner/Anzu Mazaki:
Having a Huge crush on Yami Yugi/Atem she just sticks around and slowly she becomes very good friends with Yugi too. Yugi has great feelings about her, which Atem shares with him, and not without any purpose. Tea is a handy girl with a good and a better side, a very good friend, a pure souled angel, for whose sake Yugi would do anything, and so would she.

Tristan Taylor/Hiroto Honda:
A strong guy, also bullying around Yugi, and also becomming friends with him. Hard headed, and hot shot just like Joey, but has a big heart for his friends and Joey's sister. He doesn't play Duel monsters, but has some cards, just never shows to play them. He follows Yugi and the others, no matter where their way leads.

Salomon/Sugoroku Mutou:
Yugi's grandfather, once a great archeologist, who found the Millenium puzzle. Once he was a duelist too, and posessed the sacred Exodia the forbidden one, and from an old friend of his, he had a precious Blue Eyes White Dragon. He runs a game shop in Domino City.

- Seto Kaiba:
Former Duel Monsters World Champion and arch rival of Yugi. Doesn't believe in anything magical in the whole world, but has a very strong bond to a rare and powerful card, the Blue eyes white dragon, for which he finds answers in the past. He has a younger brother Mokuba, who he would do anything for, even risk his own life. A very strong willed and hard headed person, not showing any interrest at anyone in personal, but he surely does care about Yugi and his friends on his own and helps them as often and as much as possible, saving Tea, Tristan, and helping Yugi get through problems, not just once. His obsession is to retrive his crown as dueling world champion and beat Yugi in a fair duel to do that.

- Pegasus J. Crawford / Maxemilion Pegazus:
Boss of Dream corporations, the main producer of Duel monster cards and gameware, inventor of the game itself, basing it off of the ancient Shadow games. His obsession was to retrieve the lost soul of his dead wife, and therefore he hosted Duelist kingdom, to collect all possible millenium items and free his wife's soul from the neitherworld. After being beaten by Yugi and having his millenium item (The millenium eye) stolen by Bakura, he disappeared and only returned in the Orichalcos Saga, now as a good guy.

Marik/Malik Ishtar:
Marik and his family are the guards of the Tomb of the pharaoh, but when he gets posession of the Millenium rod, he decides to retrieve all the millenium items and the Three super powerful cards: The Three Egyptian god cards, and rule the world, luckily, he is defeated by Yugi and Atem.

Ishizu/Isis Ishtar:
Marik's sister, The posesser of the millenium necklace, who can see the future, but can not predict it totally (this is proven in her duel against Kaiba in the Pre-finals). She wants to save her brother from the darkness of his dark alter ego.

Odion/Rishid:
He is the loyal servant and friend of Marik, takes good care of him and obbeys his orders no matter what. He raised Marik since he was a child and he carries great responsibilities since then. He succeeds in regaining his master's soul in the final duel, so the evil Marik is gone for ever.

Dartz, King of Atlantis:
Formerly king of the long lost Atlantis, now the leader of Doom organisation, trying to revive the great Leviathan, the wicked god of pure rebirth. Leon von Schröder:
Siegfried's brother and genius young duelist, only beaten by Yugi/Atem in the Grand Championship finals. Siegfried gives him a restricted card and tries to destroy Kaiba corp. systems through him as the card contains a virus, but Atem and Leon succeed in getting rid of both the card and Siegfried.

Yami Bakura:
through the whole series, the greatest evil hides between our heroes. Yami Bakura uses the body of Ryou Bakura to obtain the power of the millenium items, and unleash the great wicked god, Zorck Necrofdius, who is non other than Yami Bakura himself. In the Pharaoh's memory world he succeeds in this mission, but after all, Atem recovers his name, and with that he seals Zorck away for eternity, just like he did 3000/5000 years ago when he died.

The Most powerful cards in Duel monsters, the Egyptian God cards each represent a god of their own, Osiris (Slifer the Sky Dragon), Ra (Winged Dragon of Ra), and Seth (Obelisk the Tormentor).

It is told, that the one ever to collect the five forbidden sealed bodyparts and summon Exodia, wins automatically the duel, no matter what the standing is. This only was possible for Yugi Mutou and only once.
And for the end, a little Japanese language lesson:
I would like to draw your attention to Japanese accent that Japanese can't speak "-er, -d, -t, -p". For example, Japenese says "Card" as "Ca-Do", "Trap" as "Ta-Ra-Pu", "Shocker" as "Shock-Ka". Luckily, people usually speak English terms on card words when they play. It depends whether you understand them or not. ^^
