Indeed, of the rather large cast of Kenshin characters, Yukishiro Enishi has to be my absolute favorite. He's cruel, cunning, an excellent fighter with a style that perfectly rivals Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, and the best part is that he's not some lunatic with no motivations or anything, he's a lunatic with the perfect motivation and reason for doing what he does.

Before the end of the Tokugawa period, Kenshin was a killer for the government. He disappeared during the final battle that led to the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, he saw the error of his ways and wandered Japan as a ronin (masterless samurai) for ten years. Upon meeting Kaoru, his life changes and he begins to settle down and begin to care about people once again.
His school of fighting is the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, which specializes in quick sword strikes that kill instantly. He was given the name "Battosai," which means "master of sheathing a sword," because his attacks were so fast. However, at the end of the Meiji Restoration, Kenshin renounces killing and uses only a sakabatou (reversed-blade sword). He now uses his sword to protect rather than kill.

This... is... very difficult for me. I've been a RuroKen fan for about four years. I have watched the series in it's entirety, watched the movie, bought the OAVs, and collected the manga. I've even read a fan fic or two. When I was 14, you could classify me as "otaku". Anime was life for me. I have since grown out of this, and I don't particularly care for anime anymore. RuroKen is the exception: it will always have a place in my heart, due it it's plot, art, and most importantly, characters.

For me, to choose just one favorite character is hard. Regardless, I will attempt to break it down.

ANIME

It's a toss up between Sano and Hiko. I can relate to Sano, but I learned something from Hiko. I think we all have a bit of Hiko inside of us. Thinking about it, I'm a little more attached to Sano, because I find both the positive and negative aspects of his personality endearing. The Kenshin/Sano shonen-ai subtext inserted at the end of the Katsu plot also earns him some points. ;)

MANGA

My favorite has got to be Saito. I like that he's not a "pretty boy" character; I think he was very well designed. I also love love LOVE his attitude. He's a hilarious character, without trying to be. He's a guy who has his stuff together, and he's not going to put up with your nonsense. He's just about the only guy who can out-insult Sano.

Although Saito is my favorite, I have a lot of love for Yahiko. I think that's he's a close second. I love his character, simply because of all the character development he underwent. He went from bratty pick-pocket to an incredibly strong swordsman. He is the heir to the sakabato, and the man who will surpass Kenshin. I love a character that matures a great deal, but doesn't loose sight of what he believes in.

Then there's Megumi. I feel like she's a character that doesn't get enough love. I see her as a female version of Kenshin: she chooses to spend her life atoning for her past crimes. I also hold a great deal of respect for her: she put the happiness of the one she loved above her own, but helping her rival learn to be strong for him.

OAV (Reflections)

Kaoru. Nothing I can say can do justice to her character in this, so I won't bother.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I really do love all of the main characters (heroes, villians, supporting), because I feel like they were all developed well. The only characters I don't really care for are the minor ones that weren't developed as well. This includes Otowa Hyoko of the Six Comrades, and Kenshin's Ishin Shishi superiors in the Bakumatsu.

Lastly, there is the matter of character interaction. If I chose favorites based on this, I would choose Shishio and Yumi. I love how they are like the Anti-Kenshin and Anti-Tomoe. I like to believe that they are the current king and queen of Hell (in the world of RuroKen, of course). The Shishio/Yumi kiss is my favorite kiss in manga.

Well. Finally a place to rest my love for this story. In answer to the question, Saito and Aoshi are probably my favourites, but the diversity of characters in Rurouni Kenshin is part of why I like it so much. The love story between Kenshin and Kaoru is beautiful, and the playful attitude with the boys is a humorous light that keeps things moving. I like Kenshin a lot, but I would have to say that the OVA's revealation of his character imparticular is what makes me love him all the more. Sojouro was an interesting character, who appealed to me in an interesting way. I suppose the series has a far greater number of favourites of mine than I had thought at first glance. Regardless, my first two names given remain, with Kenshin not far off from view.

My favorite is Soujirou Seta a.k.a Tenken no Soujirou (Heaven's Sword). A Tensai and one of the notable sword fighters pitted against Kenshin... I disagree. It should be Shishio and Shogo; if they were not physically impaired (i.e the temperature limit of Shishio and a shot to Shogo's lower body) they could have wipe his butt language off mother earth^_^
