View Full Version : READ BEFORE YOU POST THESE: Extractions versus Renders - What is Right

Ok ... because of the confusion going on in this forum about what term is right and what term is wrong and people's threads constantly having the argument in them, I felt the need to post this. The great uploads debate -- Extractions versus Renders

Render
1.) to cause to be or become; make
2.) to do; perform
3.) to represent, depict; as in painting

Extraction
1.) to get, pull, or draw out, usually with special effort, skill, or force
2.) a passage taken from a book, article, etc.; excerpt; quotation.
3.) the process of obtaining something from a mixture or compound by chemical or physical or mechanical means

(Definitions derived from Dictionary.com)

-------

And these definitions are what the difference is. You can clearly seen that when people call something they extract a 'render' it really doesn't fit because all they did was cut out the image, which further fits the description of extraction.

So while other sites call them "renders", essentially they are wrong, but that's their website and if they want to be incorrect, then they can be incorrect. But here in AG.net galleries forums, we try to be right ... always. :p

Render and Extraction Examples

Hopefully that clears up some confusion and we don't need to have discussions in these threads about what is right and what is wrong. I just like to see resources! If you have any questions, please don't hesistate to PM me or TheWizzard. Thank you everyone. :D

Also, feel free to discuss this in here, that's what I made it for.

This thread nearly throws my whole Extraction/Render life into utter chaos.

Think of it as reeducation. :D

Well, until now I was kind of confused on the difference. I mean, I knew what an extraction was, but wasn't so sure about a render.

Sorry but I'm new.

Exactly how do I extract a picture from a background?

Why are people so anal on this? Why can't people call it what they want? Every other site, even sites solely for GFX that I go on, call them renders, whats so wrong with calling it a render? It may not be "correct" but it isn't hurting anyone.

Wow..This thread is old!
I remember when Thorn first posted this ^_^

If someone claims to have rendered an image, then a "well informed" listener is likely to conclude that the image in question was created almost, if not completely, from scratch.

If the image question was not thus created, then problems can arise, both for the extractor (who incorrectly termed his work), the original artist, and the third party who now has an incorrect assumption as to the nature of the piece in question.

I still don't understand. I know what an extraction is now, but what exactly is a "RENDER"?

Midnight Rider has already said ^^;;
Render is "create or make"

Here's a sentence:
"Here's a render I made"
That means that the artist has made the image, you may even call every stock images "renders" (but maybe not photographs I think)

Even so now knowing this, I will still call "extractions" "renders". I've always heard them called that, and have always called them that, and will always continue to. It's just how I am. *shrugs* Don't be mad at me...

Too late.
Oh well, can't blame anime GFX people for calling extractions renders.
...
Perhaps.

So you're not supposed to call them renders?

So you're not supposed to call them renders?
Honestly, do whatever.
It's just that according to dictionary definitions, they shouldn't be called renders.

That would only happen here, everwhere else when they say "render" people know they just cut an image out. Theres even sites called planetrenders and gamerenders.

You also forgot Anime Render.
But nonetheless the point is that the terms are incorrect.
If you were to go out in the real world and ask for a render...
You would get stared at, as though you didn't know what you were talking about.
I'd just stick with extractions.
