That's a good question. =3
I'll try to google a little bit, and I'll come back to you with my answer.
Edit:
Alright. I've searched alittle, and it seems like an anime named "Gigantor" was the first mecha anime to be released. This anime appeared in 1963.
The original name is "Tetsujin 28-go", which means "Iron Man No. 28"
You can still buy it on DVD (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/external-search/104-1303617-3706325?mode=dvd&keyword=gigantor&tag=absoluteanime-20) or VHS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/external-search/104-1303617-3706325?mode=vhs&keyword=gigantor&tag=absoluteanime-20) from Amazon.com.
