Perhaps you're thinking of the anime, where Akito was very much like a boy. I think that was because the part in the manga where it is revealed that Akito is a girl was not created yet... So, the animators thought she was a he, just like all of the fans did...until that point.

See my lost post, the attached files, the images! It's a proof that Akito is a girl. You only based your conclusion from the anime & that wouldn't be enough since Fruits Basket isn't over yet in the manga... I suggest you buy & read the manga or search for updated manga scanlations.

Actually, only Shigure, Kureno, Hatori & Ayame knew about Akito's true identity as a girl. They knew it when they're still chirldren while the rest of the Soumas didn't knew anything about it. Tohru knew about it when she met & talk to Kureno.
